just the same old nutty libs on the board-
    owed everything- work for nothing-
  • You don't have to label those who don't agree with you. It makes it sound that you are more concerned with invalidating the person rather than their argument.

Sometimes folks get fired. It isn't always easy to do the firing. Good work. It must have felt good to remove a negative person from your workforce.

It appears that some posters were of the opinion that you were enjoying the pain the firing inflicted on the dishonest employee rather than enjoying the fact that you no longer have to deal with a dishonest employee. IMHO.

I don't believe your reasons for firing the employee.

Stealing from homeless children? What could they possibly own?

I am excited to do it- this person is a real moron and establishing a paper trail has been the main focus of my job for about 3 months.

    See you sucker!
    Good prevails once again!

If he was stealing why did it take you three months to establish your position? I could see if it was a dismissal regarding performance issues taking that long to build your case but theft??? He should have been out the door that day! Please tell me you accomplished more for the homeless in the last three months than building a case to terminate an employee who has been stealing!

You must not supervise anyone or thing.
This is a huge not for profit company- it takes time to build a case against someone- and if they happen to be not white- you need even more of a paper trail.

He was walking out of the program with soap, shampoo, I'm pretty sure he was taking paper, and toner and we were missing oven stuffer roasters and steaks. Hard to prove when the guy works the overnight- we finally got him over the past couple weeks- he started coming in at 2 am and was documenting on his time sheet 12am- we got him with theft of time. We needed him to submit a timesheet with his signature on it with the fale times of arrival.
If it was up to me I would have cut him loose at with the first roll of paper towels he stole- but had to follow policy-
I'm sure he will take it to human rights- the agency will have to pay attorney fee's and other BS-

Oh, and as far as the kids go- we house for 30 days- intensive case management for runaways and homeless- we see alot of ACS abuse cases but we really just provide 72 hour housing for those children.

So yes, we do great work here-

Actually I'm a director of a multinational company so I know a thing or two about hiring and firing. I can tell you if it took three months in our organization to build a case regarding theft the thieve wouldn't be the only person losing their job that day! ;) Did you ever consider putting a closed circuit camera in the area the thieve was stealing the food products? It would have facilitated the process and provided your charity with hard undeniable evidence! The kind of evidence that would eliminate any costly human rights tribunals or wrongful dismissal suits. Think about the money and time that could have been saved and put to better use serving the homeless!

We cant use cameras- it is against HIPPA laws to photograph the children and since they have access to these areas we would have them on film-

believe me- if this could have been done day 1 I would have done it!

Fair enough .....but don't be surprised if this scumbag goes to a human rights tribunal and claims the timesheets were confusing to fill out he did not understand them and it was a clerical error. Do you have sign off procedures in training programs where the employee acknowledges the training they received? This will obviously help if you do.
