"PEARL JAM'S NEW STUDIO ALBUM AND TOUR COMING IN 2009!"
To quote the 10C from Newsletter #8: "Please understand we have a lot of members and it is very hard to please everybody. If you are one of those unhappy people...please call 1-900-IDN-TCAR."

WOW, looks like Epic/Sony is really milking this for what it's worth. Notice how the albums at the bottom are only Epic/Sony releases, so maybe no Avocado reissue.
Down in the hole, Jesus tries to crack a smile beneath another shovel load.
It's exciting to see how much attention pearl jam is going to be getting...but it the same time its kind of unsettling for some reason. This seems kind of over the top...but no need to bring it down i guess, new album!

Well, just because that is the goal, doesn't mean that it will work. I think Pearl Jam's time in the public eye has come and gone. All of these marketing efforts might sell a few more records and tickets but overall, I don't think we will every see them return to anywhere near the stardom that they had in the 90's.
I do see your point about this being a little unsettling though. It is definitely a strange feeling.

ugh. i dont really need more people trying to get the same 10c tickets im trying for :? and yes, i agree that their moment in the sun is over and that they wont get as popular as sony wants them to be now. they were part of the grunge phenomena and that's over. oh well, it'll still be cool anyway i guess. and that album/tour better be out at the end of the year, i need to make damn moneys first!!!
Obviously, the album and tour news is very exciting!
There's just something about seeing the marketing strategy laid out so cold and calculating that at first made me feel dirty. Previous posters used the word "unsettling" and after a bit of thinking, it's probably a more accurate description of my reaction.
At face value, it appears to go against many forms of advertisement that the band has railed against for the past 18 years. In reality, there has probably not been a single item released by Pearl Jam (or any product by any other company) that hasn't had this much thought or calculation behind it. Successful businesses attempt to predict every aspect of their targeted market's needs and wants. And I for one, want Pearl Jam to remain successful. Hopefully that continues to lead to more tours and new music for years to come.
It is "unsettling" though as a consumer, when one realizes how much calculation and manipulation goes into "helping" you choose what brands and products you purchase.

I totally get what you're saying, but no matter how personally connected we feel to this band and their music, it is business.
That doesn't mean that they don't love or care about their fans, but as an adult I try to put this stuff into perspective. This is their job, and they're executing it pretty damn well!

Its the same for any business, it looks cold on paper. If you were to look at anything though, Movies, TV, Books, Sports, most of their marketing stratgies are way more complex than this.

Pearl Jam is in the business of making records, and in order to stay in the business of making records, Pearl Jam must sell records.
This is a far cry from the world domination promotion blitz surrounding many bands of today; In fact this particular promotion scheme for this re-issue is considerably lightweight in comparrison to most.
I fucking detest this "punk rock guilt trip" that ignorant halfwit shit eaters try and lay at the doorstep of bands like Pearl Jam who are merely trying to "sell" their amazing music.
No one calls you a sell out for getting in your car and driving to work each day.
Are you telling me that the purpose of your career is about more than MAKING MONEY?...give me a fucking break.
Granted musicians have a greater burden to carry when it comes to artistic credability that us regular working stiffs don't have to worry about...but last time I checked...the band hasn't exactly jumped the shark in that regard.
I don't see any collaborations with fucking Lil' Wane coming down the pipeline.
Regardless....
It's called making a living. We all do it
Get over it.
TEN was a landmark record...A huge record for many of us on this board.
This re-issue is not only a celebration for us "old" and "longtime" fans... but it's also an introduction of Pearl Jam to a whole new crowd...
This is a good thing
Stop shitting in the punch bowl.
