i thought it would be fun to collect some vintage cards.......

purchase them on ebay....

and maybe place some of them in a frame and give it to my father.....he is a huge fan of ernie banks and billy williams......

i thought it would be fun.....

then i found out that baseball card dealers (on ebay) are nothing but a bunch of lying thieving pieces of human garbage.....

when all is said and done i will probably be kicked off of ebay....hehehehehe

there is one dealer here who i would like to remove his spleen and staple it to his fucking elbow....

it is my own fault.....

what did i expect from a bunch of Adults who play with baseball cards and make a living selling baseball cards??

actually they make a living off of ripping off 12 year old kids....

My boss was seeking a Bill Nicholson card for her father as a present for Christmas and ran into the same issue. The dealer was a complete jackass to her.

My son's baseball coach gives out cards as rewards for making plays during the games. I always thought that was kind of cool.

Yeah, I would never pay for an autograph. If I happen to get one on my own at a signing or running into to someone or whatever, fine. But you won't catch me in a sports collectable shop shelling out cash for an autograph.

Doesn't it mean more if you actually meet the person and have them sign something? Anyone can just buy one.

I don't know if it will work for those older players but if you are looking for autographs Speedy this is what I tried in the early 90s. I sent out 10 cards to different teams asking for autographs. I got 2 back(Barry Foster and Brett Favre) and an 8 x 10 from Jerry Rice. These ebay assholes have taken all the fun out of collecting though.

any item of *value* with a secondary market.....supply and demand....profits to be made.....there will always be charlatans, those just in it for $$$. i believe there are quite a few people who majorly supplement their income selling anything and everything on ebay, and hey....whatever works right? buyer beware and all that. i do really like ebay and paypal tho, lots of safeguards in place to protect both buyers and sellers, tho of course no system is perfect. i've had a lot of successful experiences with both and my husband has bought/sold a plethora of basses and other related items. it IS amazing tho, it seems everything is sold on ebay nowadays.......

When I was like 14 or so, I was really into collecting cards... There was this small card shop by us where the guy was nice and would help us out finding cards, etc...A friend and I went to a couple of card shows and that basically turned us off of the whole thing... those dealers are scumbags most of the time.

And buying autographs is a joke... even the ones that aren't fake. I worked for a few years where the Pittsburgh Penguins practiced... You'd see the same homely lowlifes everyday with their boxes of 8x10's waiting in line every day after practice for autographs.

I have no problem with kids asking for autographs, or maybe even an adult getting one from a BIG name athlete, but the freakin' grownups who chase every random player around need smacked.

man---my whole childhood allowance & grass-cutting money went to baseball cards!! we would ride our bike to the cardshops. it'll be cool to pass the cards along my my kids someday, though.

i was in Target the other day & browsed the baseball cards. it's crazy---now they have all of these subsets with bat/jersey fragments & holograms and they are seriously overpriced. plus, you only get about 6-8 cards in ONE pack!! that's nuts!

Yeah.. I remember my childhood days in the early 80's going to the store and buying packs of Topps for like $0.50 or whatever they were... (and loving the rock hard stale gum). I had this little index card file thing with dividers for each team, so I'd rush home and sort my cards and hoping I didn't have too many doubles.

Like you said now, there are so many brands and sets that it's probably tough to even try to start a collection for a kid... and their so expensive.

I am quite familiar with pricing and the baseball card industry as a whole.....i used to be BIG in to collecting cards(30 years ago)

and Beckett is a bunch of horseshit too...IMO

Beckett can claim a card is worth $200.....but if nobody on the planet is willing to give you no more than $35....

then how much is the card truly worth???? $35.....right????

there was one really great card shop close to where we lived. the brothers that owned it just loved sports. jon & i could go in there & talk baseball for hours. they never overpriced anything and were really fair if we wanted to trade with them.

then there was another shop & they were dirty as hell. they would pressure you into buying this & that. the 2 shops were polar opposites. one for fun & one for greed.

I was a big collector when I was younger..it was so simple back then...Topps was the only game in town.

Once i got a bit older and had some dough to waste, I'd gamble on the pricey wax-packs...80-81 Topps Basketball (to get the coveted Bird/Magic Johnson/J Irving trio card) and the 86 Fleer Basketball (many valuable rookies). As I recall, one pack sold for around $25!
