Glad it was my last issue. Could anyone explain to me how Axl Rose, Kurt Cobain, Donny Hathaway, Eric Burdon, Christina Aguliera, BJORK!!!!!, AND Thom Yorke make the top 100 singers list and Eddie Vedder doesn't.

How does he not break the top 100!!! I didn't expect to see him in the top 25 but he has to be somewhere on the list.

    uh oh....PJ police...run!!! ;)
  • Rolling Stone is run by a gay 60 year old very powerful man in the music industry who knows very little about actual music, other than how to accept favors. Not sexual favors (that I know of) but he is really from the old school.

PJ is not the kind of band that this man would understand. Nor the little lackeys around him.
Please! He put John Cougar Mellencamp in the Rock Hall this year- does THAT guy really deserve it? Um..no.

And for the holier than thou people on here who say "check before you start another thread" cram it. It's a message board, not a board meeting.

Well I'm pretty sure at this point, Rolling Stone has a clear understanding of Eddie's feelings about them. Oh sure, "Artisit and other contributors voted", sure sure. But Eddie wiped his ass with rolling stone in concert, and that's been all around for years now.

this is the price one pays for wiping their ass with a mainstream music magazine :D

which i think is great.. fuck rolling stone and their lists....

The fact that Aretha Franklin was the number one singer instantly made me disregard their whole voting process and the opinions of those who voted. Is she a great singer? Definitely! But, number one? No way! You look at who voted and the singers voted in and you can see the flaws. Whole genres were pretty much overlooked, including the doo-wop era where there were a ton of amazing vocalists. Along with Vedder, I don't recall seeing Frank Sinatra. Come on, the impact he had on music was way greater than most of those included on that list.
    PJ:
    2003 Mansfield: July 2
    2004 Boston: Sept 28 & 29
    2005 Montreal: Sept 15
    2006 Boston: May 24 & 25
    2008 Hartford: June 27, Mansfield: June 28,
    2010 Boston: May 17
    2013 Worcester: Oct 15, Hartford: Oct 25,
2016 Hampton: April 18, Raleigh: April 20 (cancelled), Columbia: April 21. Quebec: May 5. Boston (Fenway): August 7

fucking Ray Charles 2nd?!! no fucking way!! he sang like shit!! and while i adore John Lennon...he wasn't the greatest vocally.

Sarah Brightman would/could blow Aretha away..even when she was in her prime!

Rolling Stone sent ballots out to other musicians and singers, the list is on page 70 of the issue. So Eddie Vedder didn't make the list, is that really a big deal??? The voters were asked to list their 20 favorite singers and this is what they come up with, Rolling Stone only provided the ballot.

  • WTF?!

Mind you, it doesn't really surprise me... The top 10 - A nice safe list of voices that we, as the music buying public are 'supposed' to appreciate  More like 'told' to appreciate if we want to be seen as 'musically educated'

I'm not saying that anyone is is bad but there are sooooo many predictable names on that list! Granted, there are some surprises but to list Mariah Carey over Annie Lennox?! Cobain over Daltrey and Morrison?! Cat Stevens - Anyone?! Why oh why is Thom Yorke and Axl Rose listed but not even a sniff of Patton, Stipe or Vedder?! People like Grace Slick are mentioned (in the Patti Smith section) but not listed! And TWO beatles in the top 15?!

    Insanity... *shakes head in disappointment*
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
  • What number is 50 Cent?

    #30?

  • fucking Ray Charles 2nd?!! no fucking way!! he sang like shit!!

I've been coming to this board for many, many years. I think this takes the top spot as THE most ignorant post of ALL TIME.
  • Who Cares!!!!
    Tour with fucking NOFX
  • Who Cares!!!!
pretty much. rolling stone has been irrelevant for years.
  • This thread is hilarious. All of your poor panties are wrapped up in bunches. Oh no! Someone didn't kiss pearl jam's ass!! The funniest thing is...it was voted on by Eddie's peers....NOT the magazine you all hate for some reason. Obviously other singers don't hold Eddie in as high regard as we do here and that is understandable. I have several friends who can't stand his voice. Literally hate it. My one friend said she would love Pearl Jam if he wasn't singing. I disagree with her but I respect her opinion and could see how his voice might not be everybody's cup of tea.

    Just chill out people.

anybody actually READ the bit about dylan? i think the point here is that he changed the world of popular singing...not that his voice is sweet to everyone...

i've read a lot of shit-talking on dylan around here and it's kind of ridiculous...

In regards to Dylan, I think The Stranger said it best with his famous line "Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there." That's Dylan in a nutshell.
