My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends

From what i've heard he and jagr collided on a line change and jagr's elbow hit alexi's chest. Not positive how true this is, but it is the story that is going around.

Very, very sorry to learn of this. Freak accident or not, one never expects something like this to occur when you're young, strong and healthy. RIP Cherepanov.

  • tragic stuff. apparently the defribilators didn't work and the ambulance had already left and had to be called back ... how does that happen?

I read a couple places that Jagr was standing over Cherepanov, crying, yelling at him to "Wake up!" Absolutely devastating. It hasn't been that long since the hockey world lost Luc Bourdon at too young an age. Like Bourdon, this kid was one hell of a talent. It's amazing to me that after Jiri Fischer, any rink, anywhere in the world doesn't have working portable defibrilators rinkside. Very, very sad.

How horrible. I couldn't believe this story. At first I thought it was some kind of prank by a Devils fan or something.

    :(:(

So young. Too young. What a terrible incident.

Alexi's family and Jaromir Jagr must be absolutely devestated.

Prayers to Alexi, His Family and to Jaromir Jagr.

    Cherepanov Tragedy
Ranger draftee Alexei Cherepanov tragically died during his club's game in Russia tonight, according to various sources confirmed by an announcement by the Rangers. Initial unconfirmed reports say that the collision took place during a shift change with former Ranger Jaromir Jagr, who was distraught as his young protege collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. But Omsk coach Reg Fleming told TSN.ca that Cherepanov collapsed on the bench and that he could not connect it to any specific event that happened during the game. Problems getting an ambulance and working defibrillator appear to have contributed to the problem. Our deepest sympathies to the young man's family, friends, and teammates.

Prospect Cherepanov Passes Away at 19 Young Russian forward was team's No. 1 pick in 2007Oct 13, 2008, 3:54 PM EDT New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather regretfully announced today that forward Alexei Cherepanov passed away during a game in Russia on Monday evening. Cherepanov was 19 years old.

    Alexei Cherepanov
“We are extremely saddened by the tragic passing of Alexei,” said Sather. “On behalf of the New York Rangers organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Alexei was an intelligent, energetic young man, with tremendous talent and an extremely bright future.”
Cherepanov appeared in 14 games with Avangard Omsk of the Continental Hockey League (KHL) this season, registering seven goals and five assists for 12 points. He ranked second on the team in goals (seven) and fourth in points (12). He also ranked third on the team with a 24.1% shooting percentage.

The 6-1, 187-pounder appeared in 106 career Russian Super League (RSL)/KHL matches with Avangard Omsk, collecting 40 goals and 29 assists for 69 points, along with 61 penalty minutes. Last season, Cherepanov established a career-high in assists (13) while finishing fourth on the club in points (28). In 2006-07, he set the RSL record for most goals by a rookie (18), eclipsing Pavel Bure’s mark (17) set in 1988-89 with the Red Army (CSKA Moscow).

With 29 points in his first season with Omsk, Cherepanov recorded more points than Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin, Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin and Atlanta’s Ilya Kovalchuk each tallied in their first RSL season.

Internationally, Cherepanov represented Team Russia in several elite tournaments. Most recently, he helped lead Russia to a Bronze Medal in the 2008 U-20 World Junior Championships, tallying three goals and three assists for six points and a plus-three rating in six games. In 2007, Cherepanov earned Top Forward honors by the Directorate and was selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2007 U-20 World Junior Championships, where he led all players in scoring with eight points (five goals and three assists) in six games and helped Team Russia capture a Silver Medal.

The Barnaul, Russia native was originally the Rangers’ first round choice, 17th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

So tragic on all involved directly and indirectly.

Hey, I was checking in on a Rangers forum that gets a lot of Devils fans posting, in there. And the initial post was by a Devils fan. That's why I was a little wary of the post. My comment wasn't meant as a shot at Devils fans, but just a brief account of how I first found out about this. I guess I should have elaborated.

A nice showcase of the kid's skills. Kovalchuk-like release. The Rangers held a moment of silence before the game, though Sam and Joe didn't mention it in their open, which was weird.

So sad. We lost a nephew at only 16 years old two Summers ago from the same thing. He was also a Hockey player for his school and a town league. I feel so bad for the parents, nothing more tragic then losing your child.

  • Damn, this kid had a bright future. So sad, him and bourdon.
And that's just another reason why any nhl player who bolts the league for russia is crazy.(talking about jagr not cherapanov who is there as an nhl prospect) Not having an ambulance is just irresponsible.

Sounds like more could have been done to save him... but this kind of tragedy can happen to anyone, at any level, if playing sports with a bad heart (assuming that's what it was).
It happened last season at the rink I play at... a guy in his early 40's died on the bench during the game before ours...I found out a week later that it was a former co-worker...he had five kids :(

    RIP Alexie
  • i still cant believe this happened. hes my age and granted i dont play any sports anymore, it just proves to never take anything for granted
    MSG II 6/25/08
  • wow. how crazy and creepy is it that Jagr is involved?
  • just saw the story on sportsnet. too early and end for such a bright young man. i'm sure we all feel for his friends and family.
  • pretextpretext Posts: 1,294
there's now video of him being treated and carried off the bench - no stretcher. Jagr's standing over him most of the time. I can post the link, but thought it might be in morbid bad taste. it definitely underscores the lack of medical sophisitcation/technology that may have saved the kid's life if present.
a day later, i still can't quite believe this.
