If you have tickets for Toronto and / or Chicago you will be the envy of the world!
Holy Shit it is going to be a good road trip!
Here to some shows in the West for them folks out there too
I doubt it will really make much of a difference at all. They've played Letterman many times before and that didn't exactly send their record and ticket sales through the roof. People are blowing this way out of proportion.
1996: Toronto
1998: Barrie
2000: Saratoga Springs
2003: Buffalo, Toronto
2005: Kitchener, London, Hamilton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto
2006: Toronto x2, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Gorge #1
2007: London, Dusseldorf, Vic, Lolla
2008: WPB, Tampa, DC, MSG x2, Hartford, Boston x2, Beacon
2009: Toronto, Chicago x2, Seattle x2, LA #3&4, San Diego, Philly x4
2010: Cleveland, Buffalo, Hartford
2011: Montreal, Toronto x2, Hamilton
2012: Missoula
2013: London, Wrigley, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Hartford, Dallas, OKC
I don't think it will have as big of an impact as the original poster thinks. I think it will have some impact though. With the exception of the first time they we on Letterman (the commercial free one), all of their appearances on Letterman were just regular episodes.
This is the first Tonight Show with a brand new host in 17 years. People are going to watch to check Conan out. All of Conan's fans will watch. People who love Conan but don't usually stay up every night to watch his old show will watch. People will watch to see what Will Ferrell is going to do because he likes to do wild things for special occasions like this. All of us will watch for Pearl Jam.
At a minimum, their appearance on the show will create buzz for the new album outside of their core fan base (i.e. everyone on here).
The performance will probably cause some hype about the band again, but by the time the album comes out people will have forgotten about them again. Unless there's going to be a single released to radio shortly.
PJ is a unique band...always has been...and we have followed and loved them the whole time. But, somewhat due to purposely dropping out of the minstream, the overall "crap" so many are listening to today, and because PJs sound has evolved in a great way, yet not in the "catchy", radio friendly way, I think we have to settle with the idea that they remain one of the greatest live acts and that they are true to their roots and feelings. Most American music fans don't care....despite any top media publicity...many don't and won't "get it"
After Conan people will be saying the same thing they have been saying for 10 years........
"Their first couple albums were good"
or
"they're still together?"
I have been asked that so many times over the last 5-10 years....unsettling, but reality. It seems they aren't "alternative" enough for many, or not minstream enough for others. Probably a good place to be....
I think PJ is more popular than many people here realize, judging from how
well Brother has done and ticket sales for their tours. Album sales has become
a pretty unreliable measure of success in the age of downloading.
And I think they will be getting more out of the Conan performance than a
typical Letterman show. The audience and focus on Monday's show is going
to be huge. How big a bump they get out of it remains to be seen, but I
wouldn't underestimate it.
Tonight show is a bigger deal than Letterman..Tonight show premiere of a new host is an even bigger deal..Pj are about to be 'everybodys' again..get used to it..it's gonna be a big year for them. Biggest since they started probably..

I'm glad you're optimistic. I think back to '06 and think of all the great reviews for "Pearl Jam", interviews, AOL sessions, the big hoopla over full show at Letterman's studio, cover of RS....pretty amazing media and fanfare....the album sales in the end weren't great.
NO WAY they hit the popularity of the 90s...probably not much of a change in overall popularity at all..maybe a small spike.
As mentioned...I don't care and I'll continue to love this band.
Check out the boards for the Tonight Show...PJ is hardly mentioned by posts...not being negative..just looking forward to new PJ and seeing them live this year. Not expecting more than that...my 2 cents based on past new album hype

I agree...It's pretty clear they're music is becoming more accessible and I have a feeling they're new album will be much more radio friendly. They're opening up more and more to the media. This probably will be they're biggest year since the early 90's....but not just because of the tonight show and they obviously won't get as big as they were at that point.

There aren't a whole lot of bands who are more popular in their 40s than they were in their 20s. I can't really think of any.
Maybe Ed will wear guy-liner, and they can be the next Green Day.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get

Exactly. This is the same hype from '06, which was the same hype from '03 which was the same hype from '00. It never results in it becoming 1993 all over again.
Which is cool. Because it sucked having to be lucky as fuck to get tickets to a show.

I thought Avocado would have been the "big comeback album" (comeback used very loosely). It had many radio-friendly, catchy rock songs, and a new energized label J Records behind them.
...did YOU hear ANY of their new stuff on FM? I didn't. But E-Flow was still a frequent occurrence. So... FM doesn't care what's new. And if FM isn't playing them, then light-fans will not know about the new stuff. I'm hoping Conan does for them what they want it to, but we'll see.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

We'll see..agreed. Question....what songs on Avocado did you feel were catchy and radio friendly? I know of some that were played regularly on large market stations, but to really "hit it", we are talking songs that are played regularly on medium and smaller market stations on regular rotation across the US...unlikely today...unless PJ surprises me w/ a pop/rock tune that grabs everyone...beyond us PJ fans
Question....what songs on Avocado did you feel were catchy and radio friendly?
They went for a "message" song as the first single with WWS and I think that was a mistake.
Severed Hand should have been the first single off the album. Just a great hard rocking tune
and I think it would have provided more momentum for subsequent singles.

I have Sirius so don't listen to FM radio but I was with my mom this morning in her car so FM radio..anyway I heard Alive and afterwards the DJ came on and was saying "that was Pearl Jam back when they were good"
My feeling is that Pearl Jam could at any time jump back into the collective conscience of American/World popular music.
Do I think that it will happen?
No.
Do I want it to happen?
Part of me does, cause I love to spread the Jam, and part of me doesn't give a shit. I feel lucky that I'm a part of a cool group of people that appreciate and love that this great band it still going and putting out great music, giving us kick ass live shows, and even churning out cool merchandise. (yeah yeah.... selling out. )
I think just because Pearl jam isn't popular now, it doesn't diminish what they mean to people around the country/world. By that I mean they are one of the "Classic Rock Bands" that will be put relatively high on peoples "Greatest Rock Bands of All time" lists and everyone will own 2, or gasp even 3-5 albums in their digital Rock and Roll collections.
So back to jumping into the popular collective conscience. Well I think they've done it a couple times since Vitalogy was released. With songs off of Yield and of course with 'Last Kiss'.
Yeah it wasn't Ten/Vs all over again, but they were relevant and radio rotatable again.
That has not really happened with the last three albums, but I think the ability to do that at any time, and with a real outside shot at blowing up Big again is there.
Uber talented musicians with Rock and Roll Godlike pedigree, and Brendan O'Brien back in the saddle could produce another flurry of mainstream infatuations.
Being on Conan O'Brien is just one of the pieces that could propel them there.
...People will watch to see what Will Ferrell is going to do because he likes to do wild things for special occasions like this. All of us will watch for Pearl Jam...
Here's a couple of questions that I have for PJ, WF, and the Tonight Show:
1) Does any of the new songs have a cow bell part?
2) Will EV, ehr PJ, have a good sense of humor on the show?
3) Does WF like PJ?
4) Last question, are we going to see WF play some cow bell with PJ?
Side questions, does Christopher Walken like PJ?
"Underneath this smile lies everything - all my hopes, anger, pride and shame."
