You think the doctor has any responsibilty here? He is prescribing it and HAS to know that there is that danger for manny? I find it hard to beleive that he would/could/should take ANYTHING prior to having it checked out by the mlb or the players association for that matter, whether it be vitamin c or a freaking aspirin!!. I just dont see how this happens. Not sticking up for Manny in any way shape or form, just wondering if the doctor should have some sort knowledge of this shit.

It's the players responsibility to monitor what he's taking and what is in what drug that he puts in his body. These guys make their livings with their body and they know exactly what they are putting in it. All the player has to do is say, "Hey Doc, what's in this?" The doctor only is responsible if he's doing soemthing illegal. If there was a script written out for the drug it's the players fault for not investigating it.

Agree whole heartedly about it being mannys responsibility....I just mean that doesnt commom sense dictate that if you are the Doctor you tell the guy..."Hey...you may want to look into this before taking it! "

What the teams should do is get their doctors to get in contact with every single player's personal doctor via email, phone, etc. The team doctor should communicate with the personal doctors in detail each substance by name what is allowed and what it isn't allowed. Of course, neither team or personal doctors can stop a player if he does one of these substances independently, but they need to be doing this if they're not doing presently doing it.

cheating your way to millions! yay, baseball players suck - used to love the sport, but these last few years have blown it for me. I can hardly watch it anymore.. They should ask for money back from him too, since he's been cheating for awhile.

    Tom Verducci-CNNSI:

"The source said the substance was not classified as a steroid but was clearly defined as a banned performance enhancer according to the drug agreement between baseball and its players association. Banned substances can only be taken with prior knowledge and medical clearance from baseball's drug-program administrators. Such exceptions are known as Therapeutic Use Exemptions, or TUEs. The suspension is an indication Ramirez did not have a TUE for the substance."

I'm willing to believe Verducci's sources rather than speculation.

I'm with you on that. I'm a Manny fan, so this is probably my final straw with the game.

ESPN should be talking about how fucking awesome the Rockets-Lakers game or Rondo's triple double last night but instead it's about drug use in major league baseball, AGAIN.

And even as a Celtics fan, I have to admit I have much more love for Kobe Bryant than the entire major league baseball rosters. At this point, they're all cheaters, liars and 'roid users to me.

I totally agree, but like I posted before to Speedy. Manny is goofy and as we have learned never checked out the medication. That's why I could never see him taking steroids because you have to be really regimented on them.

The drug that showed up is generally used by roid'ers when they come off a steroid cycle to help the body start producing testosterone on its own again.

What was found, just in the early parts of the study, was quite enlightening. Nolvadex, used for 10 days at a dosage of 20mg daily, increased serum testosterone levels to 142% of baseline, which was on par with the effect of 150mg of Clomid daily for the same duration (the testosterone increase was slightly, but not significantly, better for Clomid). We must remember though that this is the effect of three 50mg tablets of Clomid.

I enjoy all the "baseball players are frauds" comments. If people put themselves in their places for 10 minutes most would make the same choice all these guys did.

Let's see, I can go natural and make $1.5 million a year or take the juice for a couple years and then sign a multi-year, guarenteed contract, worth 10's of millions of dollars. It's pretty simple.

A lot of guys on rosters (players 20-25) will take it to stay in the bigs and make better pay instead of riding the buses in the minors.

If it really was a legit medicine or mistake, I would guess the the MLBPA would at least try to challenge it.

Yeah... with all of the attention to performance enhancing drugs, you would think as a baseball player, you'd ask the doc what it was, and then just take 5 minutes to call a union rep to see if you are clear...

I actually like Manny, but he is either really careless, or doing something shady... either way, it's his fault.

Well, it looks more like a mistake because of a faulty medication than steroids, but unfortunately his name will be grouped with everyone else now:

The commissioner's office didn't announce the specific violation by Ramirez, but in a statement Thursday provided by Major League Baseball, Ramirez attributed the violation to medication he had been prescribed by a doctor.

"Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was OK to give me," Ramirez said. "Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now.

"I do want to say one other thing; I've taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons. I want to apologize to [Dodgers owner Frank] McCourt, Mrs. McCourt, [manager Joe] Torre, my teammates, the Dodger organization, and to the Dodger fans. LA is a special place to me and I know everybody is disappointed. So am I. I'm sorry about this whole situation."

After consultation with the Players' Association and his personal representatives, Ramirez waived his right to challenge the suspension. He will lose about one-third of his $25 million salary.

Yeah right, if it was not steroids he would have appealed the suspension.

There are many reasons that statement is moronic.
