Excellent prequel - I am not a trekkie so, staying true to any specific notion of the original characters is not in my criteria.
Film was well cast - especially Karl Urban as Bones. Story moves along fine and the special effects sequences are fabulous. Similar to Iron-Man and Transformers - take a moderate story, fill it with F/X and bring in a good cast and that's your recipe for box office glory.

This film deviates from the original franchise right from the beginning. A Romulan ship has travelled back through time on a mission of revenge. This ship’s arrival immediately affects the life of an infant James Kirk and all of Starfleet. Nero (Eric Bana) is a tragic villain with misdirected hate. He blames Spock for the destruction of his homeworld, and seeks revenge without any compassion for innocent life. His anger builds for 25 years, and it quickly becomes evident that any attempts at diplomacy will fail miserably.
He begins his revenge with an attack upon the planet Vulcan, and the young crew of the starship Enterprise is thrust into battle. When their captain is captured by Nero, Kirk and a young Spock take command of the vessel and race to stop the Romulans.
This is an action-packed sci-fi adventure with great dialogue. Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Transformers, TV’s Alias & Fringe), created a character-driven film with intense action sequences. Director JJ Abrams (Cloverfield, TV’s Lost, Alias & Fringe), brilliantly realizes the script for the big-screen, making all the battles seem epic, and keeping the characters all grounded in realism.
Star Trek does not pander itself to the technophile audience of its past. It is open to a much wider audience, driven by a strong story and excellent direction. The movie is very well acted, with highlight performances from Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy), Simon Pegg (Scotty) and Chris Pine (Kirk). These actors have captured the essence of the previous iterations of the characters, which fans love, and at the same time have made them their own, and much more accesible.
After my initial viewing, I have rated this movie 9/10 on imdb.com, and have recommended it to everyone who has listened.
I only had one major gripe with Star Trek -- there were no Andorians in sight.
Great review. I won't bother giving one becasue i would re hash what you said only not as well.
They basically rebooted the franchise and left the door wide open for many more adventures to comes.
Can you say Cha Ching? Because that is what hollywood is doing. Can't wait for the next film!

I'm hoping to see it this week sometime, I've heard its really good.
Am I the only one that found it hilarious?
The play on the campiness of the original series is awesome...Kirk's love scene made me lol....at times, esp with Bones, it was like watching a parody, but a respectful, awesome one....
Checkoff made me laugh a few times too...(phasers on stun if I misspelled his name, trekkies)
But yeah.. it was fantastic. Loved it.
But must admit the preview of the movie looks pretty good.
Awesome movie. I cant believe they were able to breathe fresh life into the series and make it really cool. I like the "adjustments" they made with the timeline too. Great justification for moving forward with the story/series.
I have very little familiarity with Star Trek and the movie was very easy to follow and introduces all the characters nicely. The casting for all the actors for each major role were spot on.
I would recommend this movie, and its one you would probably prefer in a theater with the special effex/action.
Everyone in the theater clapped at the end. Why do people do this?
McCoy cured gayness with his magic probiscus.
Cameraderie with other movie-goers, release of pent up tension, expression of enthusiasm at a perceived better quality movie I guess.

Enjoyed it - I am a long term trekker and was so worried whether the film would live up to Gene Roddenberry's original vision of what Star Trek was supposed to be (I saw the man give a talk once, in Houston), and I was pleasantly surprised. I look forward to future installments. I wasn't crazy about casting of Wynona Ryder, but it is a minor detail. I thought the best casting choice was Kirk, and they (and the actor) got his character right.

LOL @ gay issue. I wouldn't worry about this. Star Trek doesn't need to add a gay couple. Every long term, ever attended a *fan run* convention or subsequently ran into other fen on the web, knows this. Watch TOS re-masters and look for it. It's obvious first season. Sorry it's not Chekov and Sulu, though.
There's a great essay on this somewhere on the web. If I find it, I'll post a link.

Tell them you love them. Never let the mundane, the unimportant, or worse, the misunderstood, be the final words of parting.
Tell them.
Maybe the Federation still clings to don't ask, don't tell
I saw this one last night and it kicked ass! So much fun. I know nothing about Star Trek, I vaguely recall seeing one or two of the movies way back in the day, but never watched the tv shows or had any familiarity with the characters. But this one was everything a summer movie should be!

To each there own of course, but these characters are so iconic, people know them who have never watched the show. You can't say that about the other shows.
Fascinating
He's dead Jim
Spock - that's all you need to say.
Beam me up Scotty
I'm a doctor, not a drummer! (Bones said this to Eddie swear to god)
These characters are deeply embedded in our culture.
I agree about Spock in this film. He is totally badass. Quinto's Spock is brilliant.

I swear one line spock contradicts himself about 10 times haha.
HAHAHA
Yes. Imagine growing up with that stuff in your head. I didn't wanna be a girl. Spock said girl's brains were inferior! LOLOL
Ahh, the 60s. Star Trek got a lot of things right. Women wasn't one of them.
But when it comes to race, wow did they ever get that right. Seriously.
