Sex & The City (TV Show)

Was watching this show with my girlfriend the other day and couldn't help but thinking that Sarah Jessica Parker is WAY overrated and shouldn't have been the lead in this series.

I'm not judging or anything. It's just IMO she doesn't have the character or the right looks to be the heroine of a TV show. She's known as this fashion icon or whatever but to me she looked very odd and funny in all those mini-skirts or EXTREMELY SHORT (for her age and figure) dresses with outrageous bows. Kim Cattrall would’ve been a better choice given of course she wouldn’t play this sex-obsessed psycho.

I haven't really watched it in US but I was kind of surprised to hear f-words and so many synonyms for male genitalia. Was disarming really.

I'm sure I'll be under heavy fire from female fans over here but screw it, it's just something that was on my mind.

P.S. The show gets so boring after 3-4 episodes watched one by one. I wonder if NY is really filled with so many freaks as shown here.

I think that's why SJP was a good choice for the lead...she's not classically beautiful...it seemed to make it more real. I think the show struck a chord with a lot of fans because just like seinfeld...so many of the episodes really relate to real life (an exaggerated version, of course). I can see why a lot of guys wouldn't like it though...it's very disarming in a lot of ways. My brother HATES it. It was shown on cable - that's the only reason the curses, nudity, etc. were able to air on tv in the US. There's a watered down version airing on regular tv now...I haven't seen it, but can't imagine it would be quite as funny. And hey! Nothing wrong with a short girl wearing cute dresses :p

A watered-down version, heh? Why's have to be also a lighter version of everything in US? Everything's politically correct now)))

God, I hate it. It wouldn't prevent kids from doing bad things anyway because we all know that stolen pleasures are sweetest.

I agree. It's ridiculous...and it's not like kids aren't already aware of all those things anyway. That's why I haven't bothered to watch it. I just imagine it would have to be so heavily edited it would lose the whole storyline

Girls seem to dig the show so I just wanted to see what the fuss was all about.

    What's wrong with that?

That is why you didn't like it.
Because it is a girl's show.
And you are being kind of funny in that you are not judging, but then saying SJP was totally wrong and you don't know why she is considered a fashion icon.
Then you say you are disarmed about all of the words for the male genetalia and then you say it is of no use to water down the us tv version.
It is not watered down..you are just not seeing that genetalia. Or hearing about it.

The version that I was watching was not watered-down. It was just freaky eating something and listening to Samantha telling what she likes about a blow-job.

Phew! Well just be happy you're not the one down there doing it...to quote Samantha "they call it a 'job' for a reason" ;)

This is clearly a joke right? SJP rules and is the perfect choice for Carrie, she has great (if a little unusual) fashion, she is great looking and is a little odd to look at also, she is strong yet vulnerable at the same time, what more can ya want from a lead in a show like this! :D

I read that Kim Cattrall was originally picked to play Carrie. Personally, I can't picture her in that role at all. SJP is perfect in my opinion. I love that show :D

I have watched a few epiosdes with my girlfriend ;) I think its harmless but yes some things in the show are very disarming. Isn't this the ultimate drama/soap for females?

It's def a show when watching it with my girl that it wears on me quickly maybe because it puts guys in such a bad light time and time again. Or highlights what we do wrong as a gender in relation to girls and dating/relationships.
I'm just flying around the other side of the world to say I love you

Sha la la la i'm in love with a jersey girl

I love you forever and forever :)

Right on the money! Plus the guys' flaws are all similar and start to get on your nerves pretty quickly.

IMO Problems in relationships are better depicted in Friends. Oh is it just me or all the heroines are real sluts?

I mean they all got through a bunch of guys throughout the series. Don't get me wrong, I'm just from another country which is so much different from US in terms of relationships. So naturally some things seem weird to me like, for example, the fact that the all have had a LOT of boyfriends before settling down.

Of course all those guys they rejected in the long run didn't satisfy some of their standards wich is why they were dumped. But then again what's with Mr. Big (not a fan so seriously having trouble getting why he has such a nickname). They've been on and off for quite awhile. He just wasn't ready to commit or something?

Where are you from? Maybe it doesn't translate well?

Her fashion was fantastic and she is the perfect Carrie. She IS Carrie, she owns that role and she is fierce and fantastic

    And the show was amazing.

I dunno it's just her voice also adds up to her 15-year old image (I mean when she wears reall short skirts or some crazy-ass yellow pantyhose).

I didn't say people in general were freaks just some small percentage which was shown quite often in Sex. I got the impression from the show that NY is more like Vegas...

Then again maybe it's the issue with cultural differences.

well yes but then don't criticize something you don't understand. NYC is NOTHING like Las Vegas. I'm biased b/c I live here but I think it's the greatest city in the entire world.

If she is considered an icon, why did Gap drop her as the spokesmodel in....oh about 6 months I think?

It's not weird in the U.S. for women to have many boyfriends. You have to pick the right one, you can't settle.

Big is so nicknamed for his... anatomy.

I don't know if I remember the whole thing but I think they broke up initially b/c of his committment issues, but then he married somebody else (Natasha), and then he cheated on Natasha with Carrie (which she felt horrible about herself for doing)

I think then he moved to California?

There might be more to it than that but I can't remember right now.

and then Carrie got with, actually a Russian guy! She called him "The Russian."
Baryshnikov played him on the show. His character was called Petrovsky. Then Carrie was moving to Paris with "The Russian," and Big wanted to get her back but she told him it was too late

and then Big went to Paris to find her but Petrovsky wasn't treating her right
and they found each other in Paris

and Big told Carrie she was "The One," and that's how the series ended.

In the movie that just came out here-it is set 5 yrs after that and they were still dating. His real first name is John.
