Well it's a new strain of flu and to make a vaccine and stockpile it takes months, so maybe they just have a stockpile of red smarties?

just going by the BBC website which reads

"We have established a stockpile of enough anti-virals to treat more than 33m people, that is to say half of the UK population," he said.

    Interesting.
The seasonal (or a seasonal) vaccine is the for the same type of flu, but it is my understanding that this is a new type, therefore the existing H1N1 vaccine is more or less useless.
The article does mention Relenza - that and Tamiflu are two prescription drugs that some reports are saying are helpful in some way, so who knows.

I go to Shippensburg University in South Central, PA and we received an email that two students were being tested who attend the University for swine flu. I'm sure its just hysteria, but still kind of scary.

Israeli official: Swine flu name offensive

    Associated Press - April 27, 2009 10:53 AM ET

JERUSALEM (AP) - An Israeli health official doesn't like the name swine flu and wants it changed to "Mexican" in deference to Jewish and Muslim sensitivities about pork.

Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman tells a news conference the reference to pigs is offensive to both religions.

Both Judaism and Islam consider pigs unclean and forbid the eating of pork products.

Scientists, however, say there is nothing about the virus that makes it "Mexican" and worry such a label would be stigmatizing. They're unsure where the new swine flu virus originally emerged, though it was identified first in the United States.

Two Israelis who recently visited Mexico have been hospitalized with symptoms of the flu. Health authorities have not yet confirmed whether they actually have the virus.

  • Meh.

    Not worried.

I know that all the tinfoil hat people are saying that this is Obama starting his martial law thing... or killing undesirables... it's the Taliban attacking us...

But no.. it's just another epidemic and yes.. some people will die. But I lived through two outbreaks of SARS in Toronto and I'm sure I'll live through this now that I live in LA.

The "regular" flu kills up to 30,000 people a year worldwide. When this flu kills that many in less than a year I will be worried.

But the regular flu only kills a very small amount of the people who get it. I mean sure 30,000 people die but that is out of probably tens of millions of people who catch the flu every year. I am not sure what the stats are for Swine flu with respect to what percentage of people who get it actually recover (anyone know).

With so many billions of people around the world, we all have to die from something.

    It's a slow news week.

This happened with a small Bubonic Plague outbreak in 1995 in India.. people panicked until a bigger story came along.

    and it will again.

this isn't anything to worry about at all.
