and this is why. If the link doesn't work it's PJ in 1991 at Tower Records. Half of the time, Ed doesn't even need the mic to sing, he is just so powerful. Don't get me wrong, I love Chris and Layne. Chris I fell in love with on Louder than Love. Layne it wasn't until Mad Season that I went back and looked at Alice in Chains and realized what a fool I was for not hearing this earlier. Why are we not including Kurt in this? His voice was amzing too. Fit the music perfectly and you always knew it was him.

In your opinion he is, which is fine. He's not everyone's choice. I do not think he is overrated. In fact the opposite. I think he is underrated. To me he's like John Hiatt. Just someone you knew was him anytime you heard him. I agree with the other poster.....Where did you sleep last night, was just amazing. Listened to that whole disc driving through Kansas driving a thunder storm. Just amazing.

I realize that they all have their own unique qualities and it is literally impossible to separate one as truly the best... with that being said: Who do you think was the best singer in the 90's- Vedder, Cornell, or Stayley- and why?
To make it fair, don't take into account anything that Vedder or Cornell sung on after Layne died.

    I think,

    Jesus Christ

Pose is the proof that Cornell is the best!!! And almost every other Badmotorfinger song, slaves and bulldozers, rusty cage and of course ToTD.

Awesome performance, the power even when he's hitting the highest notes is jaw-dropping. The fact that he can then go and do a Vedder-esque low voice too, is what makes him such a remarkable vocalist in my opinion.

eddie is my favorite voice, musician and everything else, but technically cornell definitely has the best voice. listen to cold bitch by soundgarden. if you can tell me any seattle singer that can pull it off besides cornell i will shit myself.

LMAO...and I agree (tho it pains me a little to agree...since Layne Staley's voice is soooo distinct...sigh.)

  • i don't care.... i liked Scott Weiland's voice better than all these dudes. this dude can change his voice and hit the same notes cornell did. i seriously wish i could sing like this guy... even though he's not from seattle.

In all honesty I like Kurt's voice the best out of them all. Sure he can't hit high notes and isn't great at screaming lyrics, but there's just something so raw about him. I love it. Gives me chills. He had a really soothing voice on songs like All Apologies and On a Plain. Songs like You Know You're Right, Polly, and Something in the Way are so haunting, something only Layne has been able to match.

    It's all subjective anyway.
