Johnny Depp has lost his credibility a bit with POTC and its now endless franchise. I was trying to think about actors who have never done sequals and I think the only ones who get maximum respect from me are Nicholson (no sequals?) and Russell Crowe. Now, I know RC is a bit of a tricky character off screen, but his film portfolio without sequals is phenomenal:

A good year
Gladiator
The Silver Brumby
Master and commander
A beautiful mind
LA confidential
3:10 to Yuma
and a host of others

I'm sure sequals were penned or conceived for loads of his films, but he seems to be one of the only actors in the world with the balls and integrity to now go back just for the money. Kudos.

Any others?

Not all sequels are bad though. Does Pacino not get your respect because he made the Godfather pt II? (yes, I know, some would say everyone involved jumped the shark with pt III but I like it)

Good shout, he's always taken difficult roles and has worked his way up his own way. My Left Foot, The Boxer and ..Launderette could all have been career killers, but the took the roles and made them all amazing films.

i think the dirty harry movies are sequels....not technically but it's the same character with similar story lines....like the bond movies :)

I respect Pacino, but his list of bad films is starting to eclipse the good.

    Devils Advocate
    SimONE
    Insomnia
    and others

Does Oceans 13 count as a sequal even though he wasn't in the first 2?

Oh sure, he's made some horrible films, it's just the only time he ever appeared in a "franchise", it was a masterpiece :)

I'm not counting Oceans 13 since, as you say, he was only in that one and not the other 2.

Meryl Streep good? Come on, she's only got 15 Oscar nominations, I won't respect her until she makes it 20 :)

Point taken, the Godfather trilogy is great.

I'm not saying I don't respect actors who've done sequals BTW, I just think it is interesting how few actors manage a whole career without one.

I think a Master and Commander trilogy would be wonderful, but RC apparently won't go back to the role
