Absolutely loved their previous Album 'the Crane Wife' and just "burroughed" their new Album of the Net until it gets officially released and the Label lets me finally buy it! I'm pretty psyched after listening to it for the first time. Anyone of you people into the Decemberists :?: :!:

I'm a casual fan. I've got a few of their albums and like them all okay, but so far Crane Wife is the only one that I'm crazy about.

I've preordered the new one on vinyl and looking forward to hearing it. If I'm not mistaken the one track I've heard was very good.

I got my first listen last night. If they were going for epic on Crane Wife, they're over the top on this one. I think I'm going to like it, but it'll need some time to digest. And, of course, hear the vinyl.
  • This album is amazing. It flows perfectly, it's epic, the music is fantastically layered, unpredictable, and diverse...Colin sounds amazing. I wasn't huuuuge on The Crane Wife, I much preferred Picaresque, but this album blew me away...so great, I can't even say enough good things..."Won't Want for Love" gives me chills..."Margaret's" voice is beautiful

It is the epitome of a concept album, with repeating musical themes, movements and the like...Definitely needs to be listened to front to back the first few times...

As an additional perk, listening to the album is certain to boost your SAT verbal score ;)

Apart from the epic (& amazing!) title track that spreads all over the record, I have strong feelings for: 'Isn't It a Lovely Night' & 'The Rake's Song' which for me are stand-out tracks! :P

I'm going to be out of the country for the next 3 weeks, so I'm going to have to wait until I get home to hear it. But these reviews are pretty exciting!

let me assure you that you won't be disapointed once you'll get to hear this one!
  • without the printed lyrics I am having trouble following the story.

That said this album is pretty outrageous, in a good way.

They certainly put time into putting together a cohesive and comprehensive story to this thing.

The heavy metalism ROCKING out moments are definitely odd for the decemberists. As is the childrens choir.

Should be a hell of a tour they are putting on soon!

actually, while it's not what one might expect from the decemberists, they have rocked out before in a number of tracks (ie- The Tain, Odalisque, When the War Came, etc.). That being said...it's still fun to hear them rocking out as much as they do on this album.

I do think that there are parts that really rock, but it isn't "heavy metal" either. It's still within listenable boundaries and if you want to build up some momentum soundwise you have to raise the volume at some point. ;)

I'm pretty sure this Album will make them "the next big hype" on this board. It's just to damn good to be ignored! :D

This album is great. It gets a little repetitive towards the end, but it is definitely my favorite album of the year so far. The variations of music styles were really surprising.

Amazing amazing amazing. This band contunies to amaze me with each albu, Colin's ability to push himself, to aim for the bigger and better. Colin's strengths are apparant here, the beautiful storytelling, the imaginative lyrics, the killer melodies. Just a flat-out masterpiece.

If you like the female backing vocals on this album ... one thing I would suggest picking up, My Brightest Diamond.

Shara Wardon is amazing, I'm glad she's going on tour with the band (as posted on the MBD website).

This is from a show I was at when they opened for The Decemberists in 2007 ... watch it to the end ... jaw dropping good ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iKkN9FrgEA

I don't know much about Lavendar Diamond (the band the other female vocalist comes from) ... but they too have toured with The Decemberists in the past.

I've met Becky Stark... from Lavendar Diamond. She's pretty trippy... kinda geeky and odd... but, you love her. She also plays solo shows around L.A. and sometimes sings with Inara George and Eleni Mandell as the 'Living Sisters'. Becky has a great sense of humor and is pretty damn smart. Her songs are kinda out there.. but, I like them. Completely anti-pop. She's promised to introduce me to Jenny Lewis.
She and Shara Worden should make these Decemberists live shows pretty great.
