Just watched The Outlaw Josey Wales last night for the first time. I am working a list of movies that I have never seen and need to catch up on. A awhile back someone started the Favorite Gangster Movie thread. So that one got me thinking, what are your favorite westerns?

In no particular order:

The Shootist
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Unforgiven
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Pale Rider
High Plains Drifter
The Man With No Name trilogy
The Searchers
Dances With Wolves
Open Range

3:10 to Yuma was excellent, as was Unforgiven. I've got a soft spot for Tombstone as well.

The entire Man With No Name trilogy is up next on my netflix.

I have seen Appaloosa, its very good. Don't go into it expecting some hollywood western though, it much more like the old spaghetti westerns.

Best Western in my book jumps between two movies

    1) The Good the Bad and the Ugly
    2) One Upon a time in the West (the fact that this movie hasn't been mentioned is a travesty and should be immediately watched if anyone hasn't seen it)

Both are excellent, but different. Epic movies!

Oh, and Tombstone is much, much better than Wyett Erp!

I'm not a Western buff at all, but Val Kilmer in Tombstone is unbelievable.

I also really enjoyed the updated 3:10 to Yuma. I'm thinking I should see the original as well...

I do think that Val did a great job as Doc in Tombstone, but I just think Tombstone was much better done. Probably sensationalized a bit for Hollywood though. In regards to Wyett Erp, I just don't think Costner did that great of a job. He has made good movies in his career but, Wyett Erp, Waterworld, and The Postman were very crappy. He kept trying to make epic movies after Dances with Wolves, but never was able to hit a home run again.

I am going to say again that if anyone hasn't seen "Once Upon a Time in the West", and they like westerns, they should definitely check it out. Its a classic.

OK, I have some to check out now. Never seen Once Upon a Time in the West. Never seen Shane! How did that happen?!?!

Sorry, Speedy. Left High Noon of the original list. That definitely belongs.

  • indeed, it is shocking and disgusting behaviour that 'once upon a time in the west' wasn't mentioned before.
one of the best written movies ever.

also surprised to see 'blazing saddles' not on the tips of people's tongues. whether you see it as a western or a comedy is up to youself i suppose.
...Pearl Jam, a group filled with pride, passion, and intricate musicianship. Their music is full of subtle textures, rich color, soul-searching power, imagery, and eerie dissonance.

    Fair enough answer. :)

I didn't like it cause it was too Hollywood. Kurt's acting was a bit too much. Kevin's version I like cause it explains and shows more of what Wyatt's life was before he became a lawmen.
