So my friend saw metallica the other week and he was bragging about them....he was saying how much of a kickass setlist they played. So today I was checking the setlists for metallica (laughable) OMG 18 frickin songs a night and almost the same damn setlist everynight.....maybe a song change here or two. Not what I expected from them. Not here to start a battle.....but you guys don't know how good we have it.

Why can't it still be a good show if the setlists are similar every night? It's just a different kind of experience. Some Metallica songs are quite long and they have a long-time reputation as a great live band.
It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

Yeah, Metallica puts on an excellent show. Probably no reason to see more than one though, just like with most bands.

I haven't looked at their sets in awhile but they were changing is up every night a couple of years ago.

Also remember that Metallica's songs are a lot longer than PJ. It may be 18 songs in the set but many of them of are 6, 8, even 10 minutes long.

Dont know if you know anything about metallica, but their songs are way longer!!

If i browse my Wembley 2007 show, shortest song out of 19 songs was For Whom The Bell Tolls which was 5 mins. Same with the other 2 bootlegs from the shows i have been to, shortest song = 5 mins. Metallica play very intensely too in their epic songs!

But they don't vary the setlist too much, just chop and change a few songs each show.

And when is saw The Cure they played 41 songs!

I saw them at Roo last year and back in 04 (I think, maybe 03?) along with Godsmack- and both shows were incredible- but there's nothing like a PJ show 8-)

Metallica is incredible live. 97,98,04 for me, all great, amazing high energy shows. i think it's fine they play mostly the same stuff each night, they have a "set" and pyro too, that go with some songs, so they play them every night.

97 was crazy when, they had that fake accident thing at the end of the show. cables and walkway fell, a flaming man fell 25 feet from a tower,,,it was wicked.....

Haha... I was at S&M at MSG too. I'm not a big fan of Metallica's music, but used to work for them. Wish my name made it on that program, but my boss' name did. :) ...and yes, with PJ, we've got it pretty good.

I finally got a chance to see Metallica on this last tour. The show was absolutely AMAZING. Not necessarily like pj amazing (Pj is my fave band of all time and I don't see that changing)- but both bands put on incredible shows just different. I lost interest in Metallica (not really because of the whole Lars and Napster thing), but just got bored with their music. The live show has restored my faith in that Live in concert these guys can still kick ass. The did copy pj in the digital download thing and I love listening to the show I was at. I really wish more bands would pertake in releasing their shows, I don't know why they don't.

I saw Metallica in November and they were freaking AWESOME, they do play some of the same songs every night, but they also change the set list like PJ does. Last summer I saw PJ both shows at MSG, Hartford and both Boston shows and I heard SEVERAL (Alive, Betterman) songs almost every night. So I'm always amazed at people that think Pearl Jam play a completely different show every night, they don't.

I saw Grateful Dead about 170 times and I can tell you one thing, you could go 5 or 6 shows before you would hear a repeat, same with Phish, so give me a break about Pearl Jam playing a "different" set every night. I love all kinds of music and very much enjoy going to concerts, I'm a HUGE PJ fan, but just like the Dead, I DO NOT COMPARE every band or concert I see or hear about to the Daed or Pearl Jam, it's like comparing apples and cannon balls.

I saw Metallica as well a few weeks ago and they put on an entertaining show, and everyone was into it. 2008 may not be the best example, but PJ generally changes 10-15 songs from night to night at least. You still hear alot of the big songs. Metallica may be able to change some of the songs up, but I doubt they change that many. When I saw Tool, they put on an awesome show, but would change the set by maybe two songs. A lot of bands are like that.

And you can't complare PJ to the dead or phish, neither of those bands acheived the commercial success that PJ did. They play a differnt type of music.

I love both, glad Bob Rock is gone!

the songs are way longer- 'nuff said

I have not seen Metallica since 97 Lolla, but Death Magnetic has resparked the flame.

see em both- they both kick major ass.

I was thinking the same thing... isn't the average Metallica song about 7 minutes long? I'd be very cool with PJ sacrificing quantity for quality... give me some great jams like a 9 minute porch over the 1-2-3 combo of Evacuation, Get Right, and Save You ;)

The setlist thing would be bothersome if you're following Metallica I suppose, but they're a diff band with a different style and different fanbase. I don't think what PJ does would work for them. They have a more elaborate stage setup (like U2) and their songs are a bit more complex, without the room for the loose, lively sloppiness that makes PJ such a fun live act. Nothing better or worse about it, just different.

Plus they have an elaborate lightshow, pyro and explosions. Pearl Jam sorta just setup and do the bare minimum. They play certain songs in the same slot of the setlist because of this. Metallica blow everyone away live. Even Pearl Jam. I paid the same price for Metallica tickets last month as I did in 2004 (and as I did for Pearl Jam last year). Pretty cool they didn't raise ticket prices. Their stage setup also pretty much guarantees everyone has a great seat and view.

I was at the NY S&M show as well. One of the best shows I've seen. I also saw them this tour at the 1st Newark show they played. 18 songs and they played for 2 hours and 15 minutes. Which is as long as most Pearl Jam shows. Most songs were 8-10 minutes long. I wouldn't see them more then one time a tour but that's how I feel in general about every band except Pearl Jam.

Most times they will switch up playing Ride the Lightning with Creeping Death, Harvester of Sorrow with For Whom the Bells Tolls, And Justice for All with Sanitarium, and Battery with Blackened. They also switch up the last 2 songs in the last encore before Seek and Destroy every night Can be Hit the Lights or 1 or 2 S&M covers..Breadfan, Die Die My Darling, Blitzkrieg, Stone Cold Crazy, and Last Caress to name a few.

So mostly likely 6 different songs night. With 6 songs off the new album and 6 classic songs mixed in. I would recommend seeing them this tour if you like the new cd alot or are a fan of them at all. They also rarely play Load Re-Load stuff which is a good thing.

If you seen Tool for the 10k Days or Lateralus tours, there were minor differences between the tour legs. 10k Days tour, they had two songs(Flood, Right In Two). They'd play one of those 2 every night.

metallica play harder and faster than pearl jam. and they've been doing it since 1983. i love peral jam and love them live. but i don't think they could compete with metallica when they're on their game.

i was actually discussing this with my brother the other day. now this is an "all things being equal" question (venue, crowd size, sound quality..all exactly the same):

would you rather see vitalogy era pearl jam (my personal choice for their best live era) or do you see justice era metallica (89 to 90)?

i think i'd have to go with metallica.

I saw the last 3 shows of the US tour 2 weeks ago, they KICKED fucking ass. I was a Metallica fan way before I was a PJ fan.. so it was soo awesome. They put on a great show I was on the rail for the 1/29 and 1/31 shows, but in seats for 2/1 (my best friend on the board hopethatuchoke was giving me Super Bowl updates the entire time without me knowing it was him..)

They played Phantom Lord, which was awesome.

Not here to start a battle.....but you guys don't know how good we have it.

would you rather see vitalogy era pearl jam (my personal choice for their best live era) or do you see justice era metallica (89 to 90)?

i think i'd have to go with metallica.

Your way off the mark there... Pearl Jam by a land slide any era...
