Anyone have any good, scary, suspense-filled, edge-of-your-seat movies that they could recommend to watch on Halloween?

I'm looking for newer movies. We've seen all the classics- The Shinning and Halloween, two of my favorites.

people under the stairs - it's not that scary but it has a lot of suspense in it...
what is essential is invisible to the eye

    apparently, 07162056 is THE date...
  • tough to beat John Carpenter's original "Halloween". It's the original slasher.

  • that newish Liv Tyler movie "The Strangers" was pretty good. I don't know if its out on video yet though. It was based on true events too.

EDIT: I just looked it up, it comes to DVD on the 21st.

Do you prefer gory (sp?) films or ones with more suspense?

The Saw films are good gory ones

Groundskeeper Willie: You've got The Shinning.
    Bart: You mean "Shining".
Groundskeeper Willie: Ssh! You wanna get sued?

I know it's not too recent, but I love watching Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow (with Johnny Depp) around Halloween. And I know most people hate it, but I sometimes watch Blair Witch Project too.

Check out High Tension. It is a French film with subtitles but it's out on DVD. Lots of suspene, gore and a surprise ending. perfect for halloween. Also, I really liked the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake and it's prequel.

Yes, thank you on Alien - scariest movie ever made IMO.

But "The Shinning" was actually the Simpsons parody from one of the Treehouse of Horror eps...maybe the best one..."No beer and no TV make Homer go something something..."

I was just thinking about good scary movies the other day.

Just watched "The Descent," which is pretty new. Not a great movie but there were a couple of decent jolts.

After Alien, the original Halloween. I always thought The Blair Witch Project, The Exorcist, and The Omen were all very nice and creepy....

    Ginger Snaps.
    Dead and Breakfast.
    The Strangers.
    The Orphanage.
Night of the Demons (80's movie, but a Halloween classic).
    Wrong Turn.
    Dawn of the Dead (remake).

The Ring scared the crap out of me!
Ju-On scared me but I think I am over it now.
My kids really like Grave Dancers. It's one of the 8 movies to die for, most are lame, but that one is good!
Ok they are telling me Unrest is good too, but I don't remember it. It's another of the 8 movies to die for.

    Old ones
Trilogy of Terror scared to fuck out of me! Just the last one, with the little demon statue that comes to life. I saw that when I was in like first grade. I was traumatized!
Another old one that scared me is Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark(I think) Kim Darby is in it. Another one I saw as a kid and was afraid to go to bed.

Thats one I saw when I was young and it stayed with me too. Karen Black getting chased by that doll is just wacky. The knife scene in that is awesome. I believe it was cutting out of the suitcase? Forget exactly but good suspense for sure.

Another movie, not so scary but worth a watch cause its "off" is Four Rooms

Don't read too much on this page, it will give it all away and you tube takes all the fun out of the whole segment.

The one with Antonio Bandaras is my fav. but they are all good!!

  • I saw Hostel part 2 the other day, it was better than I was expecting (I hadn't seen the first one). There's one truly horrific scene in the middle, but the rest is more built round suspense.

The Shinning? A documentary on Northern Irish paramilitary punishment beatings?

    Scary as fuck.

The first one isn't scary per se but it does have some pretty gross scenes, one involving a blowtorch and an eyeball.

Not a very good film. I hear the sequel is better. The first is essentially the same film as Euro Trip for the first hour, just fratboys looking for drugs and sex. It all seems a bit cheap.
