Best of soundgarden?

OnlyLove wrote:First off I want to say that I appreciate all the song listings, I have been a PJ fan for about a year and they have now become my absolutely favorite band of all time. I have recently listened to a couple of temple of the dog songs, and figured I would go out and listen to some soundgarden. Anyways the best soundgarden song I have heard so far, to me, is Burden In My Hand. Soundgarden is a much darker band than PJ, and Burden In My Hand is a much more upbeat song. I believe the intensity and emotion in a song should come from the singer, not music. I feel like a lot of Soundgardens music sets a dark tone. I definately like the band, i just wanted to point out why I still feel PJ is a better band.
Yeah, but if you don't really like a general dark feel to your music, then Soundgarden probably isn't for you. At least Superunknown and Down on the Upside aren't for you... everything before that is more heavy-metal and much less depressing. Badmotorfinger is a good one if you like the more metal sound to it (released around the same time as Ten, I think). But if you don't like the darker sound, then you should probably look elsewhere (but stay the hell away from Alice in Chains). Nirvana or maybe the Screaming Trees, perhaps?
And oh yeah, Burden in My Hand isn't really an upbeat song... listen to the lyrics, man... but good luck with your search. It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win0 -

I only saw one other person mention Searching With My Good Eye Closed. That's always been one of my favorites. It's very psychedelic. Rusty Cage and Fell on Black Days would be close to the top of my list as well.0

Personaly dont think there is such a thing as a bad song by Soundgarden.....thinking ....thinking ....nope:)Can not be arsed with life no more.0

Great lists by everyone, can't go wrong with any of 'em... My personal fave is definitely Like Suicide, followed closely by (in no particular order) Limo Wreck, Room A Thousand Years Wide, Mind Riot, Hands All Over, Loud Love, Jesus Christ Pose (still got a JCP sticker on my work lunch box I've had since about '94 or '95), Holy Water, Fresh Tendrils, 4th of July, Blow Up The Outside World, The Day I Tried To Live, and too goddamn many more to fuckin list at this hour.. And good call on Behind The Wheel that someone mentioned a few posts back.. Hadn't heard that one in awhile, so I jammed it a few minutes ago from my iTunes list.. Definitely some good stuff.. About the only song I can't listen to anymore is fucking Black Hole Sun, only because it's been played about a billion times since March '94, and I'm just fucking sick of it, period.."On the edge of a know-nothin' town, Feelin' quite superior in Den Haag"

07.13.98- Inglewood, CA
10.28.00- San Bernardino, CA

07.23.06- The Gorge0 -
Ok, add Flower to the list too.. Just came on my Soundgarden playlist, hadn't heard it a couple months or so, and this song does indeed kick ass.. Ahh, the early days of grunge.. Still have my old Soundgarden t-shirt my buddy got for me from Lollapolooza '92 (with PJ too), had the SG logo on the front and big-ass middle finger on the back... Got banned from wearing it to work, and from a couple restaurants.. Can't fit into the fucker anymore though, so it's stashed away. My all-time favorite article of clothing.."On the edge of a know-nothin' town, Feelin' quite superior in Den Haag"
11.05.93- Indio, CA
07.13.98- Inglewood, CA

Umm,.....everything
but seriously...if you want to hit a few to get there "bigger" stuff, get the general feel, then dive in:
Spoonman
Black Hole Sun
Burden in my Hand
the day i tried to live
jesus christ pose
bleed together
Don't care what anyone says about mainstream or overplayed or any of that, my favs (though I love em all) are Spoonman and BHSThe only thing I enjoy is having no feelings....being numb rocks!
And I won't make the same mistakes
(Because I know)
Because I know how much time that wastes
(And function)

Oh man.....just finished reading all the posts. I never really saw a list of their shite put together before. Simply AMAZING. I would venture to say one of the most overlooked bands of all time. I wish they were still playing. I know they would have been untouchable by now.
What amazed me is that they never had a weak album. Even their filler was / is sensational. The only thing I enjoy is having no feelings....being numb rocks!

You can't go far wrong with picking up Bad Motor Finger and Superunknown. Bad Motor Finger is a much heavier album and Superunknown is perhaps a little more commercial, so you get a good range of their songs from those two.20/04/06 ~ 23/08/06 ~ 09/09/06
14/09/06, 16/09/06, 17/09/06, 19/09/06, 20/09/06 ~ The Stone lookalike leg of the 2006 tour
