That song is 16 years old, it had its time of "sacred glory". If Corgan feels the song isn't as personally relevant to him as it was before, let him do what he wants with it.
well if corgan is a sell-out so is pj, and if selling out is a bad thing, lets not ignore the fact that pj has been doing it for years just because theyre our favorite band. baby clothes, socks, unique posters every night of a show, a gazllion different releases of the ten remaster, and a movie soundtrack that had its own tour with way overpriced tickets, 12.99 cds in 2000, then 9.99 digital release in 06...... oh and a paying fans only forum....
i could go on and on.
dont think im some corgan fanboy cause i dont even own a single sp album......but call a spade a spade. if somehow selling out makes a band less credible or suck, then pj deserves the same bashing.

then every other band is a sell out b/c every band Ive ever listened to sells t-shirts , posters,re masterd cd's and all sorts of other schwag
well there is a difference between a few shirts and other junk and sticking your name on everything but a coffin....only kiss went that far.
remasters and such are cool, but how many different versions of the release do you need? everything pj releases now comes in a special limited edition version that costs 3x as much as the normal version, but only adds 10 dollars more worth of junk.
I saw that commercial last night, heard Today playing and thought it all was a bit cheesy, but I also thought "well... it must be for a charity or something good" and then... no... fucking VISA. I didn't mind when Billy sold his shitty new song to Honda or whatever it was, but Today is still sacred. What next, fucker??
i was never a pumpkins fan, so i don't really care all that much. his voice annoys the hell out of me for some reason. but it's funny of he talked about other bands selling out & then he turned around & did it himself.

maybe he needs the money for some rogaine.
I've always been a casual Pumpkins fan, but Billy has always made it difficult for me to be anything but a casual fan.

He's in the music business; he sells music.
Yeah i like your point.
They will still be playing songs from ALL albums, b sides, the lot really, in 3 hourr shows so im not too fussed.
Selling out doesn't exist anymore.
This is kind of thing artists have to do to survive.
Sorry, but that's the new reality.
If more of us paid for albums instead of downloading, a lot less of these types of business endeavors would happen.
And that's not a SP defense, it's a general statement regarding all music. Including PJ. Because we all know they wouldn't have needed to do some of the deals they're doing now (I'm thinking Verizon) ten years ago.

Pearl Jam or Ed would never sell a song to a bank that is fucking their customers over left and right. There is nothing wrong with getting paid for your work but I believe there are companies that people with ethics and standards avoid. Billy has shown with this move he has no standards.

you mean to say viacom(the parent company of into the wild) cares about its customers.....
or what about verzion??? handing over phone records, without warrant, to the fbi sounds like a very classy move. or that text messages cost next to nothing for cell phone providers but they still gouge their customers. so charging someone a over the top flat rate is ethical while using percentage isnt?
oh i forgot vedder cant sell out cause we can always point to someone else. as far as i can tell pj has no standards, if we use your standard of selling out.
Billy and Jimmy sold the Pumpkins out when they reformed. That was about three years ago. Zwan must've really sucked cause B obviously needs money.
Zwan were fucking awesome imo. The album is really good. How is it obvious he needs money? are you his bank advisor or something :S
If you read interviews and stuff you would understand.
It's obvious that Billy needs money because he broke up Zwan and his crappy solo career to reform half of the Pumpkins. Now he's cashing in on the name. Nobody gives a fuck about pretentious lttle Billy, but the Pumpkins are another story.
Billy cried that he wanted his songs back. But what about his Zwan and solo songs? He doesn't give a fuck about those because they didn't make him money!
Pumpkins are my second favorite band by the way. But Billy can eat a dick.

My feelings exactly. Obviously the whole "sell out" debate is never going to end but it always bemuses me how angry and worked up people get about it.
If your job is being in a band then you are entitled to make some money off your songs. It's as simple as that. Do you feel like a sellout when you receive your paycheck at the end of the month? No, so why should Billy feel like a sellout just because he wrote a song that people still want to hear so many years later?
So what if he said he wouldn't do it. There is a global recession going on in case you hadn't noticed and I don't blame him for wanting to makle a little extra. Is he a sellout for allowing t-shirts or other SP merch to be made? Or for going on tour and selling tickets? No, but he makes money from it.
He gave Machina II away for free for fuck's sake, there's not too many bands that would have given one of their best albums in years away for nothing

Exactly. Had I not found out about this "today" Visa commercial and just heard it on TV, I would be like "cool, a SP song". Who cares what artists do with their music. As long as they dont over do it, like with action figures and make up, and a clothing line. That is just tasteless crap.
In other news, people hearing this commercial struggled to recall who the fuck the Smashing Pumpkins were and why anyone ever thought they were good or relevant.
Pearl Jam or Ed would never sell a song to a bank that is fucking their customers over left and right. There is nothing wrong with getting paid for your work but I believe there are companies that people with ethics and standards avoid. Billy has shown with this move he has no standards.

Man you are rilled up! It's like someone pulled out their cock and bitch slapped your mom in the face with it. You and Billy must be real tight. That's cool though.
Having sponsors for a tour to help pay the costs and selling a single song to be identified to a specific product is two completely different things. I think your deep love for Billy is stopping you from thinking rationally here. Step back and think.
Nothing wrong with getting paid. There IS something wrong selling yourself (in this case one's voice) to promote a shitty product. Especially when you talked shit about doing it in the first place. LOL!
I don't know...
If I had something that someone was willing to pay my $100,000.00 dollars for... in these tough economic times... I'd think I'd go for it. And i don't think i'd care what people who already think 'I Suck' would have to say about it.
...
Too bad I don't have anything worth $100,000.00 to sell.
