I'm starting college this fall too at Loyola University Chicago. Actually very soon- August 20th is my first day. Unfortunately I'll miss out on all the getting to know your floor festivities because I'll be seeing Eddie Vedder 2 nights in a row:D
I'm rooming with a friend from home, I've heard a lot of bad stories about people who did that and ended up hating eachother, but I think it'll be ok.
Oh boy!
My first year, it was a random girl - She turned out to be a lesbian (which is fine by me) but she'd always ask if we could cuddle at night..
Second semester, I moved down the hall with my friend who was a senior. She was crazy, and she weighed 88lbs, and was saving all her money for lipo.. She also sold oxycodone out of our room!
Second year, I had a roommate, but she got too drunk all the time, and failed out of school asap
Second semester senior year, I lived with one of my sorority sisters in the dorms
Third year I lived in my sorority house - which was torture. 15 girls, and one bathroom. It was purely evil, but it was one big party. I actually left the sorority in the beginning of the year, but since we had a lease with a real estate agent, I couldn't break my lease.. so it was very trying.
4th year I lived with my boyfriend of the time, who is now my husband. He was the best roommate of the bunch

Loyola is a great school! Are you in Roger's Park, or downtown?? I used to live very close to Loyola.. And, I'm pretty close still.. Welcome to Chicago!
so i'm starting my first year at college in about... 25 days or so and i still haven't found out who i'm living with. apparently i'm supposed to hear by the end of this week, but since it's on my mind... what were your college roommates like?! share your stories - the good, the bad, the humorous!!
Great post! I haven't thought about this in quite some time.
Freshmen year.... awww man, you are going to have so much f'ing fun! Remember one thing, one thing only.... Go to every class. You can be hungover as hell. You can be half asleep. You don't need to pay attention. But, go. I guarantee you will atleast get a C.
Anyway, I had two freshmen year roommates because the dorm I was in was so full. However, we got a pretty cool room that was renovated in the basement of the dorm. I lived with a highschool friend of mine and this nerd that I didn't know before college. The nerd was just a big dork. He reminded me of Grimace from McDonald land. I never could have pictured myself being even friendly with him when I first met him. He was a good guy, however. we didn't hang out in the same circles ever after freshmen year, but I always said hi and talked to him because he was a really nice person. More ironically, my highschool friend turned all religious. He turned out to be a crazy dude. I'd come home from class and he'd be watching EWTN highlighting the bible. I could go on, but he turned crazy. He was heavy into booze in highschool, I don't know what happened in college. But, anyway, he left mid-way through freshmen year. Soon, after I got a new third roommate, who was even more crazy. He came in with one bag (plastic) full of clothes. He had a pillow with no cover and two sheets to sleep on. No comforter. Dude was insane. He use to sit on the bed and have a red straw in his hand. He'd twirl it. He'd stare at the twirling straw for hours. He would also do this as he walked through campus.
Long story short, out of all the whack jobs I met... that guy on the first day that I judged as being a nerd, turned out to be the coolest. Goes to show you, that you never know and that I'm a judgemental F*ck.

Thank you, I'm excited about it:) I really like Loyola's campus and Chicago. I'm in Roger's Park for now, I might end up up going downtown my 3rd or 4th year.

Great! We'll have to meet up sometime! I'll be in school too.. for Grad school, at Depaul in Lincoln Park.
i'll be in new york city!! yep! 21st floor out of 50-something. we don't have a balcony... which i guess is a good thing, because college students + drunk & really high up = potentially disastrous.
we can complain about all our first year troubles here on the board. i'm looking forward to it hahahaha.
yeah, I figured there wouldn't be a balcony. that's cool that you're going to live in nyc though, my sister went to Columbia there, and when I visited I really liked it. (I got rejected from Columbia though, fuckers)... anyway, good luck in college. I hope I don't end up having first year troubles though

Haha good story! I'm going to keep that in mind, i'll be sure not to judge too quickly. I will enjoy college! I'm nervous as hell though!

I'm so jealous...that summer before college is the best time ever. I was sooo nervous/excited...I was the last one of my high school friends to leave too- it was torture!

I'm last to leave! But my last week here i'm getting my wisdom teeth out. So... it works. Hahaa
shows up first day and puts down a 10-pack of copenhagen....i didn't know anybody who dipped so this was a new experience
we were matched ok in that we were both slobs and liked to drink so we got along well there
he liked to fall asleep to music...fine so do i....but not to metallica's ...and justice for all  EVERY NIGHT!!!!
was always a heavy drinker but when he came back from thanksgiving break he told me his girlfriend killed herself because of him.....he then became a pro drinker and very depressed....he was a fighter and i had to break up numerous fights he got into....one night i watched him down a fifth of cuervo in less than a minute....i think this was the same night he then went out into the neighborhood around campus and proceeded to get into a fight with 5 or 6 guys
he was a chronic liar....he told these grand stories about the things he did in high school yet when i talked to some people that went to the same school that also were in my class, they said he was full of shit
What's the story with RA's? I don't really know what to expect with them. My brother said his was apathetic but other people say they're assholes.
totally depends on the school. at my school we didn't have any rules about drinking or drugs or anything so RAs were just there to help people identify resources on campus like health, security, etc. and organize things for the dorm. We also had special resident advisors for first years (I was one!) and we were there for pretty much the same stuff and help the first years get adjusted and whatnot (and hand out condoms-seriously that was like my biggest job). No policing involved. I've heard of other schools that are the complete opposite though. Usually bigger schools have more strict RAs for obvious reasons.
What's the story with RA's? I don't really know what to expect with them. My brother said his was apathetic but other people say they're assholes.
It really just depends on the individual. My freshman RA was cool as hell. He was a senior doing pre-law, but he didn't give a fuck about anything. My dorm was the no drugs (of course), no alcohol, and no tobacco dorm, but he would organize floor wide parties and such. His motto was as long as you got it to your room (which was half the battle anyway) and would share with him if he happened to walk in on a party, that he didn't care and to have fun.
Sophomore year was a lot different. That was a co-ed floor and she was a stickler for the rules. Partly because she was an exchange student from Iowa State and partly because she was a goody-goody. Within the first week she busted 4 or 5 rooms for underage alcohol. It became a fairly normal thing for her to make a bust every 2 or 3 weeks. She never busted me or my suitemates for anything, although I'm sure we came close as me and the two guys in the adjoining suite would drink and smoke pot a lot.
Generally speaking, if you get someone who is doing it for free room and board, the RA should be pretty cool. If it's someone who is doing it to put on a resume or likes a power trip, watch your back.

Some RAs are really cool and turn a blinds eye. I have even had ones that would drink with me when I was underage, but some are wicked dorks and get these power trip ego control freak attitudes thinking they are the shit. These dueschbags will write you up for anything.
Out of the Blue and Into the Black................Uncle Neil Philly 08 here I come!!!!
Moving into my own house with friends next year. It's going to be great.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

For sure Depaul is a great school too, I have a friend going there for music.
dude if i was a freshman and read your stories, i'd think twice about living in the dorms...
and I just wanted to prepare them for the worst case scenario
Haha nah. It's all good. What are the chances of me getting a roommate that happens to be like those in all the disaster stories combined? Slim
I just don't want someone who loves country music.
they put you in with an upperclassman? that's unusual.
I think she's the only junior on the floor.
