Retail jobs....

    the job itself is mindless... which right now is fine with me, but what I can't understand is... why does it take 7 grown people to put together an 8 foot section according to the plan-o-gram??!! It's a damn picture that you follow... a 5 year old could do it! I could put it together by myself in an hour... But nooooo I'm to new to understand the complicated stuff. Damn it I've done retail for 10 years and I'm not a moron!

I'm sorry, I'm on my lunch break and had to vent.

Hahaha, Plan-o-grams. Where do you work if you don't mind me asking? I used to work at Target and couldn't imagine how that would take so long to set up. I work now at a store called Menards [midwest version of home depot or lowes] and Plan-o-grams are a bit tougher.

I just find this post hilarious since I swear i'm the only person who knows what a Plan-o-gram is sometimes or how to read the damn paper, as you put it. :)

I can read a planogram, but I couldn't put one together if my life depended on it. Not that it's hard, but i'm terrible at building things.

I work at a beauty supply... It's all bottles and brushes. All they have to do is move the shelves around. Oh and I forgot to mention this IS their job, setting plan-o-grams  they go from store to store resetting them!

My favorite is when the plan-o-gram doesn't work right!!

At least at Target the way it works is that its a computer program that you put the sizes and dimensions of the products into and then it computes where stuff needs to go.

It doesn't always work out the right way though.

Haha, I love it when you are putting a shelf up and you later notice you made the left side 8 high while the right was only 7 high.....gah! haha.

Also, seeing your quote thorns, why the hell is that smiley guys code 'mrgreen'? lol.....

I'm not sure, I've often wondered that myself!

Maybe the mods think this is the smiley for greed?? And you know money is green!

i'm so glad that my company doesn't use plan-o-grams!! all of our product placement is set more by business analysis and staying true to the vision of the floorset, as well as what works for our store/customer. i love to merchandise tables and fixtures! i find it to be fun...as far as work fun goes :)

In this day and age Retail Jobs+retail Stores+New Retail Store Designs=More Retail Design Work which in turn = more I.T. work fixing/building/maintanance.......which right now is hitting bottom.

Trickle down works but not in a good way for me

    Great outlook! :)

Hey, and on the bright side...enjoy the position that has minimal responsibility right now until you move on to something else with more responsibility and you find out people work for you that can't even follow a plan-o-gram.

It's amazing to me how poorly some people do easy jobs though. I was at a store buying something yesterday and the check-out girl was reading a newspaper. A man came up to her to ask her where to find something and she didn't even take her nose out of the paper to answer she just grunted and pointed. It was so dis-connected! Then when she checked me out she actually had to put the paper down and she still had the hardest time looking in my face or anything!!

I left the store thinking...she probably thinks the job is beneath her (she's so busy projecting boredom!) but she was DOING IT BADLY!! People who know how to be good check-out people actually talk and smile and interact with live people.

It made me think even the easiest jobs DON'T just do themselves.

  • I hate planograms. I m a lead sales assoc.at a major sporting goods chain and it's absolutely ridiculous how much shit we have to change on a monthly basis. It's even worse when your under staffed and the people who work for you have to get a kick in the ass every 5 min. we have these fixtures called knee walls and it's a wall about 4ft x25ft and I had to change it 3 times in one week b/c the guys in our corp office couldn't make up their freakin minds.I thought I was going to loose it. However though Im thankful I have a job right now.

Here's one for you they consider anything over 35 hrs full time but don't pay over time (time1/2 ) unless you work over 40. WTF!!!! :x

alota stores just train checkout girls to be just that. so they really don't know where things are.she probably didn't think it was beneath her at all. would you wanna know what people lives are like and eating habits and everything else and stand there and try to act all happy for 8 hours a day making nothing. i worked at target for 2 months and it wasnt worth working 2 days a week for 8 bucks an hour. i was amazed when i asked other coworkers why i was only getting 2 days and they said oh everyone gets 2 days and that some people were there for 2 years and still only got 2 days. i worked the 2 worst days sundays and saturdays. i was in the beauty supply/bath section but it was fun having hot middle age girls ask me if we had a certain brand of tampons. i did cash register alot and it was boring most of the times. but i made the best of it by conversing with the customers when the checkout lanes werent so busy.oh and cash register was alot harder then working the floor. i'd never do retail again. the things ya do for people/love sometimes oh well
