Will the economy affect YOUR pj purchases this year?

I have a HUGE Pearl Jam memorobilia collection. I bought the Super Deluxe Ten box because I had to have it. I don't purchase t-shirts or hoodies or posters though so I save money there. If they tour in 2009 in my area then I will buy tickets to one show...I don't think I can afford to attend more than one show right now. Hopefully the economy gets better in the upcoming months and that changes.
I did cut back last year though...I attended one 2008 Pearl Jam concert but did not go to Eddie's solo concert in my area because tickets were too expensive :(8/29/00, 7/3/03, 5/24/06,6/28/08 & 6/30/08, 10/9/09,10/28/09, 10/30/09 & 10/31/09, 5/15/10, 5/17/10, 5/18/10, 5/20/10 & 5/21/10, 10/23/10 & 10/24/10, 9/3/11, 9/4/11, 9/11/11, 9/12/11, 9/23/11, 9/22/12, 9/30/12, 7/16/13, 7/19/130 -

i would love to buy memorabilia, but i would rather have the memories of a tour. so i will go to shows but i wont buy a shirt.0
-
It might be a problem if they were touring, but since they currently are not it's not too bad, just some minor purchases.0

DeLukin wrote:Reissues, remasters, potentially a new album and tour with new posters, etc... just curious, will what's happening in the economy affect your ability to spend on PJ in 2009? Personally, I've been hesitant to pull the trigger on the Ten reissue because I just don't know what's going to happen down the road. Anyone else feeling this way, or am I just paranoid?
well i did order the super deluxe...but that was with last year's money.
seriously, hubby and i have already decided that some serious avings is a priority for us this year for many personal reasons.....just want to get more diligent. we've both been pretty generous with ourselves these past couple years, and fortunate overall...always...so no complaints. but yes, already said, if pj tour this yea, and of course i hope they do!...local shows only. i mean, i assume they'll play at least a couple NYC vicinity dates, and that'll be that. i will get my posters b/c that's just a *must* now :P...but probably hold off on framing.....and yea....that's it...nothing more. i've traveled far and wide for pj and loved every minute! it just doesn't fit with my year plans this time round, and sure...the economy being what it is....i can't see being too frivilous this year.Stay with me...
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow0 -
Not really. My family adopting a stray cat put the Deluxe Edition Ten purchase on the backburner! Kitten vaccinations (the full set, 'cause we don't know her background), de-worming, lab tests to determine any diseases (clean!) and an upcoming spay surgery. The first bill cost my Mom and me $350, and I expect the spay surgery to be about the same, if not closer to $400.
I'm cutting back on superfluous spending overall, anyway. At the Vancouver '05 show, I bought a lot of merch, whereas at Ed's show, I only bought the t-shirt (in the past I may have also bought the lighter "just because"). The next time I see them, I doubt I'll buy more than 1 or 2 things - depending on what they are.0 -
Yes.
In the past I would have jumped on the Deluxe Edition, this year I waited and thought about it and realized its just "stuff". Stuff I would "like to have", but don't need. It's almost the cost of 2 tickets to a show and I would much rather do that. Trying to pick which festival to go to this year and if a PJ tour comes around I will be ready. Again as someone else said, I would go to the show but not buy a shirt...unless it was some kick ass shirt.
It's all about planning and the trickle down affect is going to go on for a long time.
More than half of my friends have lost or are losing their jobs. Thats a scare enough to cut my spending.Thank you fellow 10 clubber for saving my ass....again!!!0 -

Bingo. I was thinking the exact same thing as I have been working my way through the 2008 tour. I just finished Camden 2, so MSG is next, and the shows just dont blow me away.
2003 - flew to MSG and Camden, drove to Columbus, Pitt
2004 - drove to Toledo, GR and StL
2005 - drove Kitchener, London, Hamilton
2006 - flew to SF for all 3, drove to Cincy
2008 - flew to DC
plus been to every Illinois and Wisc show since 1995, as well as a few others.
but I dont think I will fly for the next tour unless the new album is truly epic, which I dont expect. by epic, I mean to the level of Vitalogy or Yield. the live experience will never match the energy of the 93-96 shows that I have heard (only saw Soldier Field myself).
as far as the economy, unless I lose my job, and cant find another or start my own firm, I wont skip shows or albums. I have enough savings to be ok and not skip PJ. I need to cut back on posters anyways b/c they are expensive and I have too many already.Found: Soundgarden Hyde Park DVD (Thank you for the gift!)

in 2003-2004-2006....i traveled all the fuck over...and it was fun...and i had a great time....
but the chances of me doing something like that are 1%......the new album would have to be the second coming of VS. or the second coming of Yield in order for me to even think about traveling for shows....Take me piece by piece.....

Same here... even if the album was epic, I don't see the necessity to see 5 or 6 or 10 shows on a tour. I have plenty of other reasons to travel now which don't include Pearl Jam... especially with my g/f's friends getting married every fuckin yearand now her brother most likely getting a job in Cali, so there's another destination.
Plus, being in Philly, I can most likely see 3 or 4 shows within a couple of hours driving distance if I really wanted toThis is your notice that there is a problem with your signature. Please remove it.

the shows to me in 2006 just seemed to blend into each other....i know they change up the setlists...i know they put on tremendous shows....i know every show is unique........
but after a few shows in 2006....i just got really fucking bored with the whole thing.....
lolla was a great time.....and i was lucky it was in my home town....
and im a liitle older and a little wiser these days....im not dropping $2000-$3000 traveling to see a rock band......its just not going to fucking happen.....Take me piece by piece.....

I'm hoping to spend less than $2000 on all my travels this year. That includes concerts, shows and whatnot. Already spent over $100 for Neil Young tickets, another $200 for Springsteen coming up, tickets to see Rent, airfare to Michigan at least once this summer, PJ shows, and whatever else pops up (baseball, hockey games, whatever). Sooo many better things to do with my money than follow Pearl Jam around the country. This is your notice that there is a problem with your signature. Please remove it.

dont get me wrong.....if Pearl Jam showed up at alpine valley this year for a couple of shows....i would pack up the car...bring my grill...and have one hell of a tailgate party...
but those would be the only shows i would go to...
and that would depend on if they were weekend dates.....i am not wasting vacation days or sick days to go see a rock concert that i have already seen 30 times.....
and i thought by taking the 2008 tour off....and not attending any shows ...i would maybe change my attitude..
i havent......Take me piece by piece.....

I'm with you.. for me the specialness of shows (venues) definitely factors in and when during the week they are. Last tour, we hit MSG 1 after 2 Camden shows and then drove the next morning at 6AM for 16 hours to Michigan. It was a great experience and well worth it but that doesn't mean I need to hit MSG again this year. Shows at the Spectrum this year would be must see. And if they hit Red Rocks, I'd definitely consider getting my ass there, but I can't think of any other places I'd have to travel to see them. Although I know the g/f would be dying to hit Alpine Valley if there were shows there.
I look at it this way, I only have so much disposable income, and I'd rather vary my experiences rather than drop a few grand seeing the same band play a couple of songs I may have never heard live before. I love the live experience of this band but I don't need to experience it 5, 6, or 7 times a tour.. as you said it all starts to blur into one big show and that's not what I want to remember. This is your notice that there is a problem with your signature. it's causing me to think twice about things. a couple of years ago, i would have ordered the super-happy-fantastic deluxe ten resissue within the first minute of availability. but now, i'll settle for the $33 deal.i'm more a fan of popular bands.. like the bee-gees, pearl jam0

I am only doing it if I can use airline miles and hotel points to do it. I will also probably just pick one city and that's it. If they do a 2 night stand somewhere (Boston, Chicago, Toronto, etc.) and it is on a weekend, then that one wins.
Unfortunately, being here in Texas, if I ever want to see them again I have to travel. I just don't see them coming back down here again. They haven't played a show in this state in 5 1/2 fucking years!! And even if they do play here, they will play one show in Dallas and then the nearest big city is 300 miles away anyway.
I don't know. I go back and forth on it. If I have to pay for airfare and hotel, then no. If I can swing that stuff for free, then probably, if I can go to a city where I can get more than one show in.DAL-7/5/98,10/17/00,6/9/03,11/15/13

I have already started to significantly cut back on poster purchases, although that didn't really have anything directly to do with the economy.
As far as traveling to shows - it depends where they tour this year and how good the new album is. But I would guess that I will be taking one trip somewhere that I can't drive to see see a few shows. And then go to anything that I can drive to. So I guess not much of a change there.1996: Toronto 1998: Barrie 2000: Saratoga Springs 2003: Buffalo, Toronto 2005: Kitchener, London, Hamilton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto 2006: Toronto x2, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Gorge #1 2007: London, Dusseldorf, Vic, Lolla 2008: WPB, Tampa, DC, MSG x2, Hartford, Boston x2, Beacon 2009: Toronto, Chicago x2, Seattle x2, LA #3&4, San Diego, Philly x4 2010: Cleveland, Buffalo, Hartford 2011: Montreal, Toronto x2, Hamilton 2012: Missoula 2013: London, Wrigley, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Hartford, Dallas, OKC0 -
the economy and the staate of finances will def affect how many shows I go to next tour.. Well at this stage anyway depending on my finances and the economy.0
