Nevermind or In Utero? Which is better?

Tough decision.
There are no skip tracks in both albums, I'd say Nevermind because of its impact!
I found In Utero on vinyl at a record store, might get it!

I used to really love Nevermind but it sounds really dated now, it really hasn't aged well at all. I listened to it a few months ago for the first time in years and I was really disappointed, I didn't even make it halfway through. It just sounds like a collection of over-produced pop singles now :(

If you're looking for a 'complete' album then In Utero is far better than Nevermind.

In Utero sounds better and is better crafted but lacks that raw power Nevermind has!
It is a hard one for me to judge.

    In Utero.

Although, my favourite Nirvana song is on Nevermind... Teen Spirit

I jest... Drain You is actually my favourite. Teen Spirit gets skipped every time...
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

I think Kurt and the band would probably say In Utero because it was more angry, more brash, more crazy sounding.

For me, though Nevermind is just a perfect album. From the opening Teen Spirit to the sad ending of Something in the Way, its all there.

Kurt had an incredible sense of harmony and melody and that shown through in Nevermind

There is a reason this album consistently is placed on "top albums of all time" lists, and placed near the top of such lists.

I think I like Nevermind more of the two mentioned. Although "in Utero" contains one of the best Nirvana songs ever: "Radio, friendly, unit, shifter."

On a personal note though I honestly think "Bleach" is my most favorite- loved the raw punkish influenced sound on that album on songs like "Negative creep" and "school" ect, but "Incesticide" is a pretty amazing album too. I think I may be more partial to these two honestly.

I really have mixed feelings about their unplugged. The vibe and the performances are spectacular, but the best songs aren't even Nirvana tunes.

Toughie man, i just listened to all the nirvana albums yesterday, think i enjoyed In Utero more. Apart from the hits Nevermind is weak, but In Utero seems to be consistantly better.

In Utero wins. More nuances, more challenging, more diverse, and more fucked up.

in other words: it does all the things i like about Nirvana better than Nevermind. Bleach is 2nd place for me. Individually, i love all the songs on Nevermind, but i cant listen to the album for all the above reasons, i duno exactly. What I do know for sure is that live boots of nevermind songs piss all over the recorded versions.

    So yeah, In Utero wins.

    In Utero.

    Nevermind is more significant however.

I'd have to go with Nevermind, honestly. In Utero sounds overly angsty; almost forced to me. And the production on In Utero grates on my nerves after a while, too.
    Thanks EPOTTSIII!

Depends what your mood is at the time... That said, I love Incesticide
  • I enjoy both albums immensely, but I have to go with In Utero out of personal preference. Nevermind has a very slick production sound to it where as In Utero has a more raw/live sound to it. I remember seeing Iggy Pop on VH1 classics describing good rock music as "Elephants walking through room" and that is the only way I can describe Dave's drums on In Utero. I know a lot of that has to do with how Albini records drums, but I really love the drums sound on that album.

In Utero largely consists of outtakes from the Nevermind period and I think it shows. Someone said it's "forced". I think that's a good description. It's got some weak tunes and the vibe is a bummer. I thought that in '93 and I still do. Comparing it to Nevermind is like comparing "Let It Be Naked" to "Sgt. Pepper".

i like the sound of In Utero but prefer the songcraft of Nevermind... the production of it is shit though.

but as for Teen Spirit... i dont skip it... its a great song... its one of those stupid Kurt things.. why write a song that fucking good and then get annoyed about playing it? oh woe is me... the poor artist syndrome...

as for Kurt disciples not liking Courtney Love either... i dont get that... i would have shagged her back then as well... she looked really dirty.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

I'm going to get pounded for this, but I mean nothing by it.

It's cooler to say In Utero is better, and it is a great album. However, we all know when it comes down to it, if you had never heard any of their albums ever before, Nevermind would be the clear winner.
