We actually live about 20 minutes from Longwood Gardens- it's not too far off 95 if that's how you are travelling and it's lovely. My favorite part is the conservatory - the smell is amazing. (It's where I go when the snow is deep to remind us of the spring to come!) Also, quite close to LG is Winterthur (old DuPont estate) which also has lovely gardens, koi pond and a fantastic children's garden, complete with faerie and gnome homes and a mushroom circle that mists when you walk in. I guess they are about 1 hour from Baltimore- we are about 1.5 door to door.
Regarding the aquarium, if you order online you get a ticket confirm number and when you arrive at the aquarium they have little kiosks where you can print your tickets by providing the credit card you used and the confirm number. I believe you can pick any time of day to go and reserve your spot for that entry (we chose 9am as we have a 2 year old and he is raring to go at 7am) so you can easily choose to go at 11 and pick a dolphin show time as well. They've really got it together over there.
I think we are going to try and hit the Fells point area and meander the boutiques and perhaps one of the galleries mentioned here. We are all for a good glass of wine so perhaps we'll find a good spot to enjoy one prior to the show!
thanks for the info!
i was looking ahead at the weather, looks like there may be a few showers on monday and thunderstorms on tuesday....not great for walking around the city, nor gardens. i was initially thinking of the aquarium for sunday, like to leave monday wide open for ed that evening, more spur of the moment stuff. hmmm. may just stick with that plan. you go in thinking, wtf can i do with my time...then you see.....wow.....how can i fit in everything! :P we'll see how much we enjoy baltimore and go from there. figured we have 2 solid days within the city, and then half day saturday, and tuesday plan on leaving....hitting up longwood gardens, or the winery, or idk. haha. i am pretty sure i've been to winterthur before, tho a million years ago.
while in baltimore sure to spend the bulk of our time in the inner harbor area.....but depending how the weather is and all, love to meander everywhere! if you know of a good spot for wine before the show, do post, we're up for it too!
Well work is getting in the way of my Baltimore searching today, but thus far I've found two restaurants that peak my wine interest and that my hubba hubbsie could be into...

hmmmm....that brewer's art place looks very interesting!
btw - do you know where the lyric opera house is even located? hahaha. i know i can google it, just askin'. is it walkable from the inner harbor area? we're staying at a sheraton about 2-3 blocks from inner harbor...so would love to park the car when we arrive and not start it up again until we're ready to leave. can always take a cab or public transport - if it exists? - of course....but i far prefer walking whenever possible.
definitely plan on having some nice meals and drinks the whole 4 days......
edit - ok i googled it......hmmmm...doesn't look to be too walkable. :( bummer. doesn't look too far tho either, so that's good. nice. inner harbor, little italy and fells point....all look to be enjoyable/walkable/fun!
I need to look into the cab/public transport myself- I think we are staying at a sheraton too but for some reason I thought it was walking distance (under 1.5 miles)...We are the same way about parking and walking (though now I have my instincts on since reading about the questionable areas)

yea...i think we may simply end up cabbing it if we can't walk. i just wonder, are there many cabs avaiable AFTER the show, especially since supposedly we're not supposed to even bring cell phones that have cameras! (idk of any cellphone nowadays that doesn't have a camera!) 1.5 miles would be fine, especially preshow....as long as it isn't too hot/humid, and we didn't drink too much .....tho i am concerned about aftershow, especially for the reason you mention.
Hey D2D, John and I will be in Balitmore on Sat. and Sunday too! And staying at the Sheraton Sat. night! (only, drving back Sunday after the show - ugh!) I know I had read awhile back you were going to the Monday show, but we are only going to the Sunday show and heading back to 'boken afterwards because both of us have to work Monday.
We'll have to meet up at some point. We are going to the O's game Sat. night (sorry, big baseball fans) and probably the Aquarium on Sunday, but a college friend and her family are coming into town for that, so I don't know our timing yet.
Lyric Opera House isn't really within walking distance of the Sheraton/Inner Harbor, since you have to walk through a somewhat dicey area to get there. And not sure about the taxi situation post-show. Since we are hitting the road post-show, we are just going to drive. You may be able to take the Light Rail there.

BTW- do you know where the "rules" are regarding the cell phones... I get the whole respect thing but I also have to have my phone so that my sitters can reach us. I couldn't imagine that they wouldn't let us have them in our pockets for such things, right?!
I'll give the lyric a ring and post what I find out- perhaps a local will read and post via experience. I hear ya about walking after the show- I think we were in Montreal and totally misjudged the number of blocks to our hotel- needless to say we were whipped after touring all day/preshow/almost 3 hour show and the trek back to the hotel... we vowed not to make that "whoops" again ;0

cool!
i believe tony will be in town for both shows as well. we definitely should all get together at some point. would be great.
thanks for the info re - the lyric.
we're not staying at the sheraton inner harbor - but another within i think 3 blocks of it. i know there were 2, very close to each other, why idk...but ours was less expensive, and thereya go. :P i guess we could drive...but liked the idea of not driving in case we are drinking before/after. who am i kidding...in case? hahaha. b/c we ARE drinking.
i do have your cell #, so unless you changed it....i'm set. i think you have mine as well, but i'll PM it just in case too. we will more than likely be hitting up the aquarium sunday too...so definitely at some point, food, drinks, whatever.......
embrace - it's not lyric's policy, it's the 10c/ed solo show policy. i too am hoping they will allow the cell phones, even with cameras....b/c i too just feel safer having a phone on me, especially somewhere unfamiliar. i just know i read it somewhere about these shows, saying no cameras, including camera phones...and thinking...wtf? idk of a phone without one nowadays!
D2D- No luck with a live person at the Lyric, but the map shows it in a place near hotels and bars (within 3 blocks) so I imagine that cabs won't be too difficult- It might call for a bar detour (stop and have a drink while waiting for the cab) I did stumble across some policies listed for the Lyric and it seems in line with the EV policies- No cameras or recording devices allowed. I can't imagine that the security wouldn't allow people to carry their cell phones or have them on their person (like you said idk if a phone exists these days without the cameras) but I think they do reserve the right to kick you out for inappropriate behavior. That would make the most sense right?!
It's going to be a great time! Hear's hoping those rain showers hold off. Cheers!

well i figure from the hotel, ask about a cab and perhaps get a phone # to call and request a cab after the fact...so yea....may have to hit a bar afterwards, but that's ok. idk what kinda city baltimore really is...but i hope their bar stay open at least until midnight, even on a monday night.
and i too am hoping they'll allow the cell phones in.....it's only a stern warning NOT to break it out and take pics! i promise i won't! *crosses heart*
yea....overall the weather looks gorgeous for the weekend, chance of showers monday....and the real worry is thunderstorms tuesday. that would ruin any garden/winery explorations....and not fun to make the return trek to NY either. so definitely hoping it waits a bit at least. temps are meant to be around low 80s...that's fine with me!

jenn....we're not at the same sheraton. i looked up the addy of ours, you are definitely closer to inner harbor, tho we are close too....just not as close. do share where you got your deal, b/c i thought i scored quite a deal, and really, comes out to be about the same as yours and you got the closer/better sheraton. just curious...
Great outlook! I am so excited! We have the 2 Philly shows then cap it with Baltimore We're staying at a Sheraton nearer the venue a few blocks from inner harbour- I get the impression that its okay to walk around there in evening. Also saw the posts from the past few nights that cell phones are all right- :0

oooooooooo...jealous!
3 solo shows, lucky you!
i think one solo show will more than suffice for mr. dream, and our collective wallet ....thus no baltimore 1.....and none of the other shows work for me work-wise.
and YES....on given to fly there is a thread about it, someone specifically mentioning the phones were ok, good news indeed.
also, i would guess that inner harbor probably being the most touristy spot in baltimore should be a-ok. you're probably staying at the same sheraton as me then, perhaps? fayette street i think it is on? or hell, there were a couple of sheratons listed for baltimore, hahaha. i went with the one that seemingly offered the best rate, yet still close to inner harbor.
I'm a bit obssessive eh ?! We almost gave up the BMore tickets since we were able to get tickets for here at home, but decided it would be a nice getaway and we're sharing the experience tomorrow night some friends we've not seen in a long time. (I love spreading the love Hope Ed doesn't get sick of seeing us (!)
We ARE on Fayette. We got a good deal as well and I've been building points with Starwood since work has me travelling so much. The inner harbour was listed higher and we were hoping to see a different area since we spent some time down there about a month ago...so it's just working out nicely. I think it says IH is 3 blocks and the venue is about 7-8...

Jeez, I don't know where I got that orignal address from, we are at the Fayette St. Sheraton, I think that's the only Sheraton downtown. I got the $99 rate directly from Sheraton over a month ago when EV tickets went on sale. I think you can still get that rate from hotels.com, but as you said, it works out the same for the lower rate you are getting Sun. and Mon. We are only staying the one night, so i was happy with $99 for a Sat. night. Slight change of plan for us through, there was a death in John's family, so we probably won't get there until later on Sat. (maybe not until Sunday).
Embrace - As for walking around at night, it's fine down near the Inner Harbor, probably past the hotel all the way up to the Mount Vernon area. But past that, to get to where the Lyric is, is not a good area. So i wouldm't recommend walking to the Lyric from the Inner Harbor.
I was at the Albany show last night, so I am excited for the Baltimore show! Cell phone were fine and no one was respecting the "no pictures" request.

oh alrighty - we ARE staying at the same one!
i feel better....b/c i thought you were at the inner harbor sheraton, and for that price.... ...i was like wow! b/c THAT sheraton was about 2x the price! i got my rate right around when i got my 10c tix too.....and i too got it direct thru sheraton. weird. as i said, i had that 'deal' as a starwood preferred guest member, so works out about the same over the course of 3 nights.....but whatever. haha. looks like there's a few of us staying there.
and last night's show looked awesome setlist wise - lucky you!
and, truly sorry to read about a death in the family :(.....wish john and his family the best.

eh, obsessive? nah. of course, i say this as someone who's 'top year' for pj had me at 8 shows? :P haha.
yea, i love building the points! first joined their starwood group when i booked a room in bologna, to end my pj tour there....treated myself, all by myself, to a nice hotel to end my 5 show italian tour...after spending 10 days traveling with 4 friends, and sure, staying at not the best places/cramped quarters, etc. so since then, i always try and go sheraton to build points...figure eventually it will add up to at least 1-2 free nights, somewhere, some trip, coupled with our airmiles to travel...so some fantastic trip for me and hubby. i don;t travel for work, only pleasure....so it definitely is taking me longer.
i did a mapquest from the hotel to the venue and i think it was just under 2 miles? however, from all that jen mentions, i think simply we'll cab it. head to dinner first, do our thing, than hop in a cab...can't be too pricey, and just be sure to get a # to call for the return trip to the hotel, no worries.
Thanks so much for the clarify... I would have been "lalalahing" on my way to the show and next thing you know in the worng place at the wrong time! On the map it looked like you could walk right up Charles Street- so much better to have input from someone who know's what's up!
The setlist last night looked great! YAY for you (fist pump). How many EV solos are you attending?

If you want lots of little shops I recommend heading to fells point, there are little shops, I believe a small art gallery, the vinyl store is there, and plenty of food and bars. It's also pretty. Problem is you are staying about a 30 min walk away from fells point, so it depends if you're up for a lot of walking.
As far as walking from your hotel to the lyric.. Well the walk to the Lyric will be fine, north charles has tons of shops as well and bars/food. It's a nice walk. However.. you probably don't want to walk around at night after the show. If you are with a group you should be fine, but walking alone you might feel a little uneasy, though North Charles is a relatively busy street.Unfortunately Baltimore is not the most walkable city, so getting around between fells point and Mount Vernon can be a pain in the butt.
I plan on staying around the lyric after the show to see if I can catch eddie on his way out, if you plan on doing the same I can give you a lift to your hotel, this goes for whoever needs a ride on sunday.
also, the OP mentions/recommends the brewer's art as well....i am thinking it is a must on the agenda.

I don't want to deter you guys from walking if you really want to, but only about half of the walk will be cute shops and restaurants, the latter half (after the Mount Vernon area), not so good. Probably fine if you are in a group and it's still light out, but not a nice walk.
I'm going (went) to two shows this tour, Albany 2 and Baltimore 1, that's good enough for me. Last year I went to 3, NYC 1 and 2 and Newark.

i for one appreciate the advice, and yea...we'll cab it.
i went to one last year, and only one this year - good enough for me!
only 'sadness' for me is this will more than likely be the year i end my 'streak'....of seeing live pj every year since my first show in 2003. :( bummer. at least i have live ed tho.....and hopefully live pj in the spring!
Great thread, nice info, thanks
Question if you happen to know, how is the walk from say Brewers Art to the Lyric? Curious if was considered "not so nice"
thx much

I've had enough, said enough, felt enough. I'm fine, still in it.
So the Brewer's Art is looking like a good spot- It's also mentioned on the Lyric's site but no clue about the sketchy walking deal...edit- so I read Brewer's Art is in Mount Vernon and going off JennFar's tip above, prob not the greatest walk.

actually, according to what jenn has posted above, mount vernon IS a good place to walk....just AFTER mount vernon, heading north to the lyric, sketchy. i am thinking we may have dinner there night of the show since it's on the way up there....then cab it from there to the venue.
that wine market place definitely looks interesting...and yea....definitely out of the way. going to see what's around, more local, inner harbor, little italy, what have you, for our other meals....see what shakes out. but i'll definitely keep this place in mind too! only have 3 nights of dinners....but hey...one needs lunch too.....;)
1.5 more days and then i'm on vacation! baltimore...saturday!
*edit - embrace, IF pj announces moe shows and miracullusly any are close to home and i can manage it work-wise.....i AM there! thing of it is, it looks unlikely that they will play any east coast shows, and if they are before september 15th, out of the question work-wise. i would love to travel west to see em, but for once :P i really need to be prudent. so we'll see what gets announced, but i am mentally preparing myself for no live pj this year. :(

This is probably sound like on flip-flipping, but If you are going to dinner in Mount Vernon, and it's early enough (light out), it's probably fine to walk the rest of the way to the Lyric. Especially if the Lyric is recommending the restaurant on their site. I lived down there a long time ago, and while I've driven down that street/stayed in the area a number of times recently, maybe it has improved some? But I wouln't walk back after the show.

now the weather forcast is agsain looking crappy for most of saturday, monday and tuesday....:( sunday looks to be really nice tho. i hope whatever rain - if it must come - is quick, so that we all can fully enjoy baltimore.

D2D- got you completely on being prudent. We are not set to attend any PJ shows thus far BUT are hoping for a few announcements soon. I have budgeted IF the Philly Spectrum show comes to light and I will travel for a Seattle show (and ideally Vancouver) as I'd like to spend some time out there. Good to mentally prepare for no PJ because if it works out, its even sweeter! How far is Philly from where you are?
YAY for vacation for you ! Wishing you and your man a fun time and good weather!

yea, sometimes have to act like a grown-up. damnnit.
i would loooooooovvvvvveeeeeee to head out to seattle! i went out there in 2005 for the gorge, and then hit up vancouver, calgary and edmonton. i do have airmiles....and i have friends out there so possibly a sofa to surf, maybe.....but even so, concert tix, eating/drinking, whatever else...it all adds up...and no way could hubby get off work. and truly, 90% of my pj travels have been solo/with friends...but i do feel guilty. and sure...we do need to be prudent....so yea...dunno. haha. philly is certainly doable. while it is 'possible' to go there and come back the same day - yikes! - i'd not do it. i do have some friends down there....joe, you hear me? ....so who knows. IF pj makes their way there, i'll make it happen, somehow. northeast is always doable, somehow. 1-2 nights, especially if i can drive and crash at friends...definitely feasible. but flying somewhere...i am just not one to *waste* airmiles to fly somewhere for 2 days....i'd want to stay a few, make it worth the travel, the time, and the funds/miles, etc. bottomline...we shall see. nevr, know, i could win the lottery before then.
and thanks!
*fingers crossed* that the weather is good! i don't need it too warm, in fact i prefer low-mid 70s.....i just don't want rain. oh, and i truly hope the evil kinevil poster is what is for sale baltimore 2.....b/c that's the one i want.

thanks for the info!
i was looking ahead at the weather, looks like there may be a few showers on monday and thunderstorms on tuesday....not great for walking around the city, nor gardens. i was initially thinking of the aquarium for sunday, like to leave monday wide open for ed that evening, more spur of the moment stuff. hmmm. may just stick with that plan. you go in thinking, wtf can i do with my time...then you see.....wow.....how can i fit in everything! :P we'll see how much we enjoy baltimore and go from there. figured we have 2 solid days within the city, and then half day saturday, and tuesday plan on leaving....hitting up longwood gardens, or the winery, or idk. haha. i am pretty sure i've been to winterthur before, tho a million years ago.
while in baltimore sure to spend the bulk of our time in the inner harbor area.....but depending how the weather is and all, love to meander everywhere! if you know of a good spot for wine before the show, do post, we're up for it too!

hmmmm....that brewer's art place looks very interesting!
btw - do you know where the lyric opera house is even located? hahaha. i know i can google it, just askin'. is it walkable from the inner harbor area? we're staying at a sheraton about 2-3 blocks from inner harbor...so would love to park the car when we arrive and not start it up again until we're ready to leave. can always take a cab or public transport - if it exists? - of course....but i far prefer walking whenever possible.
definitely plan on having some nice meals and drinks the whole 4 days......
edit - ok i googled it......hmmmm...doesn't look to be too walkable. :( bummer. doesn't look too far tho either, so that's good. nice. inner harbor, little italy and fells point....all look to be enjoyable/walkable/fun!

yea...i think we may simply end up cabbing it if we can't walk. i just wonder, are there many cabs avaiable AFTER the show, especially since supposedly we're not supposed to even bring cell phones that have cameras! (idk of any cellphone nowadays that doesn't have a camera!) 1.5 miles would be fine, especially preshow....as long as it isn't too hot/humid, and we didn't drink too much
anyone know the area around the lyric?

We'll have to meet up at some point. We are going to the O's game Sat. night (sorry, big baseball fans) and probably the Aquarium on Sunday, but a college friend and her family are coming into town for that, so I don't know our timing yet.
Lyric Opera House isn't really within walking distance of the Sheraton/Inner Harbor, since you have to walk through a somewhat dicey area to get there. And not sure about the taxi situation post-show. Since we are hitting the road post-show, we are just going to drive. You may be able to take the Light Rail there.

:P i guess we could drive...but liked the idea of not driving in case we are drinking before/after. who am i kidding...in case? hahaha. b/c we ARE drinking.
i do have your cell #, so unless you changed it....i'm set. i think you have mine as well, but i'll PM it just in case too. we will more than likely be hitting up the aquarium sunday too...so definitely at some point, food, drinks, whatever.......
embrace - it's not lyric's policy, it's the 10c/ed solo show policy. i too am hoping they will allow the cell phones, even with cameras....b/c i too just feel safer having a phone on me, especially somewhere unfamiliar. i just know i read it somewhere about these shows, saying no cameras, including camera phones...and thinking...wtf? idk of a phone without one nowadays!

well i figure from the hotel, ask about a cab and perhaps get a phone # to call and request a cab after the fact...so yea....may have to hit a bar afterwards, but that's ok. idk what kinda city baltimore really is...but i hope their bar stay open at least until midnight, even on a monday night.
and i too am hoping they'll allow the cell phones in.....it's only a stern warning NOT to break it out and take pics! i promise i won't!
yea....overall the weather looks gorgeous for the weekend, chance of showers monday....and the real worry is thunderstorms tuesday. that would ruin any garden/winery explorations....and not fun to make the return trek to NY either. so definitely hoping it waits a bit at least. temps are meant to be around low 80s...that's fine with me!

jenn....we're not at the same sheraton. i looked up the addy of ours, you are definitely closer to inner harbor, tho we are close too....just not as close. do share where you got your deal, b/c i thought i scored quite a deal, and really, comes out to be about the same as yours and you got the closer/better sheraton. just curious...

oooooooooo...jealous!
3 solo shows, lucky you!
i think one solo show will more than suffice for mr. dream, and our collective wallet
and YES....on given to fly there is a thread about it, someone specifically mentioning the phones were ok, good news indeed.
also, i would guess that inner harbor probably being the most touristy spot in baltimore should be a-ok. you're probably staying at the same sheraton as me then, perhaps? fayette street i think it is on? or hell, there were a couple of sheratons listed for baltimore, hahaha. i went with the one that seemingly offered the best rate, yet still close to inner harbor.
Let's just breathe...
