Well he did it, Obama just signed an executive order to close git mo with in a year from today.
He also signed an E.O. regarding coheirs interrogation methods, basically stating all military must use the army field manual when an enemy combatant is captured. so what should we do with the prisoners at git mo?
I feel that if our trained interrogators cannot use coheirs methods (waterboarding, loud music, sleep deprivation) it will cost lives.

The way around that is they are going to add additional interrogation methods to the field manual, hopefully aggressive techniques. Maybe they should adopt a policy of don't ask don't tell when it comes to interogation anyway, just look the other way.
  • So it's a bad thing that we don't torture people or hold them indefinitely with no actual charges or accusations?

Do whatever it takes to get the necessary information to keep the country safe. If they are not able to charge them with anything then off course they should let them go.

gitmo is one of many prisons used by intelligence agencies. rendition has been going on all over the world, and they've been shipping suspects (after torturing and drugging them) to prisons in Poland and some in afghanistan. they got a few innocent people who they later released, who then told their story.

a german car salesman was picked up in the middle of the night, sexually assaulted with a billy club, beaten and drugged and shipped off to afghanistan where he was interrogated for weeks. when they realized he didn't know anything they droped him off in some eastern european country, literally off in some countryside. he had to find his way back to germany.

that's one case, there are hundreds. that's what rendition does for you.

so if you're pro-gitmo don't worry, there are other much more secret prisons around the world being used, with much harsher interrogation techniches being used. you can still have your torture and indefinite prison terms and innocent people getting beaten for no reason, relax.

If anything Obama is keeping the basic bush terroism infrastructure in tact. Closing Gtmo is a merely symbolic gesture. While he was a candidate Obama voted for expaned presidential wiretapping powers, which as we all know bush was for. While on this week with George Stephan, Stephie tried to get him to outlaw all interogation techniques not in the Army field manual. He would not commit to this and Obama quoted Cheney and said something to the effect he wants to make sure we know all thats being done before saying we will or won't use a particular technique. Not much behind the scenes will change as the last thing he needs or wants would be another terror attack on US soil.

I think he's right to change this in his first week. This kind of place and the use of torture is not in keeping with the ideal of treating prisoners fairly and humanely. Whether we are worried about these people being a threat or not, we can't allow hidden torture chambers in the US.

Or anywhere. We either adhere to The Geneva Convention or bow out of it.

    [
obviously you don't have any solutions to these problems you would rather slam people
There was no slamming involved. I just genuinely don't think that anyone who says that last sentence, is saying it in all seriousness... and not simply to get a rise out of people ;)

what problems is it that you are seeing?????
I don't think he's familiar with the phrase. It's not a phrase used here. HH, I think you could win the award for most misunderstood person in the board. I've seen posts of yours several times get misinterpreted. You're the female Larry David of Ireland. :D

I was going to say the same thing... I'm not sure he knows what taking the piss means. So I agree, with your first part anyway. Not so much the second.

If you condone torture tactics on 'their' guys... you condone torture tactics on 'OUR' guys.
As for me... I always associate the word 'Torture' with bad guys... like Soviets, Communist Chinese, Vietnamese Jungle prisons, Islamic Terrorists, Nazis and the Catholic Church Middle Ages.
