So if I understand correctly, you do not want to be a member of 10C, because you didn't receive enough for your money, correct? And now your pissed because posting on the board is for members only.
I would suggest that you consider the reason the board has been open to members only, MAYBE THEY WANT TO GIVE US MORE EXCLUSIVE INFORMATION ON THE UPCOMING TOURS, INFO THEY HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO GIVE US IN THE PAST BECAUSE EVERYONE AND THEIR BROTHER WAS ON HERE!!!
And honestly you lost all creditability for me when you started your complaint about your Christmas gift, seriously I believe Eddie would shutter at people like you, who just want to bitch about anything! It's $.05 a day to be a member of the very best fan club there is, and I am proud to be a member!

i dont get it...
what does having people pay to be a member of a forum......and giving out exclusive information....
have anything to do with each other????
what does having 100 people on your forum and 1,000 people on your forum have to do with exclusive information????
i dont get it...........
who cares if everyone and their brother was here????
i dont get it...........
Take me piece by piece..... Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
Well, I think that perhaps the purpose in 10c members having sole posting privileges is that on the Message Pit things got negative so fast. People would come on the board and ruin discussions with anti-PJ bullsh*t everyday. This is the official PJ message board. There are other PJ message boards out there if $20 is way too much for you to shell out. How I see it is like this: If you're a big enough fan to come to the PJ message board, with a desire to post, then why not join the fan club? The advantages outweigh the cost in my humble opinion.
I have an inherent trust in not only pj, but the ten club and its entire staff. I understand why some would be disheartened that a band who's seemingly against corporate greed would all of a sudden force pit users to be tc members, which obviously means you have to pay to play... BUT, I promise that this was done for our benefit. Not only is it another perk for tc members but this is a band that is obviously about to go the digital route. We are going to get a cd via digital download at some point. If it strictly follows the Radiohead model we may not even have to pay for it. They need to finance this operation in many ways. Trying to gather more tc members is a smart business move. And although we don't want to think this way, Pearl Jam is a business too...
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...
And I'm not living this life without you, I'm selfish and clear
And you're not leaving here without me, I don't wanna be without
My best... friend. Wake up, to see you could have it all
Yes, it's a terrible thing to try and stick up for people like myself who are avid fans and want to be a part of the Pearl Jam fan community on their primary board. I, and people like me, would be much better off if we just sat silently in a corner.
I'm disappointed that more people don't want to point out that this is a pretty crappy policy that has been recently implemented and that it is being detrimental to many people in the fanbase. And... it's an easy thing to fix were there the will to do so. This isn't asking for a miracle, it's asking for a return to a good thing that was previously implemented.
As for the posts about Pearl Jam shifting toward digital models perhaps resembling Radiohead, there's some sense in that line of thinking. However, I don't think locking down the primary fanclub message board to paying members is at all a necessary step to achieve a Radiohead-esqe model.

As you said, "it's a fanclub message board" and it's for its fan club members. If you want to be part of the official fan club, then you have to pay- it's as simple as that. How many big bands are there where you don't have to pay to become part of their fan club? Not many, I'm sure. I THINK someone said in the "other music" forum that you don't have to pay to be apart of the NIN club, but I don't know what you get for free though.
Look, I agree that it was nice when anyone could post here and I miss a few people that I only can assume are not posting here because they are not members, but it's time to move on. As Kat as already said in one of the numerous threads about this topic- this is what they have decided to do as of now, but it could change int he future.

Unless your girlfriend is 4 feet tall standing on a chair isn't cool. How tall is your girlfriend when she stands on a chair? I don't want to seem like a jerk, but if standing on a chair makes your girlfriend 6ft 2 think about the person standing behind her...
BostonJammer, trust me when I say that I'm a VERY polite and considerate person and I wouldn't do anything to infringe on others at a concert. My girlfriend is short and I'm not lying when I say that she literally did not get to see any of the entire concert except for the couple of moments she was able to stand on the chair. There were not video screens or any other option to view the band. It was the equivalent to buying tickets behind a wall for her and that was the "bonus" we got from being paying fan club members along with a vinyl christmas gift we have never once played. Did she enjoy the concert even though she couldn't see and is she still a fan? Yes. But is this because or despite the 10 Club? It's despite. Now that she can't even post on the message board without buying a second 10 Club account or logging in and posting as me, is she a fan of Pearl Jam because of 10 Club or despite it? It's despite it... see how there is a legitimate grievance to be had?
Other people in this thread have said things like I lost all credibility when I griped about the fan club single. I'm not just griping about the fan club single. I dealt with that just fine in the past. My grievance is now this...
Ten Club = inferior seating to Ticketmaster for us
Ten Club = useless vinyl album for me to collect some dust with or try to sell (which is something I just don't do)
Ten Club = an inferior source of information about the band, I always get my info from better locations like Billboard or this message board in the past
I did not receive any benefit from being a paying fan club member in the past. I'm not crying about it, I'm simply stating the fact and presenting the rational argument for why I stopped subscribing to the fan club in the first place. If it works out for other people, that's great and I'm happy for them. But standing back objectively and looking at what 10 Club has done for me, it simply has never been a worthwhile investment. Then to top it off, they then take away my and many other diehard fans ability to participate on the band's primary forum. I see a forum with way less people on it now and tons of "guests" who can't post. Why shouldn't I try to be a voice for the now voiceless and why shouldn't I try to speak up for a course of action that I believe strengthens people's interest and dedication to this band instead of works to cut at an already dwindling fanbase? I feel like I'm doing my part as a proactive fan of the band by speaking up instead of going off silently into the night.
Is that really all stuff I should just accept and keep paying money for?
Kat and 10 Club may have decided that this is just the way it is going to be, but I and many others were not able to post in those discussions that may have happened here. I also feel like the only way to put pressure on the 10 Club or whoever made the decision to lock this place up is to voice opposition to the policy. That's just the way things work both on message boards and reality.
However, I don't think locking down the primary fanclub message board to paying members is at all a necessary step to achieve a Radiohead-esqe model.

Posted this while I was typing another response I should have not wrote "primary fanclub board" but rather "fan board." Because that is what this board was and they migrated the data from the primary fan board (not a closed one) to become this current board. Let them start a 10 Club message board that is exclusive if they want, but don't kill the primary fan board in the process. I think that's a reasonable request. And other bands that I am a fan of do not charge to post on their primary fan boards. Sure, some have special areas of paid content and I'm fine with that. Turning the Message Pit into paid content is just not right and it does damage to the fanbase in the process. Creating a fanclub exclusive message board while retaining a primary and open discussion forum doesn't do harm to the fanbase (at least in my opinion) and can achieve other goals that there may be for an exclusive board.
I'm sure this will be wheel-spinning words at some point, but I do feel better for doing my small part to work toward a change of this foolish policy that I feel runs counter to the ideals of this particular band.
Ten Club = an inferior source of information about the band, I always get my info from better locations like Billboard or this message board in the past
Got a point there. I find it pretty poor that a fan club is always second to announce official news to it's fans.
There's even a sticky on the main page with info about the new album that has been taken from an outside source! Surely it couldn't be hard for a Ten Club official to post updates on how the recording process is coming along?
Do you honestly think that Ed or any other member of the band doesn't know about this or hasn't had some part in putting this in place? They have reasons...
I'd be interested to find out what those "reasons" are.

Good.
Maybe some of them will give up their membership and it will make my 181xxx number that much better.
I'd hate to break it to you but your 181 number will never be good enough that you'll be close enough to the stage to even make out the faces of the band members (and you can pretty much forget about seeing Boom at all) Unless of course there is a lottery. So, kneel down and start praying my child

I had no idea what was going on either. Fortunately, I have other focuses in life, but occasionally I feel inspired enough to post. When I couldn't I was confused and slightly frustrated. It wasn't until I read this original post that I knew what was going on. It would be nice to be able to merge my old "poster" account with my TenClub account, but I'm sure that will be figured out eventually.

that is completely false. i have a 192xxx number and have had 5th (twice), 7th, and 9th rows for shows...plus a bunch of other times where they have been damn close to that...and that's before this past lottery tour.
and the one benefit i have defintaly seen since the board changed is that we have a LOT less shitty, negative, crap posts here (see red mosquito for that)...plus those "hey, i just realized that times of trouble and footsteps sound alike. why is that?" posts are gone. if they had two separate posting places for paying and non-paying people, then the non-paying place would be lame as hell and people would complain that they couldn't get into the good board. so for now, i think things are fine as they are. you said that you didnt think you were getting enough out of your membership to make it worth it to you, which is fine. but it seems that being able to post on the board is important to you, so maybe having a membership is a good thing??

Yeah, because there are no assholes who are also TenC members. If someone's a member, oh my GOD, then they MUST be talking sense.
About the seating, you were apparently NOT at Hartford last Summer.
Also, no reason to throw shit at new fans. A TenC member with a 400XXX number might be asking that exact same question about Times of Trouble and Footsteps. See, this is the exact elitist fandom shit that I hate the most. Please don't alienate people just because they haven't discovered the band in 1991.

That's right...they don't ever get any new fans...
People seem to have a problem with change...for whatever reason, the free message pit was becoming too much of a free-for-all of negativity and personal attacks. I am soooo glad that most of that seems to be gone now...
And as I said before...complain to the band, etc. about your woes. Complaining to fans is ridiculous...
Go start your own facebook group about how much you hate the Ten Club and be miserable with other people there - it's free!

no, i was not at hartford, and where your seats are definitely depends on the venue/city, so a big draw place like hartford will surely push you seat back...
and yes, there are always going to be assholes. i'm just saying that a lot of the trolls are gone, and, in general, while the board may not be as busy/active, i think the discussion that DOES take place is of a higher quality and of more interest to the hardcore people like us that use this board.

and my point was not to sound like an elitist, it was just to use that as an example of the SAME CRAP that would get posted DAILY on the old board. seriously, about every other post on the old board was complete rubbish, where now only one out of 4 is
Now wait a minute... I know this band pretty well. I know the philosophies that drive and motivate the band members. And I can't help but think they would call bullshit on this one.
The band you know well is Pearl Jam circa 2000. They were a band who charged $35 for concert tickets because their albums sold well.
The band you seem unfamiliar with is Pearl Jam circa 2009. They're a band who charge $85 for concert tickets because their albums don't sell well.

Hartford's a big draw? In that case, everywhere PJ plays is a big draw.
My fanclub number is 189xxx. I've never been closer than the 15th row and I've been as far back as behind the divider at MSG. The whole thing is a crapshoot and I, like you, hate when people complain about their fanclub seats.
This is coming from someone in the 400,xxx range. First things first: IF you don't like what the Ten Club gives you...nobody is pulling your arm to buy a 20 dollar membership. You don't have a use for albums, you don't like e-mail updates, not a poster collector...that's fine I respect that. I have a BUNCH of friends who love pj and aren't members but they also don't lose sleep at night knowing they can't post on their forums. As you said you were a webmaster, and with a free forum comes more traffic. However, some traffic is negative/redundant. I'm not trying to sound pompous or anything but there were a lot of questions on the old forum that would be asked 5 times a day. I didn't post much and I still don't but this is valid.
Bottom line = If the club isn't working for you than don't buy it. This isn't a huge expense and I understand if you have to put things before the band. However, the "countless voices" your leading can still go in to the goods section and pay the fee. I'm not giving in to society, or establishment etc. Good luck man I understand where you're coming from on SOME points, I just feel like it's a battle that won't be won.

hartford is a big draw. there are about 10 giant cities within 3 hours of it. i have gotten my great seats at venues that are a bit out of the way... (thunder bay, nashville, grand rapids, rapid city). my seats do get much worse at high-demand venues, like the united center or mansfield, but they have always been at least decent. never ventured into that MSG clusterfuck, however, which is obviously the worst in the world for fanclub seats...

There's nothing lacking reason in the above post. I too realize that I'm trying to wage a battle which may prove fruitless, but I still feel like I'm at least trying to fight the good fight for what I believe is in the best interest of fans and the band.
I think a perfectly reasonable way to attract new fan participants and to give "old hands" their space too is to leave the old message pit as it was and create this new one as a 10 Club added benefit. That's an additional benefit to fan club members that many may choose to pay for while taking nothing away from others. I fully comprehend not wanting to have to sift through some of the garbage posts (posters posts were my personal pet peeve toward the end of the old board). I don't feel like the gains some have stated have been made by the new board justify the losses in the process. Essentially the largest gathering of Pearl Jam fans was gutted. A part of it may live on, but I'd hope that PJ fans would have come together with a more unified voice and compassion for each other to make more of an outcry against this decision.
I'm personally thankful to any of those who may have posted something similar to my grievance or who tried to defend those who now find themselves voiceless in Pearl Jam's largest gathering outpost.
To the person talking about me only being familiar with PJ circa 2000... well, I disagree. But more and more I will agree that this band's external affairs appear to more closely resemble acts like the Rolling Stones than what we were once familiar with as their roots. I understand evolution, baby. But there's a good evolution and a bad one. Muting fans and charging them to have a voice in the largest online fan gathering = a bad one. That's my stance and I probably don't have much more to say on the topic. I got it off my chest, I'm not crying myself to sleep, but I will continue thinking that a large portion of fans have been directly screwed by greed and the 10 Club or somebody else making poor decisions.

i decided this past summer's tour was the one for which i'd dare to venture into MSG clusterfuck territory with 10C tickets, and i was surprised when i receive virtually identical 10C seats for both MSG shows (16th row on the floor). obviously demand will be higher in the larger markets as opposed to the smaller ones, but regardless of the venue/city, 10C tickets are for the most part the better route,...of course there are exceptions to every rule hehe

i think the thing to remember is that it's not so much a battle as it is playing by 10C's rules. the 10C can't please every single member, and quite frankly they don't have to - let's face it, we're impossible to please
in all seriousness, the band, via the 10C, taking direct ownership of the message-board and instituting specific terms and conditions is entirely at their discretion. fans, 10C members and non-members alike, can either accept or reject those terms and conditions. the band and 10C will decide what is or isn't in their best intersts, and there's very little that can be done otherwise,...

Look, I agree that it was nice when anyone could post here and I miss a few people that I only can assume are not posting here because they are not members, but it's time to move on. As Kat as already said in one of the numerous threads about this topic- this is what they have decided to do as of now, but it could change int he future.

Got a point there. I find it pretty poor that a fan club is always second to announce official news to it's fans.
There's even a sticky on the main page with info about the new album that has been taken from an outside source! Surely it couldn't be hard for a Ten Club official to post updates on how the recording process is coming along?
Good.
Maybe some of them will give up their membership and it will make my 181xxx number that much better.
Well said.....
I'd be interested to find out what those "reasons" are.

the 2 of you can now move 2 seats to the left....
hehehehe...........
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
I'd hate to break it to you but your 181 number will never be good enough that you'll be close enough to the stage to even make out the faces of the band members (and you can pretty much forget about seeing Boom at all) Unless of course there is a lottery. So, kneel down and start praying my child

that is completely false. i have a 192xxx number and have had 5th (twice), 7th, and 9th rows for shows...plus a bunch of other times where they have been damn close to that...and that's before this past lottery tour.
and the one benefit i have defintaly seen since the board changed is that we have a LOT less shitty, negative, crap posts here (see red mosquito for that)...plus those "hey, i just realized that times of trouble and footsteps sound alike. why is that?" posts are gone. if they had two separate posting places for paying and non-paying people, then the non-paying place would be lame as hell and people would complain that they couldn't get into the good board. so for now, i think things are fine as they are. you said that you didnt think you were getting enough out of your membership to make it worth it to you, which is fine. but it seems that being able to post on the board is important to you, so maybe having a membership is a good thing??

Go start your own facebook group about how much you hate the Ten Club and be miserable with other people there - it's free!
no, i was not at hartford, and where your seats are definitely depends on the venue/city, so a big draw place like hartford will surely push you seat back...
and yes, there are always going to be assholes. i'm just saying that a lot of the trolls are gone, and, in general, while the board may not be as busy/active, i think the discussion that DOES take place is of a higher quality and of more interest to the hardcore people like us that use this board.
and my point was not to sound like an elitist, it was just to use that as an example of the SAME CRAP that would get posted DAILY on the old board. seriously, about every other post on the old board was complete rubbish, where now only one out of 4 is
I'll have to agree with that.
