House of 1000 Corpses.
Ginger Snaps.
Dead and Breakfast.
The Strangers.
The Orphanage.
Night of the Demons (80's movie, but a Halloween classic).
Wrong Turn.
Dawn of the Dead (remake).
And I can't forget the children classics like Casper and Hocus Pocus!
I've seen House of 1000 Corpses, but I didn't like Zombie's sequel to it- can't remember the name.
I've been wanting to see The Strangers and The Orphanage since they originally came out
"I can't hear you, you're trailing off and did I catch a niner in there? Were you calling from a walkie-talkie?"

The Devil's Rejects was the sequel and I have to say was way better than House of 1000 Corpses. More sinister. The first one was kind of goofy comparatively.
I bought The Thing today, it was just £3. I remember it being a good old fashioned scarer, edge of the seat stuff......I'm gonna make the kids watch it
American Werewolf in London is one of my favorites. It has a good mixture of horror and humor, plus it has the best human to wolf transformation ever.
Suspiria is pretty good.
American Werewolf is one of my favourites, I have the dvd and my son is desperate to see it...but I can't allow him yet, because of the scene in the porno cinema
great movie though.

HAHA. I used to watch this with my dad when I was a child, and when the scene in the porno theatre came on he would fast forward through it.

My father used to do that with the porno theatre scene in Taxi Driver when I was a kid. I was like "yeah Dad, skip the sex part and let me see the people getting their brains blown out, great parenting "
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

yeah, well he's just 11 Jez, I'm sure he's heard about all that stuff, but I don't want to subject him to Brenda Bristols just yet
Atually, that is such a funny scene...
Big tough guy bursts in..."you promised me you'd never do this ever again"
Weedy guy turns to him, away from Brenda ..."I never promised you any such thing"

Hah, I wasn't criticising YOUR parenting, American Werewolf in London is more fantastical, less disturbing in a human way. I'm sure your son would be fine with it but I agree that at 11, maybe it's a good decision not to show him THAT scene. I can imagine it would be uncomfortable as hell for YOU more than damaging for him though
I just mean it's funny the emphasis on what is considered unsuitable for children. I was ALWAYS allowed to watch violence, as far back as I remember. I must have been 7 or 8 the first time I saw Joe Pesci beat and stab Frank Vincent's character in Goodfellas to death, and it never harmed me (so far as I can tell ) but that's SURELY more potentially harmful than something nice and natural like sex?
Having said that, if I had kids I'd be much more comfortable with showing them violence or werewolves and stuff than a scene in a porn cinema.

I'm sure it would make me squirm ...I will maybe just go make a cup of tea when it comes on
you do have a point tho, shows how foolish we really are...I bet in Holland things are much different eh?

I agree that The Devil's Rejects is the better film, but it's not a very Halloweeny type of movie. It's gritty and disturbing, but I think House of 1000 Corpses has the right atmosphere for a fun and crazy Halloween flick
i was the poor kid who screamed the house down when a clown went near me at the show, or the circus - and im still kinda scared of them
wearwolves when i was a teenager ... the idea of that really freaked me
but really - you just never get that scarey jumpy too scared to go to sleep feeling you used to get when you were 16 with the lights out in front of the latest scarey flick ... they just cant pull them off nowdays ... or perhaps its just another rip off part of growing up
well, last Halloween my son and I watched "Night of The Living Dead" on Fearnet and I know it is old as hell but it still scares the hell out of me. And we both noticed that there were evidently a lot of people in that area who were buried in jean jackets. So funny.
I like the Saw movies. We had a Saw marathon here last spring and watched all of them. Scary but good because even though the guy was a nut, his message about his cancer diagnosis was pretty deep and true, (I can imagine). I saw they have a new one coming out and that is cool.
I started watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre and could not watch it after the part with the cellophane and the saw..........oh my ........even thinking about it gives me the creeps..........
are you into gore??
Baby, You Wouldn't Last a Minute on The Creek......
Together we will float like angels.........
In the moment that you left the room, the album started skipping, goodbye to beauty shared with the ones that you love.........
I hear the new Mist with Tom Jane is pretty good, but I haven't seen it.
I know you said no oldies, but I just picked up The Thing (John Carpenter's 1982-ish, starring Kurt Russell) on Blu Ray and that movie is great.
I forgot to mention Shaun of the Dead. It's not exactly scary, it's more of a comedy (although it kinda turns into a scary tragedy near the end), but it's a great Halloween movie.

That is all.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
I've always been a fan of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Gary Oldman is fantastic as Dracula. Seven is not a bad idea if you are looking for suspense. I also thought Stir of Echoes was somewhat creepy.

+1
The old Hammer movies, while not exactly scary, are classic too. really drawn out & definitive style, camp as it gets.

That movie doesn't do justice to the book. IT and The Stand are 2 Stephen King books everyone should read.
I've been wanting to see The Strangers and The Orphanage since they originally came out
