I think even the people that complain about Even Flow being played too much would love it if it opened a show! No one ever expects it!
I was at the Pittsburgh show where they opened with Even Flow. HUGE disapointment! You know you are going to hear Even Flow sometime in the set, so why waste the opener with it? The opener is the BEST part of the show. There are a few songs that you have 1 chance of hearing, and if they don't open with it, you don't hear it. You get your hopes up for Oceans or Sometimes.... and you get Even Flow. The only thing worse would be Last Kiss.
Out of 34 shows, I have only been to 1 show that did not have even flow. That was the Boston 3 Experiment!
I was at this show! My first PJ show. For months leading up, we debated what the opener was going to be. I said Corduroy. Then, they come out and start Act of Love ... and it's like WTF. I had Mirror Ball, so it was like, "this song sounds familiar" but I couldn't quite place it. Not until the lyrics started.
It's kind of weird that the first PJ song I ever heard live wasn't 100 percent a PJ song.
This was also my first PJ show. 30,000 people, general admission at South Park Meadows in Austin. I didn't have Mirror Ball at the time, so I didn't know the song. I thought maybe it was a new song. Looking back, though, it wasn't that strange, because many times, especially in general admisson crowds, PJ starts the show with a more sedate song to let the crowd settle down a bit before they really start rocking. Radiohead and the Ramones opened this show, and after the Ramones set, I pushed my way through the crowd and got close to the stage, and when Pearl Jam came out and started playing "Act of Love", the crowd was not too out of control, so I figured I could handle it, but the second song was "Go" and INSTANTLY the crowd turned into a giant mosh pit with people flying through the air with their combat boots on. It took me two more songs to make my way back out of the pit, and I sat on the hill outside the moshpit to witness the rest of the show. AND IT WAS HOT that day!!
Cropduster is their best opener ever, it rocks and was one of two songs (ghost and cd) i was hoping to hear in 2003, i was not dissapointed and had just the right accompanyment handy both times I heard it
I belive in Cleveland 2003 they opened with Can't Keep, what a crap opener, what a crap song.

Don't have Columbia, FEEL FREE TO SEND ME IT THOUGH.
Just listened to Cleveland again. Still sucks the life out of you.

That was a great day. And hot as fuck. One thing though: Ramones were the only opener that day. Radiohead played the next day, opening for REM -- which is part of the reason the PJ show started early, so they'd have time to clean up and set up for Stipe and the boys.
I went to the REM show, too, but it paled in comparison to the show I had seen the day before.
It's also funny you mention "Go." About 30 seconds into Act of Love, I found myself pinned, facing backwards. Couldn't move. So I thought, "This sucks. I'm going to miss the entire show if I stay down here." So during Act, I start trying to make my way out of the pit area. I don't get very far.
Then, the first chords of Go. I say "fuck it" and immediately slam into the people next to me. I stayed down front for about 8 or 9 songs, all the way through Evenflow. Then I just had to get out. Enjoyed the rest of the show from the hill, with the sun setting behind the stage.
Good times. Too bad Southpark Meadows is a strip mall now.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
I was at Pittsburgh 2000 when they opened with Evenflow and it was astonishing. You know that surreal feeling you get when they first walk out on stage, that they are actually there, right in front of you? That feeling was magnified x1000 when they ripped into Evenflow, and as the song went on, everyone was just stunned. Great experience.
I was also at Cleveland 2003 - Can't Keep works as a great opener, in my opinion, because of the way the momentum builds in the music. I was at Pittsburgh the next night, and opening with Small Town was strange. It felt a little out of place, cause I normally feel like the crowd is warmed up and ready to be sentimental for that song by the time it's played.
In Cleveland 2006, I have to admit I was a little disappointed with Betterman for an opener. It was kind of cool, especially how Ed let us sing the whole first verse and then delayed his opening vocal for a long time before he came in for the first time. But I was excited to hear some new Avocado material, and I was worried that Betterman signalled that we were going to get a boring setlist. Man, was I wrong.
I belive in Cleveland 2003 they opened with Can't Keep, what a crap opener, what a crap song.
what!? craziness! that's one of my favorite songs. definitely top 12. it's so atmospheric. it was AMAZING opening in hartford this year. i prefered it over hard to imagine and wash. it was that good!

Very Cool! Yes, you are right and I was getting confused because both PJ and REM palyed back-to-back nights. Now that I think back, it was pretty cool to see the Ramones, PJ, Radiohead and REM in one weekend.

I was at the Lexington show with Cropduster as the opener. Show was amazing. Not disappointing at all. Got Glorified G. great version of I Am a Patriot, Smile, Fuckin' Up to just name a few. Very energetic show. Checked out the audience during 1/2 Full with mirror and spotlight.
they opened up a show in australia with porch in 2006. that would be pretty cool...id like to see life wasted as an opener. thats a in your face powerful rocker. one of my favorite album openers.
They opened with this at Sydney 3 2006! I really wanted to post it because it is such an awesome version, somebody has already mentioned that it may well be the best version out there!
..and actually i know i listed betterman as unexpected but done a few times .. still, that one just sounds weird. how is it as an opener?
I saw them open with that in Sydney 18/11/06. Best opener I have seen from them and also the best betterman I have ever seen/heard. He even speaks through it which is odd cause Ed normally doesn't speak until about 5 songs through.
