CPU trouble

probably should be in the tech forum but no one ever reads anything there.

anyways not sure what is going on but my cpu seems to jump from 80% to 100% anytime i try to do anything. if i go to another webpage, open a program etc. the thing i dont get is my computer has been running nearly everything its running now for a long time and its never been this slow, or froze up. its not spyware or a virus, unless its something nothing detects. im starting to think my cpu is on its death bed but i ran a test on it and it nearly matched the standard benchmark.

anyone have any ideas of what might be going on or what i can do to fix it. should i mess with the priority of the 'processes'? ive never really messed with that part.

i was thinking of getting a better cooling system so i could overclock this computer but with the way its been running it would probably crash using notepad if i did.

What's the process that's taking up the 80-100%? Go to the task manager and just sort them by cpu usage.
  • I used to have that problem with an old computer. I took to taking the side panel off, and vacuuming the fuck out of the fan, every once in a while (while the thing was unplugged, of course). This rather aggressive form of interventionism actually worked, for a while.

Are you running Bittorrent or a p2p program? They can whoop CPU.

have you been looking at porn?

    Esther's here and she's sick?

hi Esther, now we are all going to be sick, thanks

i just remember someone throwing this question at me when i had problems with my laptop...

  • IE and svchost are the big guys. everything else is reasonable. but its just confusing. right now my computer is at 6% with 44 process. if i try running any program it will jump to like 80%, of those 44. most are running in the background but hardly doing anything.

i dont think there is much i can do with IE to cut it back i have most add-ons disabled. and svchost is a windows program so i dont think i can shut that off.

was it the problem? cause porn usually does cause trouble on peoples computers. always found that funny. computers are pretty much porn machines but porn is like the achilles heel. always warned stay away from internet porn but no one listens until their computer crashes.

I'd first go in Windows Services (Start Menu--->Programs--->Admin Tools--->Services) and disable Automatic Updates. Then reboot and see if svchost is still acting up.
  • nothing really changed. svchost runs at maybe 20,000k less but as soon as i open anything the computer still jumps way high in cpu usage. and now i have to deal with that window popping up everytime i restart. since you know what svchost is is it normal to have 4 of them running? only one of them is really taking up much but still.

Yea there should be many running at a time...they're groups of
processes that run together. I have 5 running right now, and one is at
    about 20,000k.

It is normal for the processor to spike when you open something, and
then go back down shortly after. Is that what you're seeing?

What kind of spyware programs are you using? Sometimes they don't pick off everything depending on what your using.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.
  • the spikes are normal but it was never like this. my computer almost always freezes. almost any program gives me the hour glass pointer. it never did that before. if i open something i cant do anything for a few seconds.

my spyware programs that i use often are adaware, spybot, and windows defender. i only run defender in the background the rest i run them about once a week.

i check download.com every once in awhile for new programs and try them but they usually last for about 2 days before i get sick of them.

I'd get the Windows process explorer and see which svchost is running which processes. Look at whatever one is spiking, and see which services run under it. There might be one you can disable.

Also, might wanna check for dust near the fan as previously mentioned.

ill give that a shot. my computer cant be too dusty since i had it opened and everything a few weeks ago.

um where do i open the program from?

You download it from that webpage...it's on the right.

yeah i downloaded and installed. but i cant find where it went or what it did.

You don't install it. It's just a zip file that you unzip, and in there is a .exe that you run.

    no.

then why does it say installing? then when it reaches 100% it closes and thats it. nothing.

Yikes...does it say "installing" when you're trying to unzip the zip file or actually run the .exe inside the zip?

i dont have a zip just the .exe.

    Best answer.

hit ctrl-alt del, click on services or processes tab I believe....sort the list by CPU% and watch which process is hitting the rails,....then terminate (end task) it to see if it resolves. Take note of the exe that's offending and remove or reinstall the app if it's not a system process

If one of your svchost instances is bugging out, you're most likely infected with something.

    Which process is causing it?

already kinda answered this IE and svchost and they dont move much, nothing really does. just when something changes with the computer it comes to a head. thats why its puzzling.

    Did you download this?

did now, wonder what the other thing was then. oh well.
  • Also, just as a test, you might want to disable Windows Defender. I've seen that cause issues like this for whatever reason.

should i turn on spybots little blocker thing or just let my antivirus handle everything?

No, just turn off Defender and see if the spike/freezing still happens after you restart the machine. I'm saying this because Defender processes come under one of the svchost's

reading through this i had a thought.....the hard drive may be failing......probably not but you might want to do a backup before you do much more.....:)

If your processor usage isn't spiking from an errant app, then your HD is fragmented beyond belief.

What speed is your processor? and how much ram do you have?
