95? 96? Watch early stuff from PJ and it completely blows you away with the intesity. EVERY member is basically going crazy and owning the stage, now, its about as intense as bingo night at the retirement home. I know they got older but, what happened?

its obvious that shows were crazier, more intense, and heavier back then.

however, to say they have gone soft is craziness. the band has grown and matured musically much more. they are a much better band now. the shows are tighter, longer, have better setlists, and are performed better. yes the early crazy days are AMAZING, but its all a part of the evolution of the band. no code - present has produced unbelievable albums and undeniably the band's greatest tours containing some of their most legendary and epic shows, whether or not people are crowd surfing and ed is jumping off of ledges. i much prefer the creative diverse pj. the passion is WITHOUT A DOUBT still there. its just not expressed in the same way anymore. sorry bro, i think you're dead wrong.

PJ shows are still intense. That was 1992, 16 years ago I'd say they have matured a little since then. Just because Eddie's not stage diving 30 feet down into the crowd doesn't mean they went soft. Also, Roskilde probably has a lot to do with them trying to tone things down a little.

the band matured, and the music matured. you can go crazy playing animal or once in front of a crowd for the first time. it is a little different when you are debuting songs like low light/off he goes.

    First off *sigh*

Honestly, I'd rather be at a show NOW then a show Pre-96.

As it has been said, they've grown up, but Ed also learned how to sing so he wasn't wrecking his throat night after night around 95-96ish if I'm not mistaken and I would think that might have something to do with him not being all nuts and crazy on stage.

I dunno about soft, but the shows I been to up until Gorge 06 and Lolla they still bring a sick energy. Mikey rocks out like a madman still and ed gets into his phases...hell even Jeffs kicked it up compared to like the 00 tour. They were solid that yr but mellow onstage presence. It was a diff. vibe. The 05 and 06 tours even in Canada there was crazy energy at shows like vancouver and toronto, etc.
    so soft? nahh..just diff intensity
Aah, fuck it, I’m just gonna go home, turn on the fuckin’ TV...

"trolling" is a term that people use to describe the activity of coming on a message forum to stir up trouble. Like they post negative comments about the band or songs or whatever or try to start shit with other board members. I'm not saying anyone in this thread is doing that though.

To answer the original posters question, I don't think pj went "soft." I think they simply expended their horizons and branched out musically. That is one reason I love pj, they just create music that they want to, and still go back to their roots at the same time. There are "rocker" songs on every discs they have released. Their music is truly beautiful art.

Trolls aren't as bad as spams, though.

To the OP, I don't think their stage performance is soft, just more mature like others have said.

would you rather PJ be a fucking joke like Metallica?

that is to say, they play exactly the same music to the same audience over 20 years?

they not only got older, they grew up!

does going back to the "early days" mean waiting an hour and a half for them to show up? does it mean taking the chance they might not be in "performance condition"? this is pretty much typical of the band in it's "heyday".

    umm no thanks.

Same song, again in 06 and a massive crowd...
I reckon alot more intense than 92!

these guys aren't 25 any more! i think that has alot to do with onstage antics!
but i think as a whole crowd safety is anot better and you dont see so much crazy shit going on like stage dives or whatever at any show!

The band has softened up over the years, no doubt about that. Eddie went from being a firework display to a statue on stage in 1993/1994. They still play hard though, but definately not as hard as they used to.

I guess it began when the band started to focus on other things beside their music. Eddie's issues with fame, ticketmaster and so on...

i'm the absolute opposite of you on this one... the early stuff makes me cringe with embarrassment... i hate it... they look like drunk 14 year old carnies after 4 hours on a spinning ride.

i like the mellow groove they've got going on... if i want to watch people flailing around on a stage in some testosterone fuelled orgy of long hair then i'll just buy a 70's porn movie.
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

They don't do too bad nowadays.

Actually, EV slowed the frenetic stage routine down around 94.
