For some...it's just music..they don't like Ed "preaching" to them and they don't share his feelings on the war or Bush. You know, the "shut up and sing crowd" as i like to call them.(republicans? probably..and no, i'm not a democrat)

others agree with anything Ed says and don't seem to possess a mind of their own...like the people who swing from the 10c sac and act like surrogate mods always quick to point out that your thread belongs elswhere or what you can and can't/should or shouldn't say on the board.

Me? I love the music..and I agree with a lot of things Ed says...That's what got me into them in the first place..i feel we are very like minded on many issues..it stops at Obama..he is a fraud and i can't believe Ed can't see that...

anyway..what do they mean to you..just music? or does it go beyond that?

and how do you feel about the bands/Ed's politics?

I don't mind the politics and stuff in the music itself, but Ed does get kinda long winded with some of the speeches. Especially crappy when there is a curfew ala Boston 2 last year. He gave 2 speeches long enough to take up the time of a couple songs.

I have no problem with the views he chooses to express and in the moment it's cool, especially if you agree with him, but to think back to the Boston show and think they coulda added another song or 2 it's kinda disappointing. I'm much rather hear that than any member of the band talking about anything.

    Way more.

Dont care much for the politics. Love the band. My friends and I have been going to shows since 15 years old in 1991. Would surely not be where I am today had Pearl Jam not been a staple in my travels since.

    Still got the same friends.

Still travel to the shows with them, but now there are even more friends.

    Thanks jams.

now shut the fuck up and play..... :)

I don't mind Eddie being political - very few people in the world are afforded a podium as high up as his, so to speak in favour of political education is fine with me. What bugs me is when he just gets right into his opinions, and voices them as facts. To encourage voting is a good thing. To state repeatedly that Bush is an idiot (though I agree) without mentioning anything more about him is not a good thing.

About what this band means to me? Well, every time I play their music, it cheers me up, and reminds me of the great shows I've seen. And every show I go to, I get excited before it, and it's never a disappointment. Even Toronto '06 night one.

I don't mind listening to his views as long as it doesn't come over a few songs. I don't mind ranting by people at gigs, I have seen it before. I don't like it when artists don't speak to the fans though, even just a small few things here and there, but there's so many bands out there who don't speak out when they should. Green Day made a stance with American Idiot. They played to half-full arenas in the US apparently but gained more fans worldwide due to their apocoliptic stance.

Ed can talk politics for me. As long as he never turns into f**king Bono, what a poor state of affairs that would be.

Why do the band mean so much to me? I associate with their music, Ed is a fantastic vocallist and Jeff, Mike, Stone and Matt are top class musicians. That's the first thing what I like about a band, the voice and the music. Then the lyrics of certain songs hit me, and I can relate to them in a way I can't with other bands.
    :D Rock on!!!! :D
Seen Pearl Jam 4 times in London, once in Manchester, as well as an Eddie show at Hammersmith.

First of all their music, the actual music as well as the words of the lyrics, are the soundtrack to my life. They have grown/matured as I have and always are a perfect fit. Each album always has at least one song on there that perfectly supplies what I need, whether its an angry head-banger (blood), a dark heart-breaker (black), or an inspirational mantra (inside job).

I dont mind the politics, I dont usually agree with their view point, but at least they are aware and have a well-thought out view point. There is nothing shallow about any of them. The thing that bothers me about their politics has more to do with the fans reactions, the "sheep" of the 10c that latch on to ANYTHING Ed says and make it their own, regardless of what it is without looking into it and educating themselves.

One thing about Ed, he always makes you think, whether you agree or disagree. He wants us to open our minds to all possibilities and always no matter what continue to educate ourselves. I am sure he would be more pleased with a well educated, well informed, level-headed conservative, like myself, than a hot-headed, full-of-hot-air liberal that doesnt really know why they are a liberal except because Ed said so.
Sometimes "Majority" just means all of the Fools are in Agreement.

I dont mind the politics at all. Im quite into politics in the UK and the US.

The music does something to me. It levels me out when I need it. Gives me perspective I guess. Its a rock, but dont confuse this with thinking they (the band) are like gods. I dont see them that way at all. Just really love what they do and am thankful the music helps me through

The music, lyrics and social concerns strike a chord in me...they match so many of my own beliefs and feelings. I don't mind the prominent political views, I agree with most of it, and am happy to stand behind a band that has such a defined social stance. I guess Pearl Jam is just part of who I am; they have provided unparalleled enjoyment and promoted my awareness. Thier music carries such an intense feeling of empathy with me, it resonates. They are so real... I feel that they really understand the bigger picture... the message, it takes precedence, it always shines through. They aren't fake, they aren't selfish, they pour every ounce of who they are into thier music. They always seem to be current, offering just the inspiration I need, when I need it. I don't feel THIS way about any other band, and maybe that's because there is really nothing else like them. They have championed thier views even when they weren't popular opinions. They have withstood so much adversity and stuck to what they believe. Honestly.. that's the kind of person I strive to be, and, in part, some of that strength has come from Pearl Jam.

And, in addition to all this...THEY JUST ROCK!! :D

PJ is one fucking giant RELEASE for me..... Their viewpoints, philosphies, attitudes are all so in sync with my own. No matter what they "talk" about, their music and their lyrics vibrate with my being.

I can't go around talking about or explaining a lot of these viewpoints so I have to "express" them through my love for the music. Whether I'm singing along, dancing or just listening, their music always creates positive energy that just comes busting out of me. In my head it's like I'm saying "Fuck YEAH!"

Going to their concerts is like going to a revival for me. Thousands of people singing, dancing, shouting, laughing, crying - this band ilicits the full range of emotion. I don't worship them - but I sure as hell love their music and what it gives me. :D

It's not just that their music has gotten me through tough times, or that I feel so much meaning through their music...it's also because the guys are genuine and believe in standing up for their beliefs and not just being commercial and mainstream idols...The fact they're so socially and politically aware not to mention generous about the causes that mean the most to them -- that's a big part of why I love them so much.

I was seriously considering trying to start having babies this year...
Then realised early this year there'd more than likely be an Aussie tour at the end of the year...
So babies are now on the backburner until 2010! 8-)

the band is proof to me that social construct isn't as powerful as we are led to believe ... that you can do it your way and as long as it comes from the heart - let the chips fall where they may ... that integrity is everything ...

anyone can put a few chords together and sing:

Sorry is the fool who trades his love for hi-rise rent
Seems the more you make equals the loneliness you get
And it's fitting, he's barely living a day he'll soon forget

but it takes ed and the rest of the guys to make it relevant

as for the politics - i fall mostly in line with ed .. i too do not think obama is the saviour although i don't see him much as a fraud as i do someone trapped in a corrupt system ...

Let me first insert a quote here... ;)

“So many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they're busy doing things they think are important. This is because they're chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” -Morrie Schwartz

... this band, the music they make, the things in life they value, everything... - - I couldn't wish for a better teacher. I have learned a lot from them, and will continue to learn and realize more every day because of them. They're unique, special. I'm so thankful that I somehow discovered them and their music back when I did.

...the music just feels so right, and true.. sinks right into my soul.
