Wow. One of the greatest things I've heard in a long time. I think PJ needs to take a heavier band out on the road with them and I know Jeff is a big fan... this band rules.

I support this thread and all things positive concerning CTS, this album reminds me of Radiohead's OK Computer (only with more guitars). Hopefully it gives the band the attention they so much deserve, I for one cannot wait to see them on tour in support of this ground breaking album.

Considering the version I and most everybody else has heard doesn't include the epic 14 minute last song "The Last Baron", it's already lived up to the high expectations I had going in. The Last Baron is going to be icing on this deep and delicous cake.

    10/10. Five Stars. :D

wow i need to hear this.

i watched an interview that in which they explained that this album is going to be their "led zeppelin IV" in that they will now be able to come out as the musicians that they truly are. they noted that they will be playing more guitar solos, rather than, and i quote, "just playing shit." i mean i love mastodon, new and old, but i'm really excited for this new album.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.
  • yeah i need to get this album, hoping to see them at knebworth.

The hometown boys are headlining the nastiest metal fest on Saturday here in Atlanta.

They are playing for an hour and a half and brann said in recent interviews they plan on playing crack the skye from start to finish then coming out and doing their encore with older songs.

I'm hoping that is what they do Saturday even though it is a festival. I want to hear the new stuff.

I have not heard the album i want to hear it live first.

The Czar is amazing... esp after the 6 minute mark. Truly reminds me of the epicness of parts on TMV's Frances the Mute. Just awesome... can't wait until the Last Baron.

They did not play the entire album, which in retrospect was probably smart since they were headlining a festival. They did play divinations, oblivion, & Crack the Skye (with scott kelly from neurosis) off the new album though and they all sounded very good.

The show itself was great they were on fire. I've seen them 5 other times and this was the best they have ever sounded. Troy and Bill's vocals were great. Brent's were good. I'm never much of a fan of his live vocals, but Brent did tear it up big time on guitar.

Brann sings on Oblivion which is pretty cool.

Two more weeks till the new album comes out. It is going to be awesome. I got tickets to their Headlining tour for May 15 in Atlanta. Should be awesome at that show they WILL play the entire album in order :D

Glad to hear you had a good time, wish I were there. I've read numerous people who have seen them more than once saying that the band sounded the best they've heard from that show. Good indication of what's to come when they tour for Crack the Skye.

I can't wait till 10:05am on Friday, hopefully by then I will have secured my ticket for their show on May 5th at The Opera House in Toronto. This small venue tour is going to kick some serious ass, playing CTS straight through then breaking and coming back with old favourites.

I've only seen them twice thus far and both times were festival like situations, not headlining like they are this time around.

March 24th can't come soon enough! I read that they might be making videos for every song on the album, kind of like a metal version of The Wall.

I held out until today and I picked up the album. I've listend to the first 5 tracks and so far Im digging it.

It is a very different album, but it is nice to hear their sound grow and change some. I do miss the punishing songs, but I'm sure they can go back to them at another time. I was up on the air about the album until about the 3:45 mark in the Czar. Then they kicked ass in only a way that mastodon can and that song just killed it.

I can't wait to listen to the last two tracks later today when i get off work.

I'm even more excited to get my headphones out and give this one a run tonight.

I might go down to Criminal Records they are doing an instore appearance tonight.

    Fucking hooked on Oblivion atm

Divinations is cool and it does have a very FAT riff in a few places.

I remember there being a really nice jam on the last track?

not bad for a 1st spin.

Oh how I miss living in Atlanta. Such good musicians have come from ATL. Black Crowes, Cat Power, Mastodon, etc...

Have fun with the in-store and the festival, if I still lived down South I'd probably be running into you there.

The Czar from 3:45 to about 7:50 may be the best four minutes of music my ears have ever heard.

The rest of the song kicks som serious ass too. That song itself is worth the price of the cd.

I'm loving Crack the Skye after two listens. They continue to make huge leaps on each album. I'm really psyched they're playing it front to back on this tour. Pearl Jam definitely needs to take these guys or ISIS out on tour...

Yes it is going to be great. also i think the guy who does neurosis's background films during their stage show is going to prepare one for them to show when they play crack the skye on this upcoming show so the visuals should be great for it!

That said i don't think 90% of pearl jam fans would enjoy isis or mastodon much at all. Truth be told that 90% may be a conservative estimate it could be more like 95% that would not dig it.

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Picked this up on the day of release. I love it. But then again, I love all that Mastodon has done.

They are a diamond in the rough that is better known as the metal scene today. A lot of crap has been coming out, but Mastodon is a definite exception.

i grabbed it this week and really like it a lot. Great backing vocals even...something you don't really associate too often to a "harder" record.

I dont' know who the main vocalist is on this....is it Brent?

Either way, unfortunately I think I like it a little bit better than Troy...that being said I still love Remission and Leviathan.

Mmmm, Leviathan. I think I know what I'm going to play after Skye is done...:D

not a metal fan in any sense of the word but this is great stuff. any word on how they are on tour? i'd love to see this played live but I'm kind of wary of going to a metal show
Is anyone else peeved about the production work though? the sounds are not very distinct at all and it sounds terrible on my bose headphones. i hope brendan doesnt do this kind of work with pj.

mastodon's best albums definitely go in chronological order. they just keep on getting better and better!

Are you actually serious about the gig thing?

I don't think they have toured yet but the ticket price alone is worth seein Brann Dailor on the drums.

This album is more psyhcadelic rather than metal.

All I know of this band is the song they have on the Bonnaroo '08 DVD, but they impressed the shit outta me.

tickets are on sale now for their spring tour. it starts next week. I'm seeing them here in atlanta it was 19 bucks for the show (plus fees). They are going ot have a visual backdrop for the entire album. They will play crack the skye from start to finish then come back and encore with older stuff.

I go to lots of metal shows and have seen mastodon about 5 times. No need to be wary. Mastodon pits don't usually seeem too wild and if that is not your thing just stand to the back or side a bit so you don't have to worry about pushing people around. Just get ready to throw your horns in the air \m/ :D

i borrowed my roomates bose headphones last night to listen to the album and i thought it was fine. I have no complants about the production.

Brent does a lot of the vocals but as always they all sing some even brann sings on this album. Bill seems to be the one that sings the least here.

Brent did okay live but his vocals are not nearly as good live as they are in the studio, but i'm sure that is partly because he is killing it on guitar.
