i have a few minutes to kill, so i thought i'd start a new thread!

so what do you do for a living? if you're a student, what are you studying? is this what you saw yourself doing 5 years ago? what would you rather be doing? i'll start....

current job: Editor for an Oil & Gas publication firm (work from home! woo-hoo!--that's the only perk, by the way) also, i'm a musician that is coming out of hiding from writing/recording. can't wait to play some shows!

student?: yes--in grad school slowly working toward my Ed S degree in Educational Psychology

5 yr plan: not really. i've been w/ my company for about 1.5 yrs and I never thought that i'd be working in O&G. and grad school wasn't on my radar until about a year ago. i thought that i'd be teaching.

i'd rather be...: done w/ school so i can help troubled kids instead of editing articles about rich people getting richer.

k--your turn! 8-)
I LOVE MUSIC.

current job: Bartender/server. Not what I wanted to be doing, but it's a living :D I have my degree in journalism, and have worked for several newspapers and still do a lot of freelancing.

student?: Not right now, but I've considered possibly going to get my masters in English and become a teacher at a CC or something. I'd also like to learn a different language. Maybe Spanish.

5 yr plan: Still up in the air. Things have changed so much in the last five years for me, most of the changes unplanned/unexpected, I think I'm just going to let things happen and see where it takes me.

i'd rather be...: Working for a family-owned daily newspaper, preferably covering sports.

Seriously? That is exactly what I do and have been doing for going on eight years.....well except I work at a larger weekly. Paper has been in the same family for around 80 years now and I enjoy it for the most part. I'm smack dab in the middle of basketball playoffs now though and that gets to where it isn't so much fun pretty quick with teams playing from one end of the state to the other.

School: Hell no...I have intention of ever studying for another test as long as I live

5-year: What I want to do more than anything is get into some freelance writing, ideally in music. I have great dreams of having my own regional music magazine...I've got it all worked out in my head
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

I've been on both sides of it, worked for a great family owned paper in Colorado, then took a job with another paper that was corporate owned. It's like night and day. Media conglomerates suck hard. Also- If you need a music writer in the midwest when you get your magazine up and running, let me know :D

    Currently: Law student

Soon to be: Assuming I get my character cleared and can take the bar, working for a big law firm

I used to swear I'd never be a lawyer (my dad is). So I don't know how I feel about it. It's not what I expected to be doing, but I never really had expectations for my future. I partly went to law school to impress a girl, partly because I didn't know what else to do, and partly out of a misguided understanding of where it could take me. I wanted to be doing something international... like the state department or working in a US embassy somewhere. That's kind of out though... my background kinda prohibits me from any federal jobs for another 10 years or so.

In 5 years I hope to have paid off my law school loans. Then I'm thinking of cutting out of the law firm and maybe even the legal field entirely and moving to the west coast. I don't think I have the work ethic to last at a high pressure law firm. Might try to work in college administration or something.
  • current job: box office manager at an arena

student?: not in a long time...

5 yr plan: kinda where I thought I'd be 5 years ago

i'd rather be...: like most people, rich and not having to work... But I do like my job, I would just like it better if it was less hours/nights/weekends. Maybe doing the same thing, but on a consultant/part-time basis.

student?: Not right now, but I'm planning to start my MBA sometime next year, probably in Sydney

5 yr plan: Be done with my MBA and start my own business

i'd rather be...: I love my job, but if I could choose to be anything in the whole world, I'd be both an astrophysicist and a musician, or I'd travel the world surfing the best waves in every country and getting to know hundreds of different cultures... none of which are very profitable, hence I chose to do what I'm doing right now

Job: Sr. Data Analyst for a large healthcare organization

School: Just finished my Masters in IT Management in December.

5 year: Would like to be a working team leader in the not too distant future. No further school thoughts yet. That may change.

Rather be: Who knows? I like what I do, but I suppose I always have dreams of being in a band or doing something more creative like being an author (I really need to get back to working on my book). I'm realistic though, and my career suits me just fine.

Current: CPA/business manager for music acts, actors, etc.

Student: Just don't have it in me anymore....studied hard for the CPA exam and did ok, but when I started taking classes for my masters in taxation a few summers ago, I found it too difficult to focus for 3 hours at night after working a full day.

5 Year plan: same profession, yet more focused on handling the entire careers of just a few clients.

Rather Be: Co-owner (with my girlfriend) of a successful restaurant (hopefully without any conflict between the servers and chefs!:) )

Conglomerates to suck. Just recently down here in Mizzip the company that owned the paper in a neighboring county shut it down after refusing to listen to any offers to purchase it, just shut the doors. I suppose it was worth more to them a write-off.

Ok...I've got my midwest guy so now all I need are funds and a little know-how

  • current job: cancer research interviewer at Johns Hopkins.

    student?: thank Christ no.

5 yr plan: people plan this far ahead?

i'd rather be...: with an animal.
  • current job: bank teller

student: yes, am working on master's to teach social studies for middle/high school

5 yr plan: basically i'm about where i thought i'd be 5 years ago. if not, it's only because i thought i'd go straight through and get my master's without taking any time off. as for my 5 yr plan now, hopefully i'll be teaching at a middle or high school in a state that pays more starting out than WV does... but even if not, that's OK too. probably take a year after grad school to do americorps or something to help out some less fortunate folks before entering the workforce.

rather be: i wish i had the discipline and talent to be a musician. i like to sing and play guitar and whatever other instruments i pick up and learn a little on, but i'm nowhere near good enough. it's a fun hobby sometimes though.

    Current Work: Social Worker

School: Finished my MSW this past summer.

5 Years: 5 years ago I was finishing an Americorps year and still planning to go get my PhD in History. I stayed in social services after the Americorps thing, had all manner of personal situations, and decided to keep working on the ground. I got to know a lot of social workers, and it felt like a good way to practice activism. Still, I mostly assume I'll go back to history one day.

I'd rather be: Hmm, I'm pretty happy with my job/career. And I damn well better be, as I paid a lot for that graduate degree. I could use a pay bump to pay off those loans, but given the budget cuts coming to social services in NY, I'll settle for keeping my job.

current job: currently a regulation 60 specialist for a financial services provider. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I don't like to give out the name the company I work for, but it's one of the world's largest. what's regulation 60? If you know something about insurance in the state of New York, you'd know, but otherwise, i wouldn't bother finding out. :D it's just a lot of paperwork, really. i had no ambition to have this job, it's basically a step on the corporate ladder anyway, but i'm not sure yet what step to take next, and I know in my heart I want to take a step out of finance ASAP, but my head tells me to play it safe and secure until the economy recovers. although there are a few steps within my company that i plan to take, that are no more interesting, but do pay more.

student?: i have a bachelor's. that's it. i'm done. i never want to write another paper ever again.

5 yr plan: get a better job, get a better girlfriend than the last one, have a wedding and have a child whom I will guide into this world.

i'd rather be...: working in either film/visual arts or music, or preferably both. i started off college as a film major while minoring in audio production. at first i wanted to make music videos, although i grew to not like music videos so much, but i also wanted to edit sound for films. fuck why didn't i keep at that? other shit was going on during college, and i basically gave up. left school for a few years, went back to another school and completed my BA in... philosophy??? why did i fucking do that? and i've been working in finance since... what the fuck? but my dream to something creative lives on. dream job? a roadie for pearl jam! or play bass in my own band. and shoot music videos for my own band. yeah, that sounds about right!
  • current job: compliance manager at an investments firm.

Current job: I coordinate a reproductive health program at a university hospital/medical school. We train docs, see patients, and do research.

Student?: Just applied for grad school, so wish me luck that I'm accepted! Going for a Masters in Public Health. Have a bachelors in Women Studies.

5-year plan: 5 years ago I was working at my current job already. I guess I figured I'd still be here by default. It's not that I want to be here forever, but I'm not what you'd call very ambitious. We'll see what happens in 5 more years, after I finish my masters.

I'd rather be... on tour with Pearl Jam. Or I wouldn't mind being Warren Buffett or Bill Gates and traveling the world and giving away all my money to good causes. :)
  • Current Job: a waitress! Yes! I wait tables and make buckets of money doing so!

5 Year Plan: 5 years ago, I figured I'd be waiting tables in 5 years...
