What exactly are the medium-sized venues between theatres/concert halls/performing arts centers and basketball arenas/amphitheatres?
I would think it's tough for Wilco to graduate to the next size of venues without facing a few thousand empty seats every night.

I hear you, for most of the country at least. I was just frustrated by my inability to get a ticket for the shubert show. I mean that was the tri-state gig for them and it was a ridiculously tough ticket
But they did sell out two nights at Radio City on the ghost tour, and almost sold out on NYE at MSG

Why compare Nels to Mike? Nels is an accomplished jazz and avant-garde guitarist. Mike is a rock/blues lead player. To say Nels is kicking Mike's ass right now is, i don't even know. Pointless.
To use Wilco to bash PJ is completely ridiculous.

Tix won't go on sale the instant the news is announced anyway. As an alternative, you can keep checking your email too. Don't get too serious about it. After all, its probably news of a tour.
