Pearl Jam or Ed would never sell a song to a bank that is fucking their customers over left and right. There is nothing wrong with getting paid for your work but I believe there are companies that people with ethics and standards avoid. Billy has shown with this move he has no standards.
you mean to say viacom(the parent company of into the wild) cares about its customers.....
or what about verzion??? handing over phone records, without warrant, to the fbi sounds like a very classy move. or that text messages cost next to nothing for cell phone providers but they still gouge their customers. so charging someone a over the top flat rate is ethical while using percentage isnt?
oh i forgot vedder cant sell out cause we can always point to someone else. as far as i can tell pj has no standards, if we use your standard of selling out.
Man you are rilled up! It's like someone pulled out their cock and bitch slapped your mom in the face with it. You and Billy must be real tight. That's cool though.
Having sponsors for a tour to help pay the costs and selling a single song to be identified to a specific product is two completely different things. I think your deep love for Billy is stopping you from thinking rationally here. Step back and think.
Nothing wrong with getting paid. There IS something wrong selling yourself (in this case one's voice) to promote a shitty product. Especially when you talked shit about doing it in the first place. LOL!
A) it's not a person selling himself, its a song, that's all it is, a song he may be in support of VISA, not everyone finds it to be a "shitty" product.
C) the phrase "at this point in time" is pretty notable in his quote.
So if Billy Corgan were a vegetarian and he personally came on set of a commercial and said "I'm Billy Corgan, you should all buy hamburgers because they are yummy." Then he would be a sell out. Other than that, he's just a guy in the music business doing business.

what is a song? an expression of oneself, right? or is it just a commodity? it's both really. i mean, of course there's a business end to distributing art, people need to get paid, but at it's heart, art should never be a commodity. it's not like i'm losing sleep over this, or that this has ruined the song for me, but i do have more respect for artists who don't sell their music to... I mean, what does Billy Corgan support VISA for? are you sure he supports them? for what? seems to me, he just supports them for the paycheck he's been given.
the way i see it, if people are not going to pay for music, then the musicians are going to have to find ways to make money. i think the idea that an artist is "selling out" is an old one. personally, i would rather hear a song i like on TV than some ridiculous catchy jingle that some half talent made in his/her basement.
i am not saying that everyone purposely steals music, but i doubt there is a person on this board that can say that they have never "illegally" downloaded a single song in their lives.
for all the people that are upset everytime they hear a song they like on TV, do you get as upset when you see the Mona Lisa on TV? i can hear it now... I used to love Leonardo da Vinci before he sold out! you know what upsets me? the fact that record labels can somehow own music that the musician made. if the artist leaves this label than it can become a legal battle for the artist to keep the songs the he/she made! people should be outraged by this IMO.
i would rather an artist keep songs, release them for free on their websites, and make money by selling songs to companies and touring or by finding some other way to sell their stuff.
as long as people freely copy music cds, or digital files or whatever, I will never give an artist a hard time for licensing a song for commercial purposes

I see a song as more of an expression of emotion rather than oneself. Why wouldn't Billy Corgan support VISA? If he has a VISA card and has never had issues or trouble with the company then what's the problem?
I have more respect for artists who do whatever they want with their music rather than going out of their way to not sell music in order to please their demographic. Branding yourself in an image rather than doing what you would like to do seems more like an act of becoming a commodity.
I have a VISA card, I recorded some songs for art school that are no longer personally relevant to me, If VISA wants to use them in an add they can feel free to do so if they're willing to pay me for my creation.
How come no one has called out Morgan Freeman as a sell out? he seems to have a bigger role in the commercial than Corgan.

As Bill Hick said, they're going for that anti-marketing dollar
And Led Zep loves 'em some Cadillacs....the Stones love Apple...the Who loves whoever will give 'em a buck.
I don't give a shit what Corgan does with HIS music.
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow
They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
I think Corgan is the reason I couldn't get anymore into this band than I am. To each his own though...it's his music, he can do what he pleases. I don't think it's selling out...it's the nature of the beast, and the beast is the music industry...he is just playing the field a lot differently that other artists do.
Poor choice of song though, whoever approved that commercial probably didn't bother to read the lyrics.
Pee-on: "Sir, let's use 'Today' by the Smashing Pumpkins! It's such a hopeful song, and people will really connect with the title and today's economic crisis, and we, Visa, will be a breath of fresh air!"
Head-honco: "Johnson, that's genius! America will eat up a hopeful sounding song with a good title. The lyrics? No I don't need to read them, like any one knows what he's saying anyways, nor do they care...it's a VISA!!!!"

completely different how so? both companies take advantage of their consumers, both bands made money doing business with those business. and who's to say visa is a worse product than verizon? you?
corgan said he wouldnt sell out or whatever that quote is, vedder made a stink about att censoring them, once. in the end corgan made a deal with a giant bank, vedder made more money because he lined up with a cell phone company that censored people, more than once. yep completely different how didnt i see that the first time.......
like i said im not a corgan fan dont own anything he's done but what appeared on soundtracks (singles, etc) never bought those cause of him. and another thing i said, lets call a spade a spade. vedder and corgan are selling out on their own terms, at least there is some dignity in that.
Iggy Pop is **Hopefully** getting money from Carnival Cruise Lines for 'Lust For Life'... a song written about heroin addiction and alcoholism.
Nick Drake got royalties for 'Pink Moon' in a Volkswagen commercial...
The Buzzcocks got money for a 15 year old song in a Nissan Trucks commercial.
...
What is wrong with a punk rocker getting a bunch of money from corporate dufuses for a song they wrote a decade and a half before. It's pretty much... getting paid for doing nothing... how punk rock is that?
In my book... very punk rock. It's like pick-pocketing suit wearing douchebags... without committing the crime of pick-pocketing.

I've never been a big Smashing Pumpkins fan (I always thought Billy Corgan was an egotistical windbag) and he's entitled to live his life and career as he sees fit, but he's lowered my opinion of him recently -- especially with this TM/Live Nation deal. I'm sure he's losing sleep...
That song is 16 years old, it had its time of "sacred glory". If Corgan feels the song isn't as personally relevant to him as it was before, let him do what he wants with it.
He's in the music business; he sells music.
Brilliant.
Also, there might be a kid out there who listens to Siamese Dream because of the ad, another child saved, could be one less Coldplay fan in the world

Work blocks out YouTube...
But Iggy Pop selling car insurance???
I think it's punk rock because... who the fuck is going to buy car insurance from Iggy Pop??? You'd pretty much have to be insane.
