Yeah, he has to be the hardest working junkie I've ever even heard of... Does anybody know if he's kind of in and out on the heavy drug use, or pretty much all the time?

Dust is an awesome album. Now to track down Sweet Oblivion or Whiskey from a Ghost.

I know you about as well as I know Jesus, but for some reason I suspect you will love Bubblegum and will prefer it over Whiskey. The production/mix is way better and it has more in the sense of music dynamics and range. Whiskey is a slow burner and I think it might be toooo mellow for certain tastes... at least at first.

Frankly, Bubblegum is one of the best albums I've ever heard. No joke and I've only owned it for 10 days now. Only two songs out of 15 that I'm not super crazy about.

So far as I know he is totally clean. Which is why he's thrown himself into his work so much. Trade of one addiction for another. Thankfully, this is one we can all happily live with.

I'm seeing Mark & Isobel tonight- in a church!!! Can't wait.

That is great news. On both counts. I was under the impression he was still using, but I'm glad I'm wrong. Have fun at church (probably the only time I've ever said this)!

Yeah, I was talking to Shawn Smith about Lanegan several months back. He used to see him wandering about locally in Seattle in a bad, bad way. I doubt Mark would still be without if he hadn't gotten clean. And thanks! I will, for the first time ever!!

Yeah, it was prior to a pub gig over here. It's just someone who'd know. And the new Brad isn't so new. It's been finished for... must be going on two years now. Essentially, it's in Stone's hands. It probably will never see the light of day.

That's it! If I see that pencil-necked geek (Stone), I'm pushing him down on behalf of Brad fans everywhere.

As far as I know he's been clean from heroin for about 11 years, so thank God he's off of it.

Well that does make a lot more sense when admiring his work ethic. It's still such a prominent theme in his lyrics, maybe that's why I figured he was still using at least to some degree.

11 years? Really? I thought the heroin was why he got kicked out of qotsa?

I think he left QOTSA because he found it hard to stay clean when he was on the road with them, not because he was addicted again. Strange as it may seem, it looks like Mark and Greg are the two quietest people on the Gutter Twins bus when they're touring, staying in and watching sports while the others drink and party. I just hope Mark keeps up the trend of hanging with people who keep him healthy.

Maybe you're right. I just remeber when he left there was a Josh Homme interview that said some pretty harsh things about Lanegan. I'll try to find it later. I remember the interview made me think he was back on heroin again.

    Got it.
Eventually,Lanegan and Oliveri became inseparable on the road, bonding over coffee and playing improptu acoustic gig at record stores along the way. Oliveri was booted from Queens in 2004 after excessive partying and the alleged physical abuse of his girlfriend; Lanegan asked to leave the the band's touring lineup the next year, citing "health issues" and need to record another solo album. "He was unhappy with the lifestyle," says Lanegan's ex wife, musician/actress Wendy Rae Fowler, who met him in 1998. "He went into that [spring 2005 tour] clean and sober, and came out of it very not."

Homme is understandably vague when asked about indirectly encouraging Lanegan's self-destructive behavior. "Mark's always struggled with pushing down his bad side because it's big and it's bad," he says. "Shit, it's been hard for me because I never wanted to discover Mark not being on this earth anymore.
Thank god he's like a cockroach and can't be killed.

Looks like you were right, to some extent at least.

    wow... great quote

josh has always struck me as the fratty d-bag type (probably why QOTSA appeals alot to those types - no offense, im a fan too) but that pretty much proves it... take some accountability and do what you can to keep your "friends" clean... its fuckin stupid to sit around waiting for them to O.D.

i would love to see mark play with a band as heavy and dark as queens again though... hopefully he can do it without falling back into bad habits

  • I am going to do a series of shadow boxes featuring Mark Lanegan songs. I am going to have a little recording button with part of the song on the box. the inside is done in the Calavera style (stylized skeletons) so far I have
Wedding Dress (a must for me, with personal reasons)
    Don't Forget Me

aaaaaand I can't seem to narrow down the final one!!

there are too many to choose from!!
I wanted to use Carnival, but I am just as attached to Borracho!!

and then, I was thinking of something from Gutter Twins...I was contemplating...I was In Love With You...

it is hard to narrow it down...any suggestions?

oh, Skeletal History was also a contender, briefly.

Obviously, none of us know all the details, but it is very hard to try to be in a band with a heavy drug user. Especially while on tour. There's probably no way Homme could have stopped two strong willed individuals like Lanegan and Oliviri from making their own decisions. In fact, you wind up playing the douchebag/mom role and that is no fun at all. Especially when you are only trying to help out of legitimate concern.

Not saying Homme can't be a dick though...

I really do think Josh cares about Mark's health - I mean, they've been friends for upwards of 10 years, through Mark's rehabilitation. I don't think Mark would have stuck with Josh if he thought it'd just keep him on heroin. More likely, the kind of crowds QOTSA attract - backstage, in the afterparties, wherever - are more likely to push drugs on you than, say, the kind of crowd Isobel Campbell runs with. ;) And Mark's a grown man, to be fair - it's not Josh's responsibility to keep him clean when they're touring. So, pulling out of the group was probably the best solution, and they seem to have come to that conclusion without Mark going through anything too serious.
