I think 'Gold Against The Soul' is very a under-rated album. I suppose it gets lost in the list of 'Generation Terrorists', 'Holy Bible', 'Everything Must Go'...
But any album that includes 'Life Becoming A Landslide', 'Roses In A Hospital', 'La Tristesse Durera' and my personal favourite 'From Despair To Where' is class in my opinion.

Bang on pal, it's my fav' Manics album. I saw them 2 weeks ago in Cardiff, for the 5th time-they are still excellent. I loved Lifeblood also, real class. Once, around 2 years ago, I ended up standing behind Nick, his wife and their baby in a que in Boots the chemist-twas quite a surreal moment for me, he looked, I smiled,he nodded politely, just like any other bloke would have. We didn't speak, I thought it would have been rude to intrude on his day. Plus I was holding a bottle of laxative drink, you don't want to meet your heroes that way. I got the distinct feeling that his wife wasn't as comfortable with the situation as he was, he just seemed like the most ordinary bloke on the planet. Great, great band.
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....

Why has no-one mentioned the new album? It's fantastic. Only problem? It's too short. My drummer got me into them properly about a year ago, they are a fantastic band. I don't know who mentioned it earlier, but James Dean Bradfield's solo album is well worth hearing. It's called The Great Western, and you all have got to find it and buy it! It's my favourite album at the moment, it sits together so well and doesn't have a single weak moment. In fact, I'm going to listen to it now :-D

Really looking forward to the Astoria tomorrow night. They seem to really have their appetite back, so hopefully they'll pull out all the stops back at the venue where they played their last gigs with Richey.

If they could find a spot in the set for Stay Beautiful I'd be very happy... bust out So Dead and I'll explode :-)
If I knew where it was, I would take you there...

Do these guys hate the United States? I know some of their lyrics are really critical of U.S. policies (like Ifwhiteamericatolditstruth...). Have they ever toured the U.S.?

Just wondering if any of you across the pond knew, I have no problem with it, the music's great and that's all that matters.

they didn't/don't like ceratin aspects of american politics and lifestyle. i don't think they dislike americans per-se anymore than they dislike anyone else.

i doubt they will ever be able to tour the states again though - they went to cuba and performed for castro, who famously said they were louder than war!

    Generation Terrorists - 5/10
Gold Against The Soul - 7/10
    Holy Bible - 9/10
    Everything Must Go - 8/10
This Is My Truth - 1/10
    Know Your Enemy - 6/10
    Lifeblood - 7/10
Send Away The Tigers - 8/10.

Been a fan for many a year (since Gold Against..), great band alot of Crap written about Richie but the truth of the matter is he only wrote the lyrics he had nothing do to with the music. Richie and Nicky write the lyrics and James and Sean write the music - The only change is sometimes since 'Know Your Enemy' James write some lyrics. Both he and Nicky released solo albums last year I'd give both 6/10 i think worthy purchases to any fan.

there have been alledged sightings of ritchie all over the world but given the state of mind he was in, i believe that unfortunately he took his own life. i hope i'm wrong though.

whatever happened, i hope he has found peace, wherever he is.

I've always liked the Manics, but I never got into them in a big way. A couple of years ago I saw them at a festival and they absolutely blew me away. Great live band.

I really like them, along with Placebo, I got introduced to their music while in college. Talk about a breath of fresh air!

The Holy Bible is a masterpiece, songs like Die in the Summertime and Of Walking Abortion are classics!

I really wish they can come and tour the states.

They were stupidly good at the Astoria last night. I fell right back in love with them the moment they came on and opened with Stay Beautiful. Great set, great venue, great band.

Generation Terrorists????? other than Motorcycle Emptiness this album I find almost unlistenable. From the gratey tin of the production to the songs themselves I just never got it.
Other than the one song there was no hint as to what was to come with that album,I do agree that Holy Bible is one of the great 90s albums

the production is shite, no arguments there, but I think the songs are great in a naive angsty way. its like public enemy making a guns n roses record, and to me thats quite a good prospect :) I mean seriously, you love us, crucifix kiss, stay beautiful and spectators of suicide are brilliant songs. look past the gloss and leopard print. I hated it at first but it grew on me.

The Holy Bible, however, pisses all over it.

Funny you should mention that about Public Enemy. Apparently the Manics wanted Public Enemy producers the Bomb Squad to work with them early on!

Gold Against The Soul very under-rated in my book.

there is an american remix of the song Repeat on generation terrorists that actually is by the Bomb Squad. there's also a Chuck D quote in the sleeve.

I thought it was just me...the production is bad...but the songs are good.
