I also work in IT and this could easily turn into a thread where we laugh at all the stupid IT questions we get throughout the day as it is.
  • IT people unite!

I hate it when I have to explain what alphanumeric means. I mean "Alpha + Numeric" I thought this was self explanatory?
    NERDS!
  • IT also :). Where are all the people whos speakers are broken because their volume is down?

All-in-One printers suck. I'm ashamed I even bought one.

I love any issue that ends with "Turn your computer back on."

    Pop Quiz nerds!

What routing protocol is used to connect via the shortest number of hops?

What routable protocol in the TCP/IP suite creates a connection-less link?

What type of memory requires light to erase it?

What re-writable memory maintains it's data after power-cycling?

What flying creature crashed the first computer?

    What was the first PC?

How much did Microsoft purchase DOS for?

    Bonus Question!
What famous phreaker invented the "blue box"?

    Well that's really good then!

You could probably look most of them up online, I tried to formulate them to make that harder.

A question, I've been thinking about starting a bunch of webpages, I know HTML, a little XML, and basic JavaScript, but is PHP any use? And if so where can I learn it? I also know a little C++ but not enough that it would be useful, if it is at all usable for my purpose.

You don't use C++ for web development. I personally like PHP, it interfaces with MySQL well.

Well, that would be the Non-Volatile memory

What flying creature crashed the first computer?
    Windows :D

    Hi, I am a student ICT-electronics
    might later specialise in networking

nice to meet the 'nerds' on the board :p

Correct! OSPF or Open Shortest Path First

Well, that would be the Non-Volatile memory
Correct! NVRam or Non-Volatile Memory, I would have also accepted EEPROM, Electrically Erasable Programable Read Only Memory

What flying creature crashed the first computer?
    Windows
Incorrect! This creature predates windows by a few billion years.

    Thanks for participating!

Thanks, good initiative, but the first crash was caused by a bug in a computer the size of an entire room

not quite sure about the nature of the bug tho, could've been a fly, I suppose

That's a very very close guess. It was actually a Moth.

"In 1946, when Hopper was released from active duty, she joined the Harvard Faculty at the Computation Laboratory where she continued her work on the Mark II and Mark III. Operators traced an error in the Mark II to a moth trapped in a relay, coining the term bug. This bug was carefully removed and taped to the log book September 9th 1945. Stemming from the first bug, today we call errors or glitch's [sic] in a program a bug. [2]"

    Correct! User Datagram Protocol!

Good stuff, I'm suprised you know the network answers, perhaps you should pursue a career in networking.

Thanks, I've been taking that into serious consideration, seeing how it's my best class and, imo the most interesting one
I simply adore cables and hardware :p, maybe a little backhand programming in Perl

I don't know any Perl, but seriously web development has many more opportunities. My company hires web developers all the time, but hardly ever needs network people. We have about 3 network people to 100 developers.

I love networking too, I went to school for CCNA, I didn't finish the exams but I learned it all anyway. Still, I've been here for almost 9 months waiting for an opening in technology ops and I don't think I will get it if it does open. If I was confident in my JavaScript abilities I could be making $35/hr right now.

    Non-Volatile RAM or EEPROM

What flying creature crashed the first computer?
    A Moth

    What was the first PC?
    MITS Altaire 8800

How much did Microsoft purchase DOS for?
$50,000 USD. Microsoft was later sued by the developer Tim Paterson for $1,000,000 USD.

    Bonus Question!
What famous phreaker invented the "blue box"?
    Al Gilbertsan

I always thought the Woz invented the "blue box" but apparently he just made it famous. Steve Wozniak did invent the first single-board, microprocessor based, microcomputer the Apple I.

Well, yeah, but that's why we learn every aspect of what could be IT.
Going from CCNA (how cool is that) to Multimediatechnologies, to programming, to webtechnology(we're seeing php right now), databases, statistics&quality, ethics, and so on ...

So we're basically ready for anything, once we've graduated(with ccna cert.)... apart from some deeper understanding in the field you will actually work in.

    Thanks for the tip anyway

That's interesting, there are many IT fields, too many to count on your hands, and many people are not able to cross fields. It's good to have that knowledge though.

I have 3 primary areas of interest, Networking (Strongest), Building/Repair (Middle), Programming/Web Development (Weakest).

Just don't ask me to configure Active Directory or set User Permissions.
