I third this... I saw them for the first time last year at lolla! They were great!!
Dave King is really a cool guy... after the show ended, he came into my area and we shook hands. He is really a down to earth guy.
Then he proceeded to meet this kid who was clearly a big fan of his... it was so beautiful to watch - him shaking and trying to breath while talking at the same time! Dave was really cool with him and he recognized him during the show with his enthusiasm and love for the band. Dave personally gave him the setlist and an autograph.
Sorry... umm... what about Cat Power?
I enjoyed her show at Lolla as well...
Flogging Molly is brilliant. I have been a fan of theirs for a good while now, and they're nothing short of great. They tour with the punk circuit and all, but they do great Irish rock music, ala the Pogues or Dubliners. I'm not sure if they would translate well with PJ's crowed in terms of music, but in terms of energy they are on the same level (no bullshit).
Cat Power would be lovely. Her and Ed doing "Good Woman" would bring the house down, in my opinion.

They all are very much down to earth and have a very special connection with their fans. Maybe their music doesn't match that well with PJ, but as an opening band you can't get anyone thats better.
a band i would love to see open for pearl jam, or anybody really would be the deans, i have no doubt that nobody else has heard of them but they are 18, from ireland and the lead singer is as good as rory gallagher on guitar, that was coming form eric bell ( guitarist in thin lizzy) check them out if you have time, they have a my space i suppose just google them
this would be funny as shit list:
Vanilla Ice
Tone Loc
Taco
Spin Doctors
Slaughter
Richard MArx- Him and Ed would totally Duet
Quiet Riot
Men At Work
Master Wong
Kix
Jesus Jones
Huey Lewis and The News
Golden Earring
Flock Of Seagulls
EMF
Duran Duran
Blue Oyster Cult
seriously if they opened I'd Shit list:
Explosions in the Sky
The Crystal Method
Temple Of The Dog
Dax Riggs
Hank Williams III
Cat Power
Saul Williams
Seasick Steve
Drive By Truckers
Flight of the Conchords
Against Me!
Life of Agony
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
Mastodon - The Brendan O'Brien connection, and they're fucking unbelievable
Future of the Left - probably the best punk band of the last 20 years (besides mclusky, but they're practically the same band) and they could really use the exposure. They also welcome heckling (which I'm sure they'll get plenty) but are masters at putting the audience in their place.
Queens of the Stone Age - I saw someone suggest them and I would like to second that. Great band.
Animal Collective - I just saw them and they were amazing live. Some PJ fans would have issues with not having "real" instruments and being a bit noisy. Those fans could use more noise in their lives.
Melvins - Oh man would this be hilarious. The reason I thought of these guys was that Jeff was talking about them a lot in the new Deep magazine. Not only are they an amazing experimental METAL band but they revel in antagonizing the audience. This would be just precious at a Pearl Jam show.

A very good choice. Their new album is great. It's definitely my favorite since Oceanic. I'd love to see how PJ fans would react to some psychedelic-hypno-metal.
Comments
I agree with these but how about The Dead Weather like in SF.
Wolfmother (has a new single)
John Butler Trio
Mastadon
Chickenfoot

I saw Kix open for another group in the 80's. I think it was Ratt.

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Their new album is great and they destroy live ... literally.
El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - This is my left field choice. Basically The Mars Volta with Zach Hill (from Hella) on drums. Nuff said.
