If your work place administered a 4 day work week @ 10 hours a day M-Th would you be for it, or against it? and why?

    Hell yeah, :D

Currently work a rotating roster, work 4 days a week, and loving it at the end of the third rotation how the days fall you get a five days off very 12 weeks, there is currently a "vote" going on to cut how many weeks on each shift in half (two weeks) which would mean over the six weeks i would work 24 days and have 23 off, :D

too bad that i dislike my current position, not very challenging. :(

I've done this before and I absolutely love it! Personally, I tend to work better when I work longer days. I work better later in the day and this way I'll stay late when I'm most productive. Also, it gives me longer stretches of time to focus on big projects. Besides, coming to work well-rested after a long weekend and then knowing you have another long weekend to look forward to is motivating. I feel better about the time I spend at work when I've had enough time at home to deal with everything I need to deal with in my personal life. I know it's the same amount of time at home as working 5 eight-hour days, but with 4 tens you get to have a weekday to go to the bank and doctor's appointments, etc. That's better for the employer because you have to take less days off work for these things. Besides, I'm tired when I get home from an eight-hour day or a ten-hour day regardless, so I'm not accomplishing much at home during the week no matter how much or little time I've spent at work. I'd rather spend more time being productive at work and then have that extra day to be productive at home. I just feel like it makes me happier and more productive all around.

So... uh... does that answer your question, or should I go on? :geek: :)

oh and tell my boss too

4 days on/3 days off just seems more fair and balanced. 2 days off just doesn't feel like enough!

I've found that it's a lot easier for them to guilt me into staying late every day than for them to guilt me into coming in on my days off. I figured since I was working late most days anyway, I may as well get compensated for it!

i had to come in during the holiday break, which sucked a fat one....so i'd have to lie and say i was out of town every single friday. which is fine, i can deal with that :D

I would be for it, but since i work 10 hour days usually does that mean i'll have to work 12 :(

My boss is never satisfied. You get those dirty looks when you leave on time! Leavign at 5pm is frowned upon. you have to put in the extra time and the extra effort.

But all that shit is forgoten come review time.

I'm looking forward to this starting next fall myself. I'm planning on only having one day off per week and 10 hour days each day for a few years. I'm thrilled.

As to the 4-day work week, I'm all for it. Your day is fucked from a 10-hour day anyway, might as well go 8-6/7. It's not like anything gets done when you get home at 5 anyhow. Might as well stay longer and get shit done, then have a full weekday to unwind.
  • Since I typically have two (sometimes three) 10-hour days a week anyway the extra hours wouldn't bother me at all. We actually shut down at noon on wednesdays....weekly newspaper that goes to press wednesday morning....but I would gladly work all day on Wednesday in order to have Friday off. Of course, I would still have to go to a ball game Friday night so it definitely wouldn't work out in a manner that would be pleasing to me
All I have to do is revel in the everyday....then do it again tomorrow

Yay to the 4 day work week-
It gives you that "1 work day" off and allows you to do things that you can't get to during work hours- places that close at 5 or 6 and you are stuck at work or in traffic. Or it gives you the opportunity to work on things for yourself-

  • I usually work 4 days a week. It's much much better. In the long run, it's just a better way to do things.

It's 52 less trips for people that drive, an extra day of free time to do errands. 3 day weekends turn into 4 day weekends. Plus I noticed within myself...I have less of a tendency to use my vacation time, which for my employer, is great since they're not paying for me to be out as often if I feel overwhelmed and need to take a day off...that's what I'll use my Friday for.

Plus it makes my Vegas trips easier. I'll either go Thursday night or take off before the traffic on Friday and not have to worry about the stop and go drive all the way there! :D

I'd be all for it. I'd work three 12 hour days if possible. Once I'm here, I'm here. Plus I have an hour commute - so would save a bunch on gas and tolls. I work a 4 day week during the summer and I'm able to get so much more done, not to mention scheduling doctor appointments, etc.

    Agreed! I already work 3 10/hour days...and then 2 8/hour days.

  • I think it would be great. As it stands, though, my husband works 6 10-hour days. I don't think his workdays could get any longer, lol. That won't last forever, though. It would be wonderful to have him here 3 days a week instead of one!

I once worked for a place that I asked for it to be 4 10-hour work days. Are you kidding me? 4 days of work, 3 days off. It's only 2 extra hours. I was able to keep myself busy during the whole day, and when busy, I didn't notice the extra 2 hours.

Only thing to consider is do you have kids? If so, you will need to see how much extra time you may miss with them. Aside from that, totally do it.

of course, I've also had jobs where I worked consecutive 18 hour days... so I'm able to get thru tough hours too. :)

If your the hours are flexible, you can always start super early and still be home to have quality-kid time, too! My husband gets up about 4 hours before we do, lol, and he is home every day at 5 to eat dinner with us and morph into "Super Dad". :D

Its better than a 5 day work week. In my past life when I used to work my work week was 24 hrs on 72 hrs off with mutual trades pretty much any time you needed off! :D

10 hours a day seems daunting but i think i would be willing to do it.

They're really not that bad at all. You get used to it right away. Plus you actually get more time in the long run.

Just by spending the extra two hours a day, for four days, you get a whole extra day off rather than have another 8 hour day at work.

Plus on top of saving yourself the 8 hours of work for that day, you also save your self the time it takes to wake up each that day before work and get ready, and the time you'd spend on your commute to and from!

Not daunting at all! Put it in the good perspectives and take it that way. :)

  • Due to money issues, we did it this past summer and most of us liked it. We even cheated a bit and did 4 - 9.5 hr days (8-5:30). Having Friday-Sunday off was awesome...

About the only complaint that I did here from a couple co-workers were issues with childcare, and running into conflicts with daycare pickup and drop-off times with the long work days.

That's why my employer gave us the option to do this over the summer - so we could save gas. I thought that was a great idea!

i think i would LOVE it!
funny too, my colleague and i were just discussing this yesterday. we are the only 2 people in our group to do our job, and we could easily do it in 4 days, outside of busy seasons...here 5, 6, 7 days a week.....12, 14, 16 hours a day......... however, i was thinking more along the lines of regular 8 hour days. haha.

i still would be all for it at a 10 hour day, although with my commute it would be a 12.5 hour day. i just would want my husband to work the same schedule. having a monday or friday...hell, even wednesday...would be awesome, a nice break...good day for shopping/errands....but i don't want a day to myself at the expense of daily time with my husband. i know during busy seasons when i work the crazy-sick hours...it's like we never see each other, even if i am home on the weekend, b/c i am just so exhausted. so it definitely is all about balance to me. i know my husband has said his job has been hinting at the possibility. if it happens, i may ask at my employer if it's at all possible. dunno. given the economic climate, i am just so thankful to have a job, and a generous one at that! :D
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow
