Animal Collective is pretty cool, but Deerhoof brings the fucking rock. Watch the last video from the first link "Rainbow Silhouette of the Milky Rain." Their drummer is the best in the biz and the guitarists are killer. Also I love Satomi's vox. Such an incredible band all around.
the best band out right now is my morning jacket. no question
I liked the Guitars. Personally I thought the drummer was highly annoying and wasn't really even that good. Sure, he makes some fancy fills on his little Guitar Hero 4 drumset, but nothing spectacular.
Are you kidding me? That guy can play his little set better than most with a full set. He has such control over the dynamics, not to mention he knows his way around a time signature.
Evil Urges was horrible. I honestly heard 30 albums last year that were better. It Still Moves and Z are great albums but Evil Urges was a huge let down. As for Animal Collective, Merriweather, Strawberry Jam, and Feels are all some of the best albums released this decade. Sung Tongs has some great songs on it as well. Anything before that I wouldn't recommended for casual fans. However, the top was "best fucking band out right now" and right now means what have you done for me lately and quite frankly My Morning Jacket's latest album just doesn't get it done while Animal Collective have been getting progressively better for the past several years.
It seems like every couple of months or so I get on massive PJ kicks, and it's like I rediscover them all over again. I'm currently in the middle of one of those kicks now. At work I'm auditing a job that is a three hour drive, each way, so I have to leave my house at 3am. It started on tuesday and will last until next friday, so for 6 hours a day for the next week PJ probably won't leave my CD player in my car, and that still won't quench my PJ thirst. Like I said,it's been that way for me since 1992, so it's not just some "new band" phase. For me there is no other band that even comes close to that feeling.
Because of that, Pearl Jam gets my vote for "Best Fucking Band Out Right Now" with the caveat of "...And Forever" added to the end of it.

the best newer band out there now is My Morning Jacket but even they have been around for 10 years now... Fllet Foxes, MMJ, Hold Steady and Wilco for mine.
Musicianship is all well and good, and we can argue until the end of time over who's better at what instrument, or who's making the most artistic statement, or whatever. Personally, I could care less about that stuff as long as you're making music that sounds good.
Torche sounds really good.

come on. no it wasnt. it was on many top 50 lists and got many 4 star reviews. it was not horrible, sir.
I agree with you in that I think Evil Urges was a great record, but it's so divisive you surely can't be surprised by a negative reaction to it. It's a very different record for them, and it's sure to turn some people off. At first, I hated it myself; it's one of those records you have to give five or six spins before the initial falsetto shock wears off, songs reach out and grab you, and it really starts to feel like an awesome record.
I just had to reply because you're basically telling someone they're wrong for thinking it's horrible. Everyone's entitled to an opinion; and just because it was critically acclaimed, doesn't mean we're supposed to love it by default.
And I know you believe this, because you just said Animal Collective "sucked balls" despite the fact they scored 91 on Metacritic (btw, MMJ scored 67, so maybe it wasn't as widely hailed as we think). And, for the record, I don't really "get" Animal Collective either, so it's not about that either. Just defending the right to opinions.
and he told me i was wrong for thinking it was great. its all subjective, blah blah blah round and round we go.
What exactly is so "horrible" about evil urges? Take out the middle of the album, and its one of the greatest albums they've made and of this decade. Everyone's welcome to their opinion and such, but when you make such a blanket statement where you assert that you are right, and everyone else is deaf, your opinion is worthless.
And on topic, deerhoof's been on my radar for a while but i never bothered to listen, I'll have to check them out.

agreed...MMJ is the best out there right now...they could become the next Grateful Dead or maybe PJ already is...either way I saw Animal Collective at APW and they were good but not remarkable imo

as far as animal collective, i really don't get it. i got the new album merriweather and i kinda like it but i don't see anything great about it. their kinda weird and what they are doing doesn't seem like traditional music. my morning jacket just comes out with straight rockers and beautiful songs, animal collective comes up with some weird artsy electronica shit...it's kinda cool, but seems more like a novelty. just my opinion. i do like animal collective though, i just don't see how they could be considered the best band in the world by anyone.

I'm with you. MMJ is kicking ass all over the place, though Hold Steady is hanging right with them. And most of the Animal Collective stuff I've heard sounds like crap.
If we're not talking about Pearl Jam, then I agree 100%

Going to see both of these bands within the next month and a half.

Their Bonaroo set and NYE MSG set are stuff legends are made of.
