Not at my current job (as a nanny)...but when I worked in a bullshit office setting I did on a regular basis. LOL!

I think it's easier in some office jobs where the work needs to be done but isn't particularly urgent. My last job, there were a lot of strict deadlines and short timeframes to do them in so calling in sick would have really left them in the shit. I know people go on about working as part of a team blah blah blah  but when it really IS teamwork, you're not so tempted to call in cos you don't wanna hurt the team.

I'll agree with you there. It's all relative. In my last job (accounting) the majority of my work was really flexible, it just had to be done by the end of the month. However, if it was urgent and necessary I wouldn't have called out so easily.

The "sickie" is a national pass time in Australia. My husband says that days off are wasted on being sick!! ;)

A couple of years ago my brother took a sickie to catch the State of Origin (a huge rugby league match) and was horrified when the next day he and his mates were on the frontpage of Brisbane's largest newspaper drinking beer on tables in front of a pub up the road from where the game was being played. He had a bit of explaining to do to his boss... lucky he has the gift of the gab!

I had a similar thing- was caught on the lead item footage of all the tv stations' evening news, at the front row of the official Socceroos celebration after a huge match back in 2005.

The boss figured out I'd be sporting a hangover that day, the day after the match, just not to spend the day out partying with random fans from all over the country :)

I have so many sick days built up though. I got an e-mail from the personnel department recently about the fact that I'd lose those old days if I didn't use 'em. It made me feel like I SHOULD be taking some days off!!

I've taken one or two mental health days, but only when it's one of those days that it's usually really dead and it won't cause too much of a problem for everyone else.

Calling in sick is a waste in my line of work. My phone rings non-stop regardless of whether it's legit or not. I was once put on speakerphone in a management meeting while home with a stomach flu... Might as well grab a bucket and go sit at my desk.
It's awesome...no one calls in sick so the whole office shares every bug; we all suffer equally

  • When I worked for UPS they used to give you shit every time you called in sick. After awhile the guilt went away. With 6 sick days I would use them for two 5 day weekends. They had more sympathy if you called each day and said, day 1 " I'm coming down with something", day 2 "not feeling good at all, ( can't hold food down)", day 3 "feeling better but still very weak, see you Monday!" click (hang up) :D
So, What you Giving ?........ (Thanks Speedy, Alesek, & Arq+friends)
