    How good is Greendale?

They were selling it for £3 - roughly 6 bucks over here. Was so tempted to get it...

I didn't care for Greendale. It's kind of a concept album, and in my opinion, kind of gets away from Neil's style. I saw a show from the Greendale tour, and I was disappointed. I think it's one of those things where you love it or hate it. I liked Chrome Dreams II much better.

I agree that Chrome Dreams II comes across as a better effort than Greendale.

    Greendale is Neil's Rock opera.

IMO- the track titled "Bandit" is the best track off of Greendale.

A good reason to avoid it... rock operas pretty universally suck!

Any true Neil Young fan needs to listen to Time Fades Away.....

Is that the one right before On the Beach? Wasn't it never released on cd?

never released on cd (not yet anyway). i see it in used record shops on vinyl all the time. it's decent.

to add to the thread, i've always liked:
    On the Beach
    Zuma
    Freedom
    Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
    Live Rust

just get Decade people. it has a ton of great tracks on it.

But Decade also has the shittiest cd sound transfer of all time. It sounds like you're listening through a blanket.

All the albums you listed rule though.

And today I decided that Live at Massey is the best live album of all time.

I'm a big fan of Harvest Moon. Classic Neil songwriting. Great guitars and beautiful harmonies.
  • Fork in the road is pretty good

I am currently listening to 'Rust Never Sleeps', so far I love it and I am up to track 2 ''Thrasher''.

Huge Neil worshiper here, Rust Never Sleeps is my favorite. Soooo many great albums, but yeah, that one's never been unseated for me.
Twenty-ten watch it go to fire!!!
  • For me

    Essential:
    After the gold rush
    tonights the night
    time fades away
    on the beach
    harvest

all have a different vibe and are consistantly great. on the beach is my fav.

    other interesting ones are
Hawks & doves (very underrated and good. first half is soft, second half is country)
Re.act.or (neil sounds frustrated. loose but mechanical sounding crazy horse )
Sleeps with angels (best 90s album)
Prairie Wind (good 00 era soothing album)
    ...The Moon is Rollin' Round....

How come nobody ever mentions Comes a Time? I love that album.
