only difference is...here you are known by some anonymous username, whereas facebook, myspace, etc....you willingly put out your true identity and and other info you choose. i don't think i am being smart about it, i just don't like to be obvious about it either. as i said, for me, i far rather keep track of people thru other, more low-key ways. quite honestly, if it weren't for pj, i'd probably never have gotten involved in any online community, message board, etc. i never got involved in chatrooms, blogs, etc. this polac e- or the first 'this place' for pj that i joined - is what really bought me out, participating on the internet. otherwise, it was merely a resource tool.

I showed that video to my 19 and 14 year olds. They actually watched it - we were in the kitchen and the 19 year old had her laptop out and was goofing around. They watched it, and I noticed a couple of audible swallows. They are both bright girls and understood everything. I think it will give them food for thought.

that's nice to hear... there's hope for the next generation yet . I'm not sure kids are fully aware... sure our generation may be a bit wary but I don't think they really have a clue... have you made them read 1984 yet? I think all kids should read that to know how things COULD be. :(

I don't know if they've read that or not. They should. I may drop a few hints and see what they say. They are plenty subversive when they want to be!

excellent... maybe tell them they're making it into a major film soon starring whoever their favourite stars are that usually works with kids and they'll read it in a night

I know people have the right to privacy, but I don't feel the need to hide anything.

Yeah its honestly not that bad, people are just paranoid. I'm curious - for those of you don't really care about privacy issues in conjunction with facebook, how would you feel if a company you've applied to a job for saw your facebook? Have you protected your infomation and pictures for this contingency? It has been documented that companies do in fact check facebooks, and have made decisions not to hire people based on what they saw.

I understand what you are saying to not put your email address on there, but facebook may be giving it to spammers.

I read part of your link there and I speaking of "provocative", I don't understand some of the slutty avatar pics I've seen on myspace, in particular. During my lunch hour at work, I have checked out musician's myspace accounts and I'm afraid I'll be busted for looking at porn b/c their friends are wearing thongs and S&M attire or are 3/4 nude. I guess it's to drum up business.

I can't believe they thought the whole "trust us" and "we wouldn't use your information in a way you wouldn't want us to" response was going to cut it.

I could care less... When hiring people, I do check facebook and myspace and some people put stupid things on there (and not make them private). People who willingly put their whole lives on there have no room to be concerned about "privacy".

My facebook is private, but honestly if a potential employer saw mine, I wouldn't care... a few pics of me and my family (and dog) is pretty much all that is there. They might find out that a few high school friends are still drunken idiots, but who doesn't know people from high school that are still like that 15 years later?

I'm applying for jobs and don't really have any concerns about Facebook. I have my profile set to viewable only by friends, though I do have many of my photo albums available to all. As far as privacy is concerned, I think common sense rules all. If you put anything out to the world via the internet, it's out there for all to see.

did you see the young lady who was fired for writing that she was bored at work on her facebook? her supervisor fired her b/c she had been there for 3 months and he needed a real go getter and felt that with that attitude, she would not be a good employee for the position. edited
