Mine were fucked up for a lot of the last few weeks. I've settled into a pattern of sleeping from around 7am till noon. Which is weird. :o

It seems to me, from my extensive self experimentation  you can very easily get yourself into an all new, not so great sleeping pattern without much effort at all.

My understanding is to get things back to a more acceptable routine, you need to be vigilant about sleep times, going at the same time regularly each night and staying in bed regardless of if you sleep or not for the required amount of time until you do sleep through. Least that's what I have to do. AND if I do wake up and still feel like crap and not well rested, which is the norm now really, I just get on with the day and go to bed at the correct time again that night and hope that it will eventually all pan out in the end. So far it's not going so well. :o

The worst part is, I like this pattern. It works for me. I'm just in the wrong time zone for it to be a workable situation. :(

Yeah, well the old straddling time zones trick can totally mess with your sleep!!! I totally understand. :) Of course, I have absolutely no answers! :o:D

I'm sure I'll have fun figuring it out! Maybe I can work out a way of sleeping with my eyes open. :D (Or at least buy one of those trick pairs of glasses) :p

Well you could invest in a real comfy computer chair and put your jammies on before you sit down, a rug helps, and just have little mini sleeps in between typing. :D I do that all the time! :D Usually when I wake up I discover I've got a drama on my hands because of the foot in mouth disease that comes with typing half asleep, but meh, whaddya gonna do? :D

ooh! Maybe I could put a disclaimer in my sig for those times? :p

Nah, forget the disclaimer - it's more fun to deal with the fallout when it inevitably crashes down around your elbows. :D

I actually do sometimes turn the chair around 90 degrees, lean back against the wall, and "rest my eyes". :p Of course, I'm doing this in a hard, wooden dining room chair, so I have irreparable back problems now. :D

I've been a morning person most of my life, but for a long while now I have this huge problem that I can't get myself out of bed in the morning! I need to get up around 6:30, but I'll usually just ignor my alarm and go back to sleep until 8:30 or 9! luckily I have a job with a flexible schedule, so getting in at 9:30, 10 is acceptable, but I need to work out, eat breakfast, and have a normal, healthy morning. As it is right now, I skip working out, skip eating breakfast, sometimes skip a shower, throw wrinkled clothes together, and rush to work, where I feel weird for the rest of the day...

I go to bed sometime between 10 and 11:30 each night (I used to try to be in bed by 10 every night, but the doctor advised not trying to go to sleep until you feel tired). I sleep pretty well throughout the night. I moved the alarm clock across the room (but the room is really small so it doesn't help much). I've tried feng shui, I've gone to a doctor, I've gone to a psychologist, I've done everything they suggested...I still have some kind of mental block.

I've posted for advice on this on other message boards, but given the wide range of topics here I thought I'd give it a shot. Has anyone overcome a problem like this in the past? What have you done?

A friend of mine gave me a few techniques years ago, which I have found useful, when I remember to do them and I've picked up a few along the way myself.

Make sure you wind down properly before you go to bed.
You need to make your environment and the last things you do before you go to sleep, quiet, calm and peaceful. So a good hour before you go to bed, make sure you have done everything you need to do to end the day, put out any clothes and things for the morning. Turn the lights down, have a nice warm shower, some hot milk and just relax, don't over stimulate yourself before bed. When you go to bed, make sure you are warm but not too warm. That the tv isn't on, or the radio. Turn the light out as soon as you get into bed and just focus on your breathing.

If you are having trouble going off to sleep, just keep trying to relax and focus on your breathing and relaxing your muscles. I often recite a mantra in my head about what time I want to get up. Over and over, quietly but firmly. It's so boring it usually puts me to sleep. :D

In the morning, when I have to get up, I make sure there's an alarm clock, a truly annoying sounding LOUD second alarm clock somewhere nearby that is set for 15 minutes after the first one goes off. I put this alarm clock a good distance from the bed so I am FORCED to get out of the bed to turn it off. I usually put it somewhere on the path to the bathroom so that in my confused state I can turn it off and keep heading for the shower. Once I'm in the shower I usually wake up pretty quickly but just in case, I've laid everything out for the next day the night before so I can just do it on automatic pilot. I would joke often at work that even though I was sitting there at 8am, fully clothed, breakfasted and clearly had managed to get myself there, my brain doesn't wake up until 11am. :D

Good luck with it. It's not fun.

Oh I need them! The elbows! :D For my tai kwon do style solution to the fallout. :p

Kicking the living shit out of your PC solves nothing, Jeanie. We've been through this. :p

I get that when I'm in early morning college lectures, or afternoon college lectures - I'm just sorta sitting there, then suddenly, my head is REALLY FUCKING HEAVY, and then it's 30 minutes later, and the hall is empty. :D

Oh I hate that!! I've had times when my sleep patterns have been so out of wack I've fallen asleep in theatres, movies, on trains, all kinds of places really. :o It's embarrassing and a little freaky too.

I fell asleep at the orientation meeting for my last job. :o Nobody noticed, but damn... I mean, it was boring as hell, but I really need to learn either self control, or to like the taste of coffee. :p

the doctor gave me this whole thing to read on sleep and this is exactly what it said NOT do to (it's what I had been doing). It said the worst thing you can do is go to bed if you're not tired and lie there sleepless. it said that if you go to bed when you're tired, you won't get as many hours, but you'll have a higher QUALITY sleep. and it also said that if you lie there without sleeping you associate bed negatively.

someone mentioned it earlier but I think one of my problems is that I'm in a deep REM sleep most of the time. I dream long, extensive, dreams every single night, especially when it gets closer to morning, so I'm like lost in my dreams instead of in reality!

you can have your downstairs neighbors getting into a blowout top-of-their-lungs argument when one part of the couple comes in at 3:30AM. That woke me up and kept me up until my alarm went off at 5. :(

So you aren't waking up in the middle of the night. I know I have a problem of waking about 3am and then having trouble sleeping. It's not all the time but i have periods when it happens. I usually get up on time though. I never used an alarm now I have one as a back up.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.

no, I had that problem for a while but now I'm sleeping soundly.
I always woke up without an alarm too. I don't know what happened.
