Facebook 'friends' is really stupid

Last night I was picking up some take away with a mate, and ran into a girl we went to school with. Now this girl added me as a 'friend' yet I have never spoken with her, and last night I said 'hi' and she doesn't even acknowledge me.

This whole friend business is stupid. It's just a numbers game to people.

I've been waiting for that to happen to me forever....I have a ton of friends on there that I like, but haven't spoken to forever...but I'm not sure if we'd talk at the grocery store, or pretend to be looking for something on the shelf as we passed. It is stupid, but I don't see why I should be ignoring friend requests from people I have nothing against. I sent a few pretty random requests when I first joined, but who cares, really? I don't talk to them, but now I feel stupid removing them....cause....why would I?
I wonder if people would get so riled by fb if they weren't called 'friends', ..maybe people get too caught up in their associations with the word friend, on some slightly sub-conscious level?

    Yeah that annoys me.
Since opening a Facebook account I've had numerous people from primary school and high school adding me yet we never even talked in school.
I just add them then delete straight away.
Also how can you have 500+ friends, yeah right.
I've got like 30 on mine and I don't care.

I just went through my list. I have 177 'friends' Now I can honestly say I have probably only requested to be friends with about 30 of them. I was looking at all my 'friends', and I worked out that of 177, I would probably be happy to have a chat with just over a hundred of them. The other 70 odd I would try and avoid. It not that I hate the 70 odd, its just I couldn't be bothered talking to those people for long.

I also had a guy from America add me who shares the same name as me. I think it is a bit stupid if you ask me. I should just get rid of it.

I completely agree. There are so many people on facebook that I was "friends" with. Some people I knew from high school some I met in passing during college. I would try and talk to them and they would never respond. So eventually I just cleaned out my facebook and went on a mass deleting spree.

I haven't received anything yet either. It maybe because I've had so many user names. Oh Well! Shit Happens, right!!

    Wish you were here...

I wonder how many of those 2332 'friends' will be there for him when he needs them.

About two years ago ... there was this girl at my work, she was pretty young, acted REALLY young. Occasionally fun to hang around with in a bar for laughs, but very catty and pretentious, as if she never left high school. Overall, never someone I'd become friends with if I never worked with them. After a year and a half at this company, she fell out of favor with her superiors in her department, she got bored with her job, slacked off, called into work sick when many of us knew she was just hung over. They pretty much made her life miserable so she would quit on her own.

She blamed management (of which, I was a part of), was really vocal in her last few days, spread rumors, tried souring many staff against management ...and even succeeded in getting another weak willed girl to quit. Good riddance. Again, she quit in mid 2006, never spoke to her again.

So, I just joined facebook last week ... and within a day of me joining, she wants to add me as a friend.

    WTF???

I agree that most users on Facebook have friends they don't really need, but does it really matter?

I have 266 friends on mine. They consist of Friends from growing up, current friends, family, co-workers, and people from the message board.

I may not talk to everyone, but it's still good to have people on there. What if some random PJ friend that I've never met has an extra ticket or needs one? I have my facebook in my sig and people have added me that I've never spoken to or PM'd here. Networking is good, strangers help each other on this board all the time.

Yeh but the point I made in my original post was that the girl totally ignored me. It was like I wasn't there. And she was the one that added me. That is why I was questioning the whole 'friends' thing. Maybe they should have another thing on facebook called 'acquaintances' or 'someone I know but would ignore them if I saw them in public' :?:

An ex-girlfriend who broke my heart many years ago tried to add me as a Facebook friend. I've moved on with my life and I'm hapily married, but why would I invite that memory back into my life?

I can only imagine how flooded with updates and status's the home page of those with so many friends on their list would be. How do you keep up?

usually it's the same 3 or 4 people doing all the updates. i cut loose 2 people and my updates decreased by about 2/3. I don't care if you're hungry!!!

I think there's a way to block certain friends status updates in your news feed. I should look into that myself, certain people dominate the thing...some friends have interesting updates, so I don't want it turned off completely...but ya, the mundane ones are annoying...even worse are the people that broadcast fights with their sig others....that just gets awkward. Lots of slander too. Internet drama at it's finest! :geek:

I've had my heart broken a few times, and I'd be friends with any of them after a few years...once the hurt fades, it's nice to catch up, in most cases.
wait....I'm 2.5 yrs out of my marriage...guess I'd better add my ex-wife and stop bein a hypocrite then, huh? ;) I ignored her a while back. She annoyed me by adding a bunch of my friends, regardless of how well she knew them :D But, to be fair...I added a friend of hers that I didn't know very well, (c'mon, she's a hawaiian tropic model  ), which is what started the battle
ah, that site would have so been the final nail in the coffin for us anyway

I can't believe how vividly you described that...I didn't need to know what you had for lunch that day ;);) :P

You ever think maybe these people only sign on once a month?

I said Hi to a girl who added me, and she responded four months later. I felt the same way you did for a while. :)

I went to HS with a guy who is friends with 2332 people.
I don't think I've ever spoken to that many different people in my life, strangers included. lol.

I have 101 friends on mine, most I cant even keep up with. There's maybe a dozen people I use it for to keep in touch with.
