"Oceans" EDITED on Unplugged DVD

edited March 2009 in The Porch
If this is the version that will be on the DVD then the "OH BETH" has been obviously edited and it sounds ridiculous. Thankfully not as ridiculous as "The Boss" sounded and acted during his lame and embarrassing Super Bowl performance, but still bad. As for Bruce, can you say S E L L O U T ? I mean, did he really need to run across the stage and do a knee slide then top it off with his momentum carrying his crotch into the cameraman and into our homes??? They should leave the Super Bowl to pop acts but as long as respectable artists are willing to accept the offer and act like pop acts and make us cringe with embarrassment and shock, then they'll keep having them. I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. Is nothing sacred anymore? I hope, you know who, never go down this route. That would be the end of it for me.

The part at the end, where he goes ohhhhhhhhhh
on the original broadcast he says ohhhhhh beth every time and this "edit" just sounds like grunts rather than "beth" small edit if you ask me, least of our problems.

fine with me................never really liked the fact that the line was added at the end of the song anyway.

I always liked to hear it in the original because it was true, raw emotion. Obviously Ed feels differently now and its understandable that he would want it taken out.

I agree with this except for your second sentence. Things change over time but that doesn't mean you're supposed to completely forget about the good memories even if you're not with that person anymore.

I was hoping will all the space on dvd's that we'd get both versions (like Nirvana unplugged). The Nirvana one has the TV version and the unedited complete version.

Pearl Jam's TV version runs maybe half an hour? The unedited about 50 minutes... You can fit 4 hours onto a dvd. It'd be a shame to not have a complete unabridged version including RITFW and Oceans.

This is interesting. How did Eddie remember that? I can''t picture him sitting around at his house watching youtube videos of old performances and stumbling across that and saying "holly shit, we've got to edit that out".

I also wouldn't have thought he would be the type to go back and edit something so small like that out.

Although a lot surprises me. I am the only one who is surprised that the Ten Club now promotes the stick man figure, when just a few years ago they made a dig at it for being too cliche.

I'm just satisfied the DVD is coming out. They weren't happy with the performance as far as I know, so I don't mind if they edit it a bit. I think it's awesome, but I'm not in the band so......

They're releasing it on their terms, and I'm glad it's coming out!

I understand the edit on a personal level and can see why it may be a rather sore memory for Ed.
The omission of the "Oh Beth" phrase from the DVD release is certainly plausible considering the obvious.

Mind you, I haven't watched this show in years but I'm fairly certain that this particular performance of"Oceans" wasn't exactly the high water mark of the Unplugged session anyways.

I guess I'm happy just as long as the meat and potatoes of the show is there in all it's 5.1 Dolby goodness...this slight omission likely will not upset me or ruin the show for me.

Now Editing "Porch"...that would be fucking high treason.

My opinion is that any re-release or dvd-releases should be true to the original version. No added tambourines, harmonicas, vocals, guitar, etc... Everything recorded should have been present in the original. If they want to have ed with different lyrics on songs, maybe they should just mute his mic. Not a big deal on this, but I think that changing the existing performance is not a good thing to do.

I don't know about 4 hours on a commercial DVD (low bitrate), but easily over 2 hours. I'm also hoping for a few other thngs on the disc, otherwise it'll be cool, but a tad disappointing.

I thought that was a typical Bruce performance, I'm not a huge fan of his, but he didn't "pop" himself out or anything. Thats how his shows are. He runs around, is full of energy and dramatics. Not sure where your coming from at all with that one.

I think he needs to put on his big boy undies and get over it! I think about everyone who buys this knows what the original version is anyway!
    I mean really why edit?
I wonder if they edited the part about her that is before SOLAT?

it sounds very funny at the beth part, I always liked it previous, that part has now gone from extreme love for someone to a bit hate/hurtful.

I find it weird that they edited that part, I just watched it and i couldn't help but laugh... though for a fan who has never seen this (if they exist) you wouldn't be able to tell unless you have seen the original a few times before.. I always though that was sweet of him to call out her name during that performance, it was spontaneous so it added to the song imo...

It definitely doesnt ruin the song or anything but after watching that bit a couple of times and specially since you can see Ed's lips clearly say Beth but then you hear that grunt on top.. LOL I couldn't help but laugh

Maybe the band thought we wouldn't notice..... on the other hand, if the band thought we wouldn't notice then they don't know us to well yet - LOL!

    terrible.

editing performances, cutting songs, just embarrassing.

Florida 1994, Ed endorses the death penalty for a murderer who he read about in the paper. if they ever open the vault and release that show, will it be edited out? truly sad.

I watched the DVD once, but I wont watch it again. I'd rather watch the complete, real version.

But we're not buying his partner. We're buying a performance of their music which occurred in 1992. If they're giving it away for free, hey, no problem. Change all you want. But they're charging for this thing... a lot. They simply should have disclosed "this is an altered version of what aired on MTV". Then let the CUSTOMERS make the choice on whether or not to give them their money. That's all.

Kinda! It's like an altered tattoo. It's like you know that millions of people are familiar with your tattoo, and love it's craftsmanship... and you say "hey, give me money and I'll give you a copy of my tattoo!" and we gladly pay you and all get the copy, but it's not the same tattoo, and it's missing something over here, and it's missing a big part over there. Well, for some of us, we thought we were getting a copy of the real thing.
