Don't Black Out at PJ Shows

I stumbled across a site with a ton of shows for download and grabbed the two shows I saw on the VFC tour... Toledo and Grand Rapids. As I listen I realize "Not one note of this music sounds familiar." Neil Young was onstage jamming with the band before my very eyes, and I have no recollection of it whatsoever.

So the lesson is... be very careful about how you mix your drugs kids! Don't want to erase a show like that from your memory!

Also, anyone got any tips on places to find FLAC downloads for shows? I've been using the Present Tense website, but they don't have the Detroit show I attended or one or two personal favorites I'm trying to track down.

Oh yeah, when will the world admit that torrents are a crock of shit and that nobody can figure out what they are or how to use them unless they have multiple PHD's from the world's elite universities?

Luckily, this has never happened to me for Pearl Jam, though I was exhausted from the Wrigley sun and beer by the time the Vic show began.

I drunked away a Sonic Youth show, however, that burns me to this day.
"They said ... timing was everything
made him ... want to be everywhere
there's a ... lot to be said for nowhere."
  • I "drunked away" Foo Fighters for the most part and AC/DC just a few weeks ago. I cut myself off in plenty of time at Bonnaroo so it wouldn't be an issue with PJ....now that I wasn't about to fuck around with
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

They say every sin is deadly but I believe they may be wrong...I'm guilty of all seven and I don't feel too bad at all
  • I remember some dude back in 2006 Camden, He was out of it....looked like he was going to fall over the seats. When he fell my way I pushed him back to his feet but when he fell on another drunk dude....he got his ass beat. I know doesn't remember that......then every one carried his ass to the main ailse and left him there
I think it was during New Garden....or Rats.

I guess at least I wasn't falling over or annoying other people at those 2 shows... just have no memory of them.

Now Cleveland/State College 03 is another story... I remember the shows, but also some rather embarrassing behavior

Drink and smoke I can balance. But at those shows I was mixing the smoke with something else. From what I hear, you couldn't even tell I was buzzed. It just wiped my memory. So it wasn't so much saying when or not hanging... just have to learn what things you can and can't mix!

I don't believe you. This is my understanding of torrent:

    Download a torrent program
    Then you download the torrent...
BUT... that doesn't mean you have the songs!
No, once you've downloaded the torrent, you have to plug that into something else that will download the actual songs...
So whatever you want has to be downloaded twice
Oh yeah, and none of it will ever work... so once you've downloaded the torrent, you will spend months waiting for someone with the actual songs because the torrent you downloaded won't work with the torrent program/service you use.

How did this gibberish ever become popular?

Definitely a reason to be straight edge (as I am) - I remember the Toledo show well.

State College you say? Embarassing behavior you say? My daughter (8 at the time and now 14) remembers the following about State College - some girls barking like dogs, and some guys in the next section repeatedly chanting 'Eddie Ved'.

Regarding torrents - you just have to understand how to do it - there is decidedly a learning curve, several little details you have to take care of, and you have to have good leech behavior, and good torrent community behavior, for everything to work well for everyone, but BT is a very helpful thing to aquire large (legal of course) files. You first have to have a 'client', such as Bit Tornado or Azureus on your computer. Then you have to connect to the tracker that's keeping track of the files you want. Then you start to download and upload at the same time. There are several tweakable things that will make it all go faster.

I wasn't one of those people at State College, though I was swaying a bit and for some reason got it into my head that I HAD to keep offering to put this little girl in the row ahead on my shoulders as I was afraid she couldn't see. My buddy kept talking me out of it... I think.

I've given up on torrent. There's too much downloading and tweaking and nonsense with it, and I don't download much. I just remember once I stumbled across a "package" of a ton of Oasis b-sides I'd been trying to get for ages. I spent 2 weeks trying to figure out how to get the damn thing to work and it infuriated me that I had a large file on my computer (like a .rar file) that was the same size as 30 songs would be and took as long to download... but that WASNT the songs, it was the torrent so that I could then wait days for someone to turn up with it (or never turn up with it in my case) so that I could then download ANOTHER file of the SAME size that actually DID have the songs and call it a torrent. It made no sense to me... why not just put the actual songs on the website if you're going to host a file of that size on a website anyway?

That's what I don't get though... why download a torrent file just so that you can download other files? Why not download the files directly? It seems to me like wasting time and unnecessarily complicating things.

downloading a .torrent file is like 12kb

that file is like a key to the other people who have it open (seeders) the more seeders you have the faster it goes.
Unlike save a server, the more users thats downloading the file it gets slower. You feel Me?

I think so. I don't know what the fuck that Oasis torrent I had was then. It was a lot bigger than 12kb and nobody on the service I used seemed to have it.

well once you open the .torrent file it creates the folder say (oasis) to the original size (say it was a show, and the full size of that show was 1 gig.)
thats where the music will be when its done downloading.

But there has to be a good number of people seeding or it does take time

I've done this at a couple DMB shows. We tailgate the whole day and I end up not remembering half of the concert. I would NEVER do this for a Pearl Jam show though. Who needs an artificial high when you're seeing the greatest band in the world?

Torrents are easy. I use bittornado. Go to one of my sites. 2 or 3 clicks and its trucking. Then all that is left to do is add it to my library.

I got pretty wasted at PJ Chicago 03. 5 hour road trip/toke, combine with double fistin a couple of the big beers once we got there. I was as wasted as I get. Only time I missed anything was when I leaned over to puke in my cup. After that, was great.

I have an uncanny ability to keep my focus in times of vomit. I was playin a gig with my old band. Did a jaeger bomb onstage. About half way through the next song it came back up. I kept the song goin, without a hitch.

I've gotten sensory overload at a few shows, in smaller places, with crazy lights, from havin too many puffs of the sticky icky and beer. Nothin a little deep breathin couldn't fix.
  • So is this a downloading shows thread or a "don't get too drunk" at shows thread? I'm confused.

I'll throw in my two cents on the "don't get too drunk/whatever" at PJ shows. We were at night 2 in Boston for the VFC Tour 2004. There were four girls behind us in loge. They were clearly off their tree and during "I've got a Feeling", one girl fell down on top of me, depositing her full beer on my bandwagon t, essentially pushing me forward about three rows ahead and pissed off about a dozen people. This was probably the most awful thing I can remember happening at a PJ show. Oh, no, I guess there were others, but that was pretty bad. It pissed me off so much because that's like the only time they ever played that song and it's like the greatest Beatles song out there.

So, if your out there drunk girl who ruined that song for me 5 years ago, I'm still mad.
"FF, I've heard the droning about the Sawx being the baby dolls. Yeah, I get it, you guys invented baseball and suffered forever. I get it." -JearlPam0925
  • There are some substances that don't mix all that well with concerts. I haven't found any except cocaine. Too much worrying about getting/doing more than the show itself. I've seen people use pot like that too. Continuously smoking....Are you even watching the show dude? Anything in excess can be lame. I remeber being way too zooted on acid at lolla one year and had a minor freak out for like four hours. :D
  • I may have taken a quick siesta in the bathroom stall at MSG nt.1 this year.... until my friend came yelling for me.

    It's both... I like to multitask ;)

I dropped 2 lit cigarettes on the guy in the row ahead of me at Cleveland in 03, because I was too fucked up to hold them properly. He's probably saying the same thing about me.

Whoever gets so blizted they black out at concerts is a fucking fool. Why pay for something you won’t remember?

This is how I feel about the NW School Show in Seattle. My buddy and i got tore up on tequila shots and beer before the show. We had a great time - but my memory of the show is fuzzy.

But the right amount of alcohol and drugs can enhance a show. I.e. Showbox 2004 my buddy and I each ate a magic mushroom and had a few beers and smoked a J. That was the perfect amount of enhances and to date, this was one of my favorite PJ shows.
