That's a horrible comparision. Maybe Mark Prior from 2003. But he's been far more reliable than Mark Prior in the last 3 years.
He's healthy now, and that's all that matters.
Its not THAT far off. Both have/had awesome potential, both have/had been on the DL way too many fucking times. Harden has six trips to the DL in 6yrs, and wasn't one of them just like a month ago? Certainly at least he's pitched in the majors the last few years unlike Prior, but Harden staying healthy is a MAJOR concern of mine. When he pitches, he is awesome, but gotta keep him healthy no question.
That said, even with the injury risk, Cubs didn't have to give up jack to get him. Gallagher was fine and good, but to get a guy of Harden's caliber you've got to let at least 1 starting pitcher go in return. I'm just surprised it was only one. AND we got Chad Gaudin in return who can make an immediate impact in solidifying the bullpen. So even if Gallagher-Gaudin is a wash, they still only had to drop Matt Murton, Eric Patterson, and a minor league catcher hitting 215 to get Harden!
Murton had shown an ability to hit for average at the major league level, I think 297 his rookie campaign. But he can't hit for power, is nothing special in the field, and isn't too quick either. Patterson, I'm glad to get rid of, if only to no longer have anyone from his family associated with the Cubs. His brother was a huge bust on the Cubs, and stuck around way too fucking long. And I feared Eric would be more of the same. He's got the tools, but until he learns to take a walk and catch a flyball (if he's playing OF anyways), he won't do jack in the majors.

A- for Jim Hendry
No doubt. But the fact is that Prior is DONE. Like for real DONE. While Harden is coming off what seems to be his best season ina while in terms of durability.
No question that health is an issue, but it seems like this is the season where maybe he can manage.

Definitely man, Prior is, and has been, done for awhile. So sad, he had so much potential. I thought Wood was finished too, but he really resurrected his career as the closer. Props to Lou for making that move and Demp to the rotation, neither I thought would work, both have been huge in helping the Cubs have the NL lead.
But yeah, still, Harden's injuries scares me. Even more.....working under Larry Rothchild. Hopefully he doesn't fuck up his shit too much!
wow. I was shocked to hear about this, even though rumors were out there for a while. I can't say much about the deal, as I don't know anything about the package the A's got back. Billy Beane usually does very well with these trades. time will tell. Just look at getting haren for Mulder. too bad he then had to flip haren a few years later. Anyway, I really like the trade for the Cubs. If harden wasn't such an injury risk, I'd love it for them. when is his contract up? this isn't a "rental" is it?
By the way, I'm a Yankee fan, and I love to see teams like the Cubs and the Brewers getting involved in these deals, and being aggressive. It makes me kinda sick when a player like this is available, and it's always either the yankees, The Red Sox, or The Mets, with one or 2 fliers like the Dodgers or the Angels involved
that's my argument for CC being a better trade than Harden, though both have struggled in the playoffs.
I would rather have CC than Harden........But I also think the Cubs gave up a LOT less to get Harden than the Brewers did to rent CC for a few months. Cubs also got Gaudin in the deal as well, so even if Harden does go on the DL its still not a complete loss. Granted the Brewers could get compensated with 2 1st round picks in the draft but still. Patterson and Murton are shit.
I was completely shocked when I got home yesterday and saw the breaking news of this deal scroll across ESPN. This is a HUGE move for the Cubs. If Harden stays healthy, the Cubs are the clear favorites in the NL, imo. But that's a big IF. Was at the Sox game Sunday and watched Harden get beat. His control wasn't all there and he only made it through 5. Then I read in today's paper that there has been talk that his velocity is down a little bit. Could be a major call for concern, or he's just had a few rough outings and with more run support he'll be fine. We'll see.
I was more shocked by what little the Cubs had to give up to get him. Billy Beane is a genius, so maybe he knows something we don't...
Either way, I agree with most of you that the Brewers and Cubs will take Division/WC, in either order. But I wouldn't count out the Cards just yet, they're getting some big pitchers off the DL. Will be a good race for the rest of the year.

You mean this season? B/c he only started a total of 13 games in all of 2006 and 2007 combined. He hasn't pitched a full season since 2004. I agree, he's awesome when healthy, but there's not much durability to him.
He floated back down 'cause he wanted to share, his key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere.

I've been thinking the same thing. It seemed a little TOO easy for the Cubs to get Harden. My other thought is that Billy Bean wanted to be the big reason why the Cubs won.
