So I just saw Gran Torino yesterday and I have to say, Why the hell is that movie not up for anything this year!? It was by far the best movie I have seen this year and I am appalled that he is not even up for best actor. Anyone else agree/disagree?

It was great but no one from the movie deserved a nomination..it was just a really good movie.

    Damn good movie....
  • I hope "Get off My lawn" becomes the new "Make My Day"

p.s. I know i'm asking too much with this.
  • I really liked the movie but I thought the acting was kind of lacking. The girl was good and Clint was good too! The rest weren't very impressive. I loved Eastwood's character, though.

By no means do I think anyone should have been up for best supporting actor. I just think he nailed the old man stuck in his own time perfectly. It was almost like you could see him being Walt even in reality.

Have to agree wholeheartedly. I've seen a few of the films nominated and Gran Torino is clearly better than any of them.
The only people we should try to get even with...
    ...are those who've helped us.

Right 'round the corner could be bigger than ourselves.
  • I saw the Wrestler a few weeks back and I loved it. I didn't think they're was going to be a better movie....i was happily mistaken
  • Loved the movie!
I thought CE was amazing, but agree about the other actors. I'm surprised Eastwood isn't up for anything for this one...
I mean, the writing isn't even up for anything? Come on!

I was the opposite of you. I saw Gran Torino first and didn't think I'd see anything better then I watched the Wrestler and liked it more. I think the kid "Toad" (I forget his "real" name) was a pretty shitty actor. The worst part was when Walt locked him in the basement.

And when they were breaking his construction tools. I don't know maybe when this all blows over I will like them equally. I probably do but have the new movie jidders ya know

  • It was good, but, like a few have said before me, it's not really Oscar worthy in any particular field. Clint plays a grouch. Big deal. The girl was good, but did she really stand out? And the kid, Tao, wasn't very good.

I think people get caught up in the overall feel of the film. I guy standing up to a bunch POS gangbangers in his neighborhood and the relationship that builds between the people that feel grateful to him. Except for that grandma, man. Even after he went to the rescue prior to the drive by, when he drops the dog off she's still cussing him out...Mong style.

It was really really good... it felt like a proper film... didn't leave that hollow feeling a lot of the films left this year... you'll find out for yourself but the ending was typical Clint... cheesy as fuck... the rest of it though was great.
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable

Does that mean it will count towards 2008? I really hope the consider the nationwide (don't know if it was worldwide) release as the real one. I mean...he at least deserves a nomination (or we should at least be able to see him perform the song at the end hahaha)

Well yes, the movie came out in December of 2008. Clint earned a best actor award for his performance from the National Board of Review. It was also Golden Globe nominated for best original song..

Wow, so I was correct in calling myself an idiot, but not for the right reason haha Thanks so much for clarifying this whole deal with me.

This was one of the best movies I have seen in awhile. Clint Eastwood is extraordinary.
We’ll meet again, but not yet…not yet.

Because it wouldn't come up for an award 'til next year. By the way, it was made here in Michigan, mostly in Detroit, but I live about 25 miles north and they did a scene on my corner. I haven't seen the movie yet, but want to see what they did at the corner. The place they did it at is next to a cider mill and in the woods. It has a closed down restaurant place. The kind of place you walk up and order at a window and eat outside. The place has been closed down for 20 years, but for the film they put up a pay phone on the outside. They kept it as closed down, I beleive. A dog was in the scene too, cuz I saw the dog. I couldn't see too much 'cuz they used cops to keep people away from the area. I only saw the added pay phone, the dog, and lots of semi trucks and people (the crew and equipment).
They may have cut that part. I hope not. So, for any of you who see it, if you see a scene where he uses a pay phone at a little shanty of a walk up restaurant with his dog, in the country, that is where I live.
    Save room for dessert!

Finally rented this and watched it last night. Awesome movie. What a way for Clint to go out. Really made you think about his contributions to film over the years. This guy is almost 80 and directed two movies last year and two the year before that and acted in this one. Unbelievable.

I saw it this evening. The best movie I saw for months. Maybe some actors didn't play good, but Eastwood was great as always.
