Nevermind or In Utero? Which is better?

    Musically, In Utero.

It's hard to judge Nevermind without its social and historical contexts, and for that reason I always find Nevermind to be the better album. If that makes sense. Considering it during the time it was made, I find it to be unbelievable and spine chilling.

I've always found the review on Amazon to perfectly describe Nevermind: "If Nevermind's sound is familiar now, it's only because thousands of rock records that followed it were trying very hard to cop its style. It tears out of the speakers like a cannonball ... magnifying and distilling the wounded rage of 15 years of the rock underground into a single impassioned roar ... The record's historical weight can make it hard to hear now with fresh ears, but the monumental urgency of Kurt Cobain's screams is still shocking."

    So very, very true.

Depends on my mood. Nevermind is FAR more significant, and I reach for it more.

    Unplugged's my favourite, however.

Both albums are terrific, but I still think "Nevermind" is better. Two of the best songs on the album "Drain You" and "Breed" would have been hit singles if released as such.

"Nevermind" is an album kind of like "Ten" that has some slick production that Kurt Cobain didn't really like. A "Nevermind Redux" disc would be fantastic to give us a chance to hear the album the way Kurt would have preferred. For the moment, we only have the few "rough mixes" from "With The Lights Out."

    ^ ^ agree.
Breed is mental, get's me rocking out 8-)
Saw an ad on tv here promoting one of those guitar hero games and they used Breed in the ad.
Drain you is so powerful, love that section where it goes quiet then it blasts out again, magic.
Lithium is up there on my list!

i go with In Utero - though, like most others, played the shit out of Nevermind - but nowadays, my choice is In Utero.

Have you guys heard the original "Albini Mix" from the orig master tape? I finally got around to getting the mispressed vinyl that has it, and it sounds awesome- some songs are different sounding. Very impressed and surprised at the same time that the record label isn't trying to capitalize on it by pressing more (on purpose this time) Does anyone else know more about the mix on the vinyl?
  • In Utero or Bleach. I dont listen to Nevermind much anymore.

It's a raw transfer of Albini's master tape with different mixes of "Heart Shaped Box" and "All Apologies". The other songs have less processing and more power. It's a great slab of vinyl, but pretty hard to find at this point.

  • Nevermind needs the albini treatment. Re-master for the 20th anniversary? Unplugged will forever be my favorite though. It has been such an interesting road I have traveled with this band. I got into them when Kurt died. I was in 6th grade living in the middle of nowhere Missouri no Internet. It took the mans death for my young mind to realize what I missed out on. Changed my life. I hope this made sense. Typing on my iPhone while drinking

    In Utero
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.

in utero, if only because it has some of the best 'sounding' drums of any album ever released by any band. ever. (in my opinion)

I've always prefered In Utero to Nevermind. The first six songs on Nevermind are great and I like On A Plain as well....but I could leave the rest.

I loved Nevermind when it first came out but I gotta go with In Utero. It is to Nirvana what Vitalogy is to Pearl Jam.
I smile, but who am I kidding...
  • Nevermind blew my mind when I first saw SMTS for the first time on MuchMusic. It quite literally changed my life and gave me the "YES! This is what I've been waiting for!!". I was a metal fan all my life, but after Nirvana hit me like a ton of bricks, I got rid of most of my metal shit (except Metallica). It had the sound I dug (except for the soloing noodlers), but the comical imagery was dumb to me. So Nevermind will always hold a special place in my heart.

That being said, the opening line of IU; "teenage angst has paid off well", alone, makes me like it better. It's raw. It's unproduced. It's a bigger budget version of Bleach.

If it was to come down to songs? Breed, no contest.

  • Nevermind is more of a singles album while In Utero is just brilliant throughout and far more cohesive.
  • I really can't decide, I like them both, but I'll have to go with Nevermind...

Kurt put a lot of emotion in every song he sang...

    Wish you were here...

  • of the two, i would take In Utero. but i love incesticide

    exactly! Dive, Blew, Aneurysm....

of the 2 in the OP i'd say In Utero easily. Nevermind still has some great songs on it and probably has more harmony but i like In Utero a lot more musically.

I used to have cdr of Kurt's version of the album, Geffen remixed and changed the track order....

what are you but my reflection? who am i to judge or strike you down?

i was thinkin 'death before dishonor'
